Biking Along The Rhine River In Europe

Alicia Heyburn lives in Maine at the junction of land and sea. She has peddled across the USA and enjoys the challenge of finding routes that safely accommodate bicyclists. She is a trained CommunitySpoke with the Bicycle Coalition of Maine, a network of volunteer bicycle and pedestrian advocates, and has worked to convert abandoned railroads to bike trails and connect areas of town by trail.

This summer, she partnered with The Nature Conservancy to promote World Fish Migration Day, by bicycling 1300 kilometers along the Rhine River from its source in the Swiss Alps through Germany, France and the Netherlands to its outlet in the North Sea. The mission was to talk to people about their relationship with to the Rhine and its tributaries, as well as meet with professionals involved with adaptive barrier management to reconnect Europe’s rivers.

This all culminated in her presentation for us: Show Me Your River: Connecting Rivers, Fish and People, by bike. A 1000 mile cycle tour of Europe's Rhine River from the source in the Swiss Alps to the outlet near Amsterdam, enjoying well designed cycle routes & the generosity of strangers while advocating for open rivers and migratory fish.
