SUMMARY:Weather dependent hike to Mt. Kineo\, Rockwood\, ME Sunday September 7
DESCRIPTION:Plan to meet at the Rockwood ferry shuttle at 10:00 to boat over to Mt. Kineo State Park.  Cost is $15.00 CASH per person paid directly to the captain of the shuttle and $5.00 CASH for the State Park entry fee.  Park fee is variable depending on age and residency.  The Rockwood Public Landing is a 45 minute drive from Lily Bay State Park.  I will be leaving Lily Bay State Park Group Site at 9:00.  Car pooling is suggested. \nWe have several options of hikes.  I would like to do the 4-5 hour moderate hike up Indian Cliff Trail and down the North Trail.  There is also the Bridal Path Trail which is easier but does not have the same views.  For a flatter trail option there is the carriage road out to Hardscrabble Point or the trail to Pebble Beach which is on the North side of the island. \nBring good hiking shoes\, poles\, water\, lunch\, snacks\, and CASH. \nThe shuttle leaves Rockwood Public Landing to Kineo on the hour every hour from 9:00 to 4:00.  The shuttle returns from Kineo 10:45\, 11:45\, 12:45\, 1:45\, 2:45\, 3:45 and last trip is 4:45.  I am hoping we will make the 3:45 ferry after the 4 to 5 hour hike\, but if it takes longer we will catch the 4:45. \nAs stated in the event title\, this could be a weather dependent hike. \nText me at 617-694-8543 if interested. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 3 nights getaway in the middle of Maine at AMC’s Medawisla Lodge and Cabins in the Maine Woods Initiative area geared to seniors but open to all. We have timed our stay to take advantage of dark skies to enjoy a sky full of stars without having to stay up late. Whether you enjoy easier trails in the woods\, climbing mountains\, off road biking or paddling\, you can find something to do here. However\, you can also just enjoy sitting on the porch at the lodge or down at the lake. Bring your own kayak or canoe or use one available there. \nWe are holding the Meadow Bunkhouse with 16 bunk beds\, a 2 bedroom cabin with 1 queen and 2 twins\, and a 2 bedroom cabin with private facilities with 1 queen\, 1 double and 1 twin (held for the group until 8/1/2025 – after that time it will be open for general reservations). SUMMARY:Hike Libby Hill in Gray and joyful hour
DESCRIPTION:It will be cooler (supposedly) on Saturday so please join me for a hike on the Libby Hill Forest trails in Gray.  They’re near the schools across from Hannaford\, off Route 26.   I plan on a hike of about an hour and a half.  There are a variety of trails with various difficulty and we’ll see which ones the group wants to do.  Mostly conversational pace\, but we’ll keep moving.  We can split the group if some want or need a slower pace or shorter\, easier trail.  It’s been a while since I’ve been there\, but the trails were generally well marked. \nYou can see the trails here:  https://libbyhill.org/trail-maps/ \nFor those willing and able we’ll head to camp (about 10 minutes away) to eat\, drink and be merry.  The happy hour committee doesn’t like others to use the term happy hour on so as not to confuse things with the “official” club happy hour.  🙂  I will probably not do the grill\, but will bring a sandwich or something.  BYO your own food and drinks.  Folks are welcome to just come to camp later if they don’t want to do the hike.  I expect to be there by 4:30-ish. \nPlan to arrive so we can be on the trail at 2:30. \nShow and go.  No dogs please.  And no ferrets.  You can text 207.807.2729 with questions

If the government is still shutdown on November 3rd\, the event will be cancelled. \nTammy and I cannot attend on the 9th\, so there will be no official MOAC group this year. If you would like to participate as an individual\, please sign up here: \nTake Pride in Acadia Day \n \nYou will be assigned to random groups. \nI have left the original information from the event below. \n———————— \nFor 34 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

DESCRIPTION:Join me to hike the trails at the Raymond Community Forest.  The preserve is part of Loon Echo Land Trust.  We will be hiking 2 loops.  The first one will be Pismire Bluff Trail and the Highland Loop.  Distance is 2.1 miles and 580 feet of elevation gain.  We will return to the parking lot and hike the Spiller Homestead Loop and Grape Expectations.  Distance is 1.9 miles and is mostly flat.  Trail descriptions are on All Trails.   Meet at the Gray Park N Ride (Exit 63) on Route 26A for carpooling and a 9:30 departure. Trailhead meeting time is 9:50.  If meeting at the trailhead\, be aware that some GPS directions will direct you to Hemlock Road.  Stay on Conesca Road as the trailhead is just ahead.  Bring water and snacks/lunch.  Call 838-0437 with any questions.

SUMMARY:Full moon hike on Pisgah Hill
DESCRIPTION:Update:  This event is still on schedule for RRCT.  However\, something has come up for me personally so I will not be attending. \nHello\, this is an annual event hosted by Royal River Conservation Trust.  It’s a relatively short hike\, a little steep in spots – 1.2 miles round trip.  They have a fire at the summit and hot chocolate and s’mores. \nFrom their website: ” \nThe Pisgah Hill Preserve South Trailhead is at 74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester (In Pownal\, Dougherty Road is known as Chadsey Road).  Parking for this event is on the road shoulders of Dougherty Road\, on one side only.  We will place “no parking” signs on the other side of the road.” \nThe event runs from 4 to 7pm.  TRACTION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  The trail gets compacted and can be very icy.  Someone slipped on ice and (I think) broke a wrist a few years ago on the way down.  The trails are fairly well marked and most parts will have candles or lanterns\, plus there are generally a lot of people going up and down at various times.  And\, of course….dress warmly – it’s gonna be cold. \nThey appreciate people registering on their website\, but it’s not required.  It’s a free event.  See the link below.

There are nice ledge views and a side trip to beautiful Rattlesnake Pool. There is also an option to add Shell Pond trail which is an additional 3 miles at easy grade. Pace will be chill at 1-2 mph\, terrain dependent. Max of 8 people. \nWeather thus far\, is partly sunny with high of 58. Prepare for variable temperature\, bugs\, some mud. SUMMARY:Memorial Day Weekend Camping in Bar Harbor - UPDATE!!
DESCRIPTION:As of 3/25/26\, Hadley’s lists 9 tent sites available and “plenty” of RV sites (water/electric/some with sewer). If you are interested in this trip\, please don’t wait too long. You also do NOT need to stay at Hadley’s. You are welcome to outdoor adventure with us and hang out for the evening/whenever festivities. \nLet’s keep a long-standing MOAC tradition alive by welcoming summer with a group campout on Mt. Desert Island. \nWe camped at Hadley’s Point CG last year and had a great time. Hadley’s Point is just off Route 3 as you head to Bar Harbor. It is 2.5 miles before Bar Harbor Campground. Holiday weekend prices appear to be: \n\nField tent sites are $37.00 per night\nWooded tent sites are $39.00 per night\nSites with water/electric are $54.00 per night\nThey even have cabins if you want to check those out\n\nThere appears to be a $3.25 campground fee\, plus tax of course. \nhttps://www.hadleyspoint.com/ \nTammy and I will reserve site C-37 (water and electric) and it is near to a pod of tent sites (13-20\, 30-36\, 40-42). We will also reserve C-36 to use as a home base for the group. We will ask attendees to help pay for this community site. If we get 25 people\, that will mean about $5 per person for the weekend. \nIf you choose to go\, please drop us a line at pcm25me@gmail.com so we know who to expect and what site you are in. You can also stay anywhere you like and come visit as well. \nYou do have to make your own reservations. Deposit amounts vary. For 1-2 nights\, it is the full balance. For 3 or more it is $100. Unfortunately\, they state there are no refunds for a holiday weekend. \nIt might be best to grab a site as soon as you can if you are interested. \nWe will continue the traditional experience of group happy hours and pot luck dinners in the evenings. Restaurants are also on the table. Activities during the day will be up to the group. Hiking\, biking\, paddling\, etc.

SUMMARY:Pawtuckaway SP hike
DESCRIPTION:Loop exploration of North and South Mt. 6.4 miles and about 1300 feet elevation gain. This a moderate hike with a slow to moderate pace depending on attendees. Weather looks very good right now\, but per usual\, prepare for change in weather\, pack adequate food and water. \nAttached  photo will show the trail. Parking is near the trailhead on reservation Road. All Trails has good directions. Consider carpooling. I can take three people.  Initial meeting places can be Cabela’s at 830am and/or Wells park/drive both on ME turnpike. Goal is to be at trailhead by 10am with  a 10 minute leeway. \nPawtuckaway SP has diverse terrain\, including a lake\, fire tower\, marsh\, and a glacial boulder field. This specific loop follows a ring dike\, a circular formation due to past volcanic activity. The views are quite nice in many sections. \nBe aware that this park requires a parking day pass for hiking which can be obtained on website: Reserve America and the fee is $5 for each person. DESCRIPTION:I’m thinking we meet somewhere on Congress by  MECA and start playing.  I’ve participated in many jams with  MOAC members and we’ve played popular folk\, Americana\, country\, rock tunes.  But it really doesn’t matter what we play and with what.  Bring any skill level and any instrument.  Hide in the middle of the group if you are afraid (safety in numbers).  This could be great or a complete mess\, but I’m sure it will be fun!    I’ve been thinking about this and watching the weather which finally looks better so I figured I needed to post this now!   Details to follow once I hear from interested parties.  Ate Ate 9- Ate 5 1 Ate\, which is a cell phone number written in Kiddspeak.

DESCRIPTION:This is Kate reposting for Eileen’s Alpine Garden hike. This hike is weather dependent\, already postponed from May 31.   Eileen can’t go Tuesday\, so I am organizing those interested in this date\, Tuesday June 9. Yes I know it is election day; I voted already… It is the best weather this week. Temps are supposed to be mid-50s with lower winds than last 10 days or this coming Saturday and some sun. \nThis is an intermediate hike of 3.5 miles out and back across rocks above tree line.  You are required to STAY on the marked trail.  The terrain is fragile.  It will be 2+ hours of hiking or more depending on photos and enjoying the views.\n\n Weather on Washington  Here is Mountain-Weather link.\n\nSturdy boots\, wind/rain gear\, warm layers\, hat\, water\, food\, etc. are required.  Hiking poles are a good idea.\n\nLet me know if you want to carpool: I can drive or hitch a ride. I live on the East End in Portland.  Cost is $36 per person in a vehicle to drive six+ miles up the Auto Road to the trailhead.

DESCRIPTION:We’ll go up Mt Eisenhower via Edmands Path since Mt. Clinton Rd is now *really* open for the season (it wasn’t when I last posted this and we climbed Pierce instead.) Hike is 6.6 miles round trip\, 2\,750′ elevation gain – a challenging hike. Bring plenty of water\, lunch and warm layers for the top including a hat\, gloves and rain shell. The summit elevation is almost 5\,000′ so it can be cold and windy up there. Please have recent experience on similar hikes – this is not a trip for beginners. RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 6 am)\, and to arrange car pooling. We may go out for refreshments afterwards\, and this trip is subject to change based on weather. We have timed our stay to take advantage of dark skies to enjoy a sky full of stars without having to stay up late. Bring a lawn chair and sit by the lake for a full view of the sky. Whether you enjoy easier trails in the woods\, climbing mountains\, off road biking or paddling\, you can find something to do here. However\, you can just enjoy sitting on the porch at the lodge or down at the lake. Bring your own kayak\, paddle board or canoe or use one available there. There are also 2 other ponds to enjoy by canoe down the road. There is off road and trail biking available. Hiking opportunities vary from mostly flat to mountains.
