SUMMARY:Sailing Ships Maine: Sailing and Rowing Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Presentation:  Sailing and Rowing with Sailing Ships Maine\nJoin us for a presentation by Sailing Ships Maine\, a Casco Bay-based nonprofit that uses traditional sailing vessels to deliver transformative\, technology-free voyages.    \nAlso featured will be Row Casco\, a community rowing initiative using 32-foot Cornish gigs out of East End Beach in Portland. Row Casco opens the ocean to people of all ages through team-based rowing\, with a focus on inclusivity\, community\, and maritime heritage — a natural extension of Sailing Ships Maine’s on-the-water mission. \nCaptain Natasha Salvo will share how Sailing Ships Maine students live and work as active crew members — learning navigation\, seamanship\, and environmental awareness — while building leadership\, teamwork\, and self-reliance through direct experience at sea. \nThe presentation will also cover Sailing Ships Maine’s expanding adult and community programs\, including Women-to-Women and family overnight sailing experiences designed to build skills\, confidence\, and connection on the water.\n\n_______________ \nPresenter’s Bio: \nCaptain Natasha Salvo is the founder of the Sailing Ships Maine women-to-women sailing program and former program coordinator. Having passed the baton\, she recently purchased an Island Packet 27 sailboat from the organization and is looking forward to her own sailing adventures in Penobscot Bay this summer. A lifelong sailor\, former live aboard\, blogger\, and author of several sailing articles\, she is deeply curious and committed to learning all there is to know about sailing as a metaphor for life.\n—————– \n\n\n\n\n\nWhen:   Weds\, May 6\,  6:30pm social; Presentation Start: 7:00pm\n\nWhere:  A2U2 Church\, 524 Allen Ave.\, Portland\nWho:    Free and open to the public.\n\n—————–

SUMMARY:Join MOACer Jean Armstrong at Mayo Street Arts Gallery Opening
DESCRIPTION:Join MOACer Jean Armstrong at Mayo Street Arts Gallery Opening Friday\, 5/1/26 for 1st Friday Artwalk. Mayo St. Arts\, at 10 Mayo St.\, 2 streets parallel to Franklin Arterial toward Munjoy Hill\, is hosting the Miniature Show with over 125 miniature works of art in many media types. Most items are for sale and profits benefit Mayo Street Arts. Jean joins dozens of artists that were selected to be in this show. The miniature show is a yearly tradition\, one that is particularly needed this year where the city took away Mayo Street’s non profit status so they are now facing financial challenges with city taxes.  The show is free and will be up for a couple of months but come say hi to the artists at the opening Friday or check out the art on the walls when you attend one of the many Mayo Street Arts shows soon.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: Hope for Winter: Preserving Snow & Cold through Collective Community Action
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to welcome UNH’s Dr. Liz Burakowski for a timely look at the future of the winter season many of us love most.  No matter what your outdoor passions are\,  join us for an evening designed to inform and inspire anyone with a deep passion for the Maine outdoors and a desire to protect our winters. \n“Growing up in New Hampshire\, I have fond memories of snow days\, pond skating\, sledding\, and so many other wintry activities associated with quiet\, white landscapes. I sensed a shift in 2002\, when I was in college\, during the warmest winter on record since 1895. By 2004\, I was determined to learn more about why our winters were warming. Through the course of my scientific career\, I have met so many other folks that share my passion for preserving our cold\, snowy New England winters.” — Dr. Liz Burakowski \nBio:  Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Burakowski is an Associate Professor at UNH’s Institute for the Study of Earth\, Oceans and Space. A widely published author on the Northeast’s changing climate\, Liz is a gifted communicator who has brought her message to the TEDx stage. Her work focuses on the past\, present\, and future of our winter landscapes and the ripple effects of these changes on our ecosystems and community. \nA “powder-hound” in her own right\, Liz learned to ski at Saskadena Six in the late 1980s\, later picked up snowboarding\, and has been a backcountry split-boarder for years. In addition to her role at UNH\, Liz has serves on the Protect Our Winters (POW) Science Alliance\, advocating for the snowy seasons that define our identity.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Full moon hike on Pisgah Hill
DESCRIPTION:Update:  This event is still on schedule for RRCT.  However\, something has come up for me personally so I will not be attending. \nHello\, this is an annual event hosted by Royal River Conservation Trust.  It’s a relatively short hike\, a little steep in spots – 1.2 miles round trip.  They have a fire at the summit and hot chocolate and s’mores. \nFrom their website: ” \nThe Pisgah Hill Preserve South Trailhead is at 74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester (In Pownal\, Dougherty Road is known as Chadsey Road).  Parking for this event is on the road shoulders of Dougherty Road\, on one side only.  We will place “no parking” signs on the other side of the road.” \nThe event runs from 4 to 7pm.  TRACTION IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.  The trail gets compacted and can be very icy.  Someone slipped on ice and (I think) broke a wrist a few years ago on the way down.  The trails are fairly well marked and most parts will have candles or lanterns\, plus there are generally a lot of people going up and down at various times.  And\, of course….dress warmly – it’s gonna be cold. \nThey appreciate people registering on their website\, but it’s not required.  It’s a free event.  See the link below.

DESCRIPTION:Join other MOACers at this dress-up event of the year! Held at the AmVets Post in Yarmouth at 148 North Road\, this annual event is a celebration of our active and social community.  This year\, we will have a traditional turkey dinner (MOAC supplies three turkeys and a cake for dessert).  Members bring appetizers and the fixings for a turkey dinner\, salads and side dishes.  Last year we ran out of the main meal\, so please bring a serving for the main meal for at least 10 people. If you’d like to nominate an organization to benefit from the raffle\, please email board@moac.org\nThis year MOAC has hired a DJ for dance music and Chris Stack\, a highly accomplished pianist\, will play while we dine.  We can also expect composer Bill Shouse to play guitar and sing the MOAC theme song.

SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2025 - Rescheduled to 11/9
DESCRIPTION:Due to the government shutdown\, TPIAD has been moved to Sunday\, November 9. If the government is still shutdown on November 3rd\, the event will be cancelled. \nTammy and I cannot attend on the 9th\, so there will be no official MOAC group this year. If you would like to participate as an individual\, please sign up here: \nTake Pride in Acadia Day \n \nYou will be assigned to random groups. \nI have left the original information from the event below. \n———————— \nFor 34 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:Hike Libby Hill in Gray and joyful hour
DESCRIPTION:It will be cooler (supposedly) on Saturday so please join me for a hike on the Libby Hill Forest trails in Gray.  They’re near the schools across from Hannaford\, off Route 26.   I plan on a hike of about an hour and a half.  There are a variety of trails with various difficulty and we’ll see which ones the group wants to do.  Mostly conversational pace\, but we’ll keep moving.  We can split the group if some want or need a slower pace or shorter\, easier trail.  It’s been a while since I’ve been there\, but the trails were generally well marked. \nYou can see the trails here:  https://libbyhill.org/trail-maps/ \nFor those willing and able we’ll head to camp (about 10 minutes away) to eat\, drink and be merry.  The happy hour committee doesn’t like others to use the term happy hour on so as not to confuse things with the “official” club happy hour.  🙂  I will probably not do the grill\, but will bring a sandwich or something.  BYO your own food and drinks.  Folks are welcome to just come to camp later if they don’t want to do the hike.  I expect to be there by 4:30-ish. \nPlan to arrive so we can be on the trail at 2:30. \nShow and go.  No dogs please.  And no ferrets.  You can text 207.807.2729 with questions

SUMMARY:Paddle and lunch at camp
DESCRIPTION:Looks like Thursday will be the last really warm\, sunny day and I’d like to paddle and maybe take a swim.  Participants will be welcome to stay to eat drink and be merry and lounge around camp for a while.  Or come after the paddle for the eating and drinking and merriment – about 1:00. \nON THE WATER at 11:00\, so please get there early enough to unload your boat and set up before that.  I’ll be there by 10:30.  Paddle will be about 1-1/2 to 2 hours depending on if we stop to swim. The water was still nice for swimming yesterday and I expect it to be good tomorrow. \nI have extra boats and gear\, just let me know ahead of time.  No dogs….or ferrets. \nBYO food and drinks if you want to stay after the paddle.   Location is in Gray on the north end of Little Sebago Lake.   Please RSVP and let me know if you need the address or have questions.  207.807.2729 or lmitchell75@aol.com.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: The Story – Maine Huts & Trails
DESCRIPTION:Our Next Monthly Meeting:  Wed Sept. 3rd \nPresentation:  The Story – Maine Huts & Trails\nPresented By:  Wolfe Tone – Maine Huts & Trails Executive Director \nThe Story:  Maine Huts & Trails\nThe Maine Huts & Trails (MH&T) experience is more than a backcountry adventure—it’s a journey through nature that invites connection\, discovery\, and belonging. Along over 80 miles of free\, year-round trails\, guests hike\, ski\, or bike from hut to hut\, immersed in the beauty of Maine’s wilderness. Inside the huts\, the warmth of a woodstove\, shared meals\, and laughter among strangers-turned-friends create moments of genuine camaraderie. Not long ago\, MH&T was confronted by operational challenges made even steeper by the pandemic. From uncertainty emerged something powerful: a fully committed board\, hardworking staff\, and our dedicated community rallied together to reimagine MH&T’s future. \n6:30PM Social;   7:00PM  Program Start\nA2U2 Church\, 524 Allen Ave.\, Portland

SUMMARY:Camping at Rangeley Lake State Park-Trip is Full
DESCRIPTION:Eileen’s Text: 207-749-0211  MOAC has reserved the East End Group Camping Site at Rangeley Lake State Park (RLSP) for three nights.  There is one larger area for group meals and hanging out with a fire.  Otherwise\, there are separate sites for each member(s).  This set-up allows for both privacy and social time with the group.  The park boasts a swimming beach with a grassy area and steps leading into the water where boats can be launched\, as well as two miles of walking trails.  MAP OF THE CAMPGROUND \nThere are plenty of options for activities at RLSP or elsewhere in the area:  hiking\, walking\, swimming\, boating and mountain biking.  Leaders will need to self-identify.  4k footer peak baggers or AT section hikers have options as well as.  Here are 28 walks and hikes within 20 miles of Rangeley.\nTop hikes in Rangeley area from All Trails\nVisit Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands online for more information and a printable map.\nFEE:  $30 per person for the trip regardless of how many nights.   Since the leader pays the balance upon arrival\, you will need to pay $30 upfront to reserve your space.  Sites will be claimed on a first come\, first serve basis.  Pay by Venmo @Eileen-Whynot.  It is probably too late to mail a check to me. \nFOOD:  As was the case in 2024\, the leader will provide grill-able meats and veggie options.  Otherwise\, the dinners will be potluck\, so plan on bringing food to share\, bring your own (BYO)  beverages\, plate and utensils.  BYO lunch and breakfast food or plan to eat out in Rangeley. SUMMARY:Memorial Day Weekend Camping in Bar Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Let’s keep a long-standing MOAC tradition alive by welcoming summer with a group campout on Mt. Desert Island. It’s getting harder to do but I think this will work. \nFor those wondering\, Bonnie has family obligations and said she isn’t going to post this trip this year. \nA check of both Seawall and Blackwoods in Acadia National Park show pretty much sold out already. \nAs of 3/22/25\, Hadley’s Point Campground has 29 tent sites and 28 water/electric sites available. This is according to their website. Hadley’s Point is just off Route 3 as you head to Bar Harbor. It is 2.5 miles before Bar Harbor Campground. \n\nField tent sites are $36.08 per night\nWooded tent sites are $38.08 per night\nSites with water/electric are $53.08 per night\n\nThere appears to be a $3.25 campground fee\, plus tax of course. \nTammy and I have reserved site C-39 (water and electric) and it is near to a pod of tent sites (13-20\, 30-36\, 40-42). \nIf you choose to go\, please drop us a line at pcm25me@gmail.com so we know who to expect. \nYou do have to make your own reservations. Deposit amounts vary. For 1-2 nights\, it is the full balance. For 3 or more it is $100. Unfortunately\, they state there are no refunds for a holiday weekend. \nIt might be best to grab a site as soon as you can if you are interested. \nWe will continue the traditional experience of group happy hours and pot luck dinners on Saturday and Sunday evenings in one area to be determined to be the group hangout. Activities during the day will be up to the group. Hiking\, biking\, paddling\, etc.

SUMMARY:Portland Community Chorus Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:The 100+ member Portland Community Chorus presents “Requiem and Renewal: Finding Light in Life’s Journey”. Our featured work in this concert is “Requiem for the Living” for choir and chamber orchestra.  Contemporary composer\, Dan Forrest\, has reimagined the traditional requiem by  focusing on a plea for rest and mercy for the living. It is a stunning piece! We will also perform Baba Yetu\, the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili\, Bridge Over Troubled  Water\, a Leonard Bernstein selection from Candide\, and Life is Beautiful by choral  composer\, Randall Stroope.  These pieces together reflect life’s journey through its highs and lows but more  importantly\, the comfort of making the journey together.   Performances are Friday May 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday May 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the South Portland High School Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the PCC website or at the door.  Suggested donation $15.00. Give what you can! https://www.portlandcommunitychorus.org/events.html \nThis is a leaderless event\, as I will be on the risers singing!

SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2024 - Registration is closed
DESCRIPTION:For 33 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend.

SUMMARY:MOAC and LELT volunteer appreciation gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAC and LELT trail crew volunteers’ social gathering/picnic on Friday Sept. 20 at 4pm.  It will be at Hacker’s Hill on Quaker Ridge Road in Casco.   This is only for MOAC members who have volunteered for the MOAC trail maintenance on Pleasant Mountain in the past 7 years since we have been working with the Loon Echo Land Trust.  LELT would like to show their appreciation for all the dedicated volunteer trail work we have done on the Bald Peak Trail and the Sue’s Way Trail.  The hard-working folks of the AMC Maine trail crew will also be in attendance.   LELT will provide pizza and cold beverages.   I have gone back through all my trail maintenance sign up sheets for the past 7 years in hopes to include everyone that has volunteered with MOAC on Pleasant Mountain – see separate email.  If you’ve never been up on Hacker’s Hill\, you’re in for a treat.  The view of the Sebago lakes region and the White Mountains is one of the best in southern Maine!    This is “NOT” a show-and-go event.  Please contact me if you think you may attend.  LELT needs a reasonable head count for the food and drinks they are providing. \nThanks\, Dana-ah The Maintain-ah

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Local Cyclist Invented the “Survue” to Alert Cyclists to Vehicles Approaching from the Rear\nOne of our two guests\, Josh Fox\, an engineer and cyclist\, felt trapped with tall curbs and zooming traffic several years ago\, so decided it was too risky to trailer his daughter when riding. “I started by just taking my phone and literally duct-taping it to my bike\, recording a video\, and running it through an open-source algorithm to see what happens\,” Fox says. “The algorithms grew more and more efficient in pinpointing the location of a vehicle and predicting its future movements. The battery got better and smaller\, so the device was eventually small enough that a cyclist would be willing to stick it on their bike.” \nMOAC Group Cycles the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\nPat Coon organized a five-night camping and biking trip in Vermont in June 2024. From Pat\, “I’ve biked since I was a kid. When I was in college I learned to fix bikes and started commuting from Amherst to Northampton\, and taking longer adventures\, across Massachusetts then from Boston to Florida. Then I was a bike courier in Chicago for a winter. That was fun. I lived for years without a car in Maine and biked everywhere. As I got older I got out of it\, I think there were two summers when I didn’t have a functional bike. Then about three years ago\, I got back in. First with electric bikes\, then analog. I started doing some bike touring\, and I discovered the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\, roughly a 150-mile\, (3-4% incline) flat ride from Burlington to St. Johnsbury\, Vermont.” \nIn preparation\, Pat posted multiple bike rides around South Portland that he called\, “Bug to Barrel\,” from Bug Light to Barrelled Souls\, a brewery. Each ride included parts of the Eastern Trail\, roads around SoPo\, Cape and Scarborough. The final “shakedown” ride was 40 miles\, fully loaded with touring gear. \nBike adventures are a challenge of logistics\, of mechanics\, of endurance\, and of spirit. Come see and hear how the group had a super duper trip! \n___________________ \nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions. Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza). Here’s a Google Map link. \n

SUMMARY:Winterfest Outing - Bike via back roads to Babb's Covered Bridge / walk The Mountain Division Trail

If a group would rather walk a portion of The Mountain Division Trail\, the trail is still icy (proof that\, yes\, we did have winter!). Please bring spikes if you take that route.

SUMMARY:Pisgah Hill Preserve Full Moon Trek
DESCRIPTION:Come join us atop Pisgah Hill in New Gloucester to howl at the beautiful full Snow Moon as it rises majestically over nearby Bradbury Mountain!  The 12th installment of Royal River Conservation Trust’s extremely popular annual hike\, this year promises crisp\, clear skies for a fantastic experience.  This is an accessible\, low intensity 1.6 mile (total distance up and down) trek to the hilltop where we’ll be greeted with RRCT’s signature hospitality\, including hot cocoa\, s’mores and a roaring campfire to keep warm. \nLet’s plan on our MOAC contingent meeting at the Doughtery Road trailhead at 5:00pm (74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester).  That way\, we can catch RRCT’s introductory remarks\, and enjoy the sunset before setting out at dusk for the brief amble up to the top of Pisgah Hill.  Bring appropriate clothing (layers are best)\, hat\, gloves\, lighting (headlamp is recommended) and traction aids (if you have them\, just to be on the safe side).  RRCT also recommends water\, your cell phone and a whistle for safety.  Snow pack looks iffy at best\, but RRCT promises a magical trip up and down Pisgah with the trail lit by lanterns and snow cairns.  Open to all ages/abilities.   Leashed\, well-behaved canines and their conscientious\, waste-clearing owners are welcome.  Further details and registration form can be found at the website listed below.  Do pre-register however\, so RRCT volutneers can plan for adequate refreshments. \nI can be reached at marchills@gmail.com and/or text @ 207-332-8250  If texting\, please identify yourself!

SUMMARY:Portland Trails Holiday Dash 5K
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and burn off a few calories from the previous night’s MOAC Holiday Party!  And help out an allied trails organization with their biggest fundraising event of the year!  Whether you’re planning to run\, jog or walk\, join us and ring in the holiday season in MOAC outdoor-active style!  Less of a race (although there’s always a few confused souls who utterly miss the point and actually compete) and more of a 3.1 mile long pedestrian holiday parade.  Participants are encouraged to dress up in festive garb and just have a blast.  And why not?  Race route will be alongside Portland’s iconic Polar Express Narrow Gauge Railroad.  With a special extension to take in the scenic East End water treatment plant\, always an olfactory delight!  Your MOAC event organizer will be walking most of the course\, although pride and vanity might compel him to push his creaky knees and jog the last 200 yards – for the all important cow-bell enhanced\, race volunteer-cheered\, finish line photo-op!  Entry fee is a spendy $40\, but remember this is for a good cause.  And it includes a free gift (often a Portland Trails embroidered winter hat) and hot chocolate at the end.  I’ll be springing for the extra $15 meal ticket for the post race brunch and complimentary pint at nearby Ri Ra’s.  Come join us!
