SUMMARY:Abol Trail on Katahdin @ Baxter State Park
DESCRIPTION:This is an event hosted at the Baxter State park Labor day weekend! \n3.4 miles (plus 1 mile on Hunt trail 4.4 miles total one way to Baxter Peak) Elevation gain 3\,982ft \nI have yet to do this trail but its description is: \nThis trail is the shortest route to Baxter Peak from a roadside trailhead. The trail formerly utilized the prominent Abol Slide\, but was relocated in 2015 after soil and rock movement on the slide increased the hazard to hikers. The relocated trail uses the ridge to the west of the slide and provides a steady\, but steep ascent with excellent views. Water is limited after the first mile and the trail is fully exposed after 2.5 miles. On warm days\, an early start is recommended. Once on the Tableland you will connect with the Hunt trail (AT) for the last mile. \nDifficulty level: Very Strenuous \nTrailhead Parking lot: Abol Campground

SUMMARY:Hike the Owl at Baxter Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a whole day event so we will get an early start in order to be back for Happy Hour and Dinner.  The drive from the camping area to the trailhead is a 45-60 minute drive.  We MUST carpool due to a limited number of parking spots at Katahdin Stream. \nDistance to Summit: 3.7 miles\, 7.4 miles round trip\nTime: 4-6 hours round trip\nLevel: Serious \nThe hike is an easy climb for the first mile before the trail begins to get much steeper. The trail is very rocky in spots so hiking poles are recommended unless you’d rather use your hands bouldering\, which is perfectly doable. The views of Katahdin from the summit of The Owl are some of the best views of Baxter Peak\, and there are views of countless surrounding lakes and mountains. \nAs the closest mountain on the western side of Katahdin\, The Owl has a front-row seat to the best views and waterfalls in Maine’s Baxter State Park. \nEileen Whynot\n207-749-0211
