SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2025 - Rescheduled to 11/9
DESCRIPTION:Due to the government shutdown\, TPIAD has been moved to Sunday\, November 9. If the government is still shutdown on November 3rd\, the event will be cancelled. \nTammy and I cannot attend on the 9th\, so there will be no official MOAC group this year. If you would like to participate as an individual\, please sign up here: \nTake Pride in Acadia Day \n \nYou will be assigned to random groups. \nI have left the original information from the event below. \n———————— \nFor 34 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:3 Day 150 mile Vermont Rail Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:This is an unsupported Bike trip across Vermont.  The total distance is 155 miles over 3 days of biking.  The longest day is 57 miles.  We’ll be packing sleeping bags\, tents\, food and cooking equipment.  The first two days will be entirely on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail which is a beautiful\, really well built rail trail that winds its way through farms\, woods and small towns.  The last day will be on nice roads\, over North and South Hero Islands on Lake Champlain\, crossing Lake Champlain on the Island Line Trail.  We can spend the night with a friend who lives in St. Johnsbury.  I can bring everyone’s equipment in a truck and a trailer.  I’m a bike mechanic and I’ll pack spare parts and tools.  I’ll also arrange for emergency pick up if needed. \nDate is flexible pending interest and availability\, as well as the weather.  Feel free to get in touch with questions or concerns. \nDay 1.  Make our way to St. Johnsbury\, Vt. Have dinner and spend the night at a friend’s house. \nDay 2.  The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail climbs up at a 3% grade for the first 17 miles or so\, then down at a 2-3% grade for the next 20.  3% isn’t a hard grade\, but after 17 miles you’ll be delighted when it changes from up to down.  There is about 1600 feet of elevation gain in the first 17 miles.  We can stop for lunch at an iconic General Store and eat on the shores of Joe’s Pond.  Pack for Dinner which we will cook at our campground\, the Mountain View Campground\, which boasts a pool\, hot tubs and a great selection of local beer. \nDay 3.  This is a more remote stretch of Vermont\, and the trail runs mostly through woods.  We can stop for breakfast and pack for lunch at the Morrisville Food Coop\, then it’s into the woods.  The trail ends at Swanton where we can stop at Hannafords to pick up dinner and the following days Breakfast and Snacks.  There are a few miles of biking on a busy road to get to the campground\, which is Campbell’s Family Campground.  This is just a dairy farm on Lake Champlain that’s diversified into camping.  It can be loud at night\, but it’s a good spot.   \nDay 4.  Breakfast at the campground.  This day is Road Biking on North and South Hero Islands.  We’re off the rail trail and on to roads\, so there is some up and down\, but it’s a manageable 600 feet of climb over the day.  North and South Hero islands are beautiful rural islands that make for some great biking.  The last 10 miles or so is over the Island Line Trail\, which is a really exquisite causeway trail over the Lake.  There is a Ferry over a gap in the trail.  We’ll end the night at Burlington where we can enjoy some great food and Beer.  We’ll book an Air BNB for the night

SUMMARY:Winterfest Outing - Bike via back roads to Babb's Covered Bridge / walk The Mountain Division Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is an outing during “Winter”fest. Looks like we won’t be having a storm before Winterfest\, in lieu of snow shoeing and skiing\, we have a bike trip planned to Babb’s Covered Bridge (2.4 miles away from the farm) so bring a bike! If a group would rather walk a portion of The Mountain Division Trail\, the trail is still icy (proof that\, yes\, we did have winter!). Please bring spikes if you take that route.

SUMMARY:Sorry\, we are FULL – Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:For 32 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. Discontinued during Covid\, it resumed last year. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:Sorry\, we are FULL - MH&T’s Flagstaff Hut
DESCRIPTION:Maine Huts & Trails operates four “Eco-Lodges” in northern Maine\, and for the weekend of October 27-29\, their Flagstaff Hut is all ours. The hut is located on the eastern shore of Flagstaff Lake\, about a 2.5 hour drive from Portland. \nThis will be our 10th year leading this trip and each year it is an experience to remember. Good company\, good food\, and the Maine woods. How could it not be? \nFlagstaff Hut (in name only) is an off-the-grid lodge (capacity of 44-48) with amenities. Electricity is provided by solar panels and a generator. Hot water via propane\, and heat\, if needed\, via wood. The building has composting toilets\, showers\, and a full commercial kitchen with refrigeration. \nThe cost for this weekend is $100 per person. \nSleeping is bunk room style (earplugs) in two separate buildings apart from the main lodge (earplugs). \nYou need to bring a sleeping bag\, pillow cover (recommended)\, clothes\, and personal items (earplugs). You will need to provide your own food for Friday\, Saturday morning\, and Saturday lunch. You DO NOT need to bring anything to cook with or on. You will have full use of the commercial kitchen. In a process perfected by Tammy\, you will be asked bring a small amount of food to contribute to the cause for Saturday dinner. More on that later. Sunday breakfast is a full spread paid for by part of your payment for the weekend. \nCoffee/tea/hot chocolate will be provided at least in the mornings and for some reason\, Happy Hours tend to materialize in the late afternoons. No obligation to participate but donations for those are welcome as well. \nThe hut is designed to be remote. You cannot drive to it. Gear can be dropped off at the service gate to shorten the distance but all must be carried in and out. We try to have as many carts and wagons as people are willing to bring to share to help move stuff. Your vehicle will be two miles from the hut when parked in the lot. Please keep this in mind as you plan on what you are bringing. \nActivities can include hiking\, mountain biking\, paddling\, navel gazing\, reading\, puzzles\, drinking wine\, staring at the fire. Music if the right people show up. Keep moving every second\, or do nothing. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. \nChecks can be made to Peter Mullen and mailed to 38 Lawrence Rd\, Gray\, 04039. $100 per person for the weekend\, \nWe also accept Venmo. Pay to tammy-mullen-5. Please put “MOAC” in the comments. \nWe look forward to seeing old friends and new faces at Flagstaff this fall.

SUMMARY:Portland Bike Party!
DESCRIPTION:6/16/23 UPDATE: Weather forecast has gradually improved.  Temps now predicted to be in the low 60’s with a 20% chance of precipitation.  Who’s feeling lucky?  I’ll be there … putting the Adventure in Maine Outdoor Adventure Club! \nWeather report for Friday currently doesn’t look promising\, but posting this in case the outlook improves.  Assume event canceled/attend at own risk if outlook continues to look dour … \nI did this last month with another MOACer and it was an absolute hoot.  150 riders of all ages on a meandering 5 mile bike ride through the streets of Portland (pace best described as … glacial).  Ride stops midway somewhere along the route\, everyone dismounts and … has an impromptu half-hour long dance party!  Very well organized with safety volunteers stopping traffic at major intersections.  Riders festooned their mounts with all manner of horns\, bells and enough LED lights to decorate downtown for the holidays.  One guy had an adult tricycle with a pair of rock concert-sized speakers\, blaring raucous music the whole way.   No frickin’ clue what was powering those beasts\, but they gave the term “urban assault vehicle” a whole new meaning.   At the dance party\, another rider\, whose bike sported a pirate flag atop a kayak paddle\, was filling people’s waterbottles from a giant box of wine.  But only if you referred to him for the evening as … “Nutmeg”. \nNo\, of course none of this makes any sense!   Think Burning Man\, but on two wheels.  If you’re not rocking some kind of noise maker or festive bicycle lighting\, you’re missing the point.  But even if you don’t have any of that\, just bring your bike and join me for an evening of pedal-powered insanity!  Meet at North Boyd Street (Austin Street Brewery/Kennedy Park) in Portland’s Bayside neighborood at 6:45pm.  Perhaps noshing and libations afterwards\, depending on group interest. DESCRIPTION:Are you eager to put your butt onto a bike seat and ride 180 miles in 3 days for a great charity?! Well\, MOAC has a Trek Across Maine Team\, the Trek raises money for the American Lung Association\, and we all want clean air for our MOAC activities. \nCome join us! \nThe team has raised upwards of $50\,000 doing the Trek since 2016. \nFeel free to contact me with any questions\, but there are various training rides to join around the area to prepare. It’s very well supported with three rest stops per day\, and no sustained distances any day > 20 miles before option of a rest stop\, overnights are at Bates and St. Joe’s this year.  Great fun\, great people\, and an experience like no other. Current team members are a mix of MOAC members and non-members\, so if you have a non-MOAC buddy\, they can also be on the team! \nCheck out the MOAC Trek page link for more details!

SUMMARY:Lily Bay Group Camping Site
DESCRIPTION:UPDATED TO REFLECT PRICE\, LINK TO RESERVATION FORM\, AND REGULAR CAMPSITE INFO. \nMOAC has reserved what is called the most sought after group campsite in the Maine State Park System. We wanted beautiful late August but we got late May. Oh well. Early\, yes\, but we are hearty. It is a three night reservation. Friday through Monday. \nTo attend this weekend\,  please be fully vaccinated. \nThis trip is being co-led by Nancy Dorrans and Tammy/Peter Mullen. Nancy will handle the registration and payment part and Tammy/Peter the logistics. \nThe cost for the weekend is $25 regardless of how many nights you plan to stay. Max\, three nights. \nTo be placed on the waitlist\, CLICK HERE. \nPlease email us at pcm25me@gmail.com or njdorran@gmail.com with questions. \nFor those that might prefer a camper to a tent\, it would be possible to stay in the State Park campground itself and come hang out. These campsites will be first-come/first-served as reservations don’t start until the day we leave. The campground and the group site are not close together. A mile or two maybe? But it is an option. \nMud Brook Group Campsite is just north of Lily Bay State Park. Capacity is 50 with a large fire circle\, and a small cooking shelter if needed. It is surrounded on three sides by Moosehead Lake. It has a water source and a vault toilet. Showers in the State Park are  available but it is a drive to them. \nThe park is 8 miles out of Greenville on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake. \nPaddle the lake or any of the other countless bodies of water nearby? Hike? Bike? Fish? Moose watch? Explore Greenville? Sit and read? Sit and read and drink wine? \nMore details will be coming so check back.
