Throughout his career\, he has spent the majority of his efforts treating orthopedic injuries incurred from sports activities\, the workplace\, and as a result of musculoskeletal and joint dysfunction. He is an active guy\, who relates well to high level athletes\, people battling postural issues\, and the weekend warrior. He is an outdoor enthusiast and conservationist. Joe resides in Falmouth\, and enjoys spending time with his wife\, Vicki\, and their two daughters\, Blair and Grace.

DESCRIPTION:For 33 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

This year’s event will include planting native shrubs and young trees to create and restore shrubland habitat for the endangered New England Cottontail in Kittery\, Maine. Activities will include digging holes\, planting shrubs\, managing habitat\, and controlling invasive species. \nFee-free National Park day passes will be available to all volunteers. \nRachel Carson staff is asking volunteers to sign up for a shift – morning (9AM-11:30AM) or afternoon (12:30PM-3PM) for our National Public Lands Day event. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for both shifts and are always welcome to stay for as little or as long as they wish during a shift. However\, volunteers should arrive at the beginning of each shift so that we can navigate to the site as a group.  Sub-sandwiches and water/drinks were provided at noon during this event last year. \n

DESCRIPTION:Local Cyclist Invented the “Survue” to Alert Cyclists to Vehicles Approaching from the Rear\nOne of our two guests\, Josh Fox\, an engineer and cyclist\, felt trapped with tall curbs and zooming traffic several years ago\, so decided it was too risky to trailer his daughter when riding. “I started by just taking my phone and literally duct-taping it to my bike\, recording a video\, and running it through an open-source algorithm to see what happens\,” Fox says. “The algorithms grew more and more efficient in pinpointing the location of a vehicle and predicting its future movements. The battery got better and smaller\, so the device was eventually small enough that a cyclist would be willing to stick it on their bike.” \nMOAC Group Cycles the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\nPat Coon organized a five-night camping and biking trip in Vermont in June 2024. From Pat\, “I’ve biked since I was a kid. When I was in college I learned to fix bikes and started commuting from Amherst to Northampton\, and taking longer adventures\, across Massachusetts then from Boston to Florida. Then I was a bike courier in Chicago for a winter. That was fun. I lived for years without a car in Maine and biked everywhere. As I got older I got out of it\, I think there were two summers when I didn’t have a functional bike. Then about three years ago\, I got back in. First with electric bikes\, then analog. I started doing some bike touring\, and I discovered the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\, roughly a 150-mile\, (3-4% incline) flat ride from Burlington to St. Johnsbury\, Vermont.” \nIn preparation\, Pat posted multiple bike rides around South Portland that he called\, “Bug to Barrel\,” from Bug Light to Barrelled Souls\, a brewery. Each ride included parts of the Eastern Trail\, roads around SoPo\, Cape and Scarborough. The final “shakedown” ride was 40 miles\, fully loaded with touring gear. \nBike adventures are a challenge of logistics\, of mechanics\, of endurance\, and of spirit. SUMMARY:Pisgah Hill Preserve Full Moon Trek
DESCRIPTION:Come join us atop Pisgah Hill in New Gloucester to howl at the beautiful full Snow Moon as it rises majestically over nearby Bradbury Mountain!  The 12th installment of Royal River Conservation Trust’s extremely popular annual hike\, this year promises crisp\, clear skies for a fantastic experience.  This is an accessible\, low intensity 1.6 mile (total distance up and down) trek to the hilltop where we’ll be greeted with RRCT’s signature hospitality\, including hot cocoa\, s’mores and a roaring campfire to keep warm. \nLet’s plan on our MOAC contingent meeting at the Doughtery Road trailhead at 5:00pm (74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester).  That way\, we can catch RRCT’s introductory remarks\, and enjoy the sunset before setting out at dusk for the brief amble up to the top of Pisgah Hill.  Bring appropriate clothing (layers are best)\, hat\, gloves\, lighting (headlamp is recommended) and traction aids (if you have them\, just to be on the safe side).  RRCT also recommends water\, your cell phone and a whistle for safety.  Snow pack looks iffy at best\, but RRCT promises a magical trip up and down Pisgah with the trail lit by lanterns and snow cairns.  Open to all ages/abilities.   Leashed\, well-behaved canines and their conscientious\, waste-clearing owners are welcome.  Further details and registration form can be found at the website listed below.  Do pre-register however\, so RRCT volutneers can plan for adequate refreshments. \nI can be reached at marchills@gmail.com and/or text @ 207-332-8250  If texting\, please identify yourself!

DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and burn off a few calories from the previous night’s MOAC Holiday Party!  And help out an allied trails organization with their biggest fundraising event of the year!  Whether you’re planning to run\, jog or walk\, join us and ring in the holiday season in MOAC outdoor-active style!  Less of a race (although there’s always a few confused souls who utterly miss the point and actually compete) and more of a 3.1 mile long pedestrian holiday parade.  Participants are encouraged to dress up in festive garb and just have a blast.  And why not?  Race route will be alongside Portland’s iconic Polar Express Narrow Gauge Railroad.  With a special extension to take in the scenic East End water treatment plant\, always an olfactory delight!  Your MOAC event organizer will be walking most of the course\, although pride and vanity might compel him to push his creaky knees and jog the last 200 yards – for the all important cow-bell enhanced\, race volunteer-cheered\, finish line photo-op!  Entry fee is a spendy $40\, but remember this is for a good cause.  And it includes a free gift (often a Portland Trails embroidered winter hat) and hot chocolate at the end.  I’ll be springing for the extra $15 meal ticket for the post race brunch and complimentary pint at nearby Ri Ra’s.  Come join us!

DESCRIPTION:For 32 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it resumed last year. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

DESCRIPTION:I am holding 3 nights at AMC Cold River Camp in Evan’s Notch for my local hiking group – Thursday Hikers. We are all active seniors. I have a few extra spots and thought I’d open it up to MOAC members as well. \nYou can check out the camp with this link – https://www.coldrivercamp.org/about \nDATES: October 6\, 7 and 8 (a 2 night minimum is required but I would love to have everyone do 3 nights) \nCOST: $100 per person per night for AMC members (I  must have your AMC member number  before final payment which will be due September 10). $120 per person per night for non-members (worth joining for the savings)  JOIN AMC \nMost of the cabins have fireplaces. They are not insulated. I would highly recommend bringing a sleeping bag or extra blankets. You must also bring sheets\, pillow cases\, towels and any other things you might need for your personal use. Most cabins are doubles\, only a couple singles with fireplace\, some family style units and one bunkhouse with single beds. Let me know if you would be willing to share if coming as a single. I will need the names of everyone coming and their AMC member number if they have one. Contact info too. \nAll meals are included starting with Friday dinner. DESCRIPTION:We had so much fun at Jean’s yesterday\, I decided to post for a day at camp at my place in Gray.  Especially since there are (at least for now) no warnings of thunderstorms!  I’ll be there by 2:00\, come any time after that and swim\, paddle\, eat\, or nap in the hammock.  Stay for a couple of hours or for the duration.   🙂   I’m not planning a particular time for a group paddle\, but people can go out whenever.  I have a few sit-on-top kayaks and paddle boards or you can bring your own boat.  Or stay on shore and relax.  Fun hour (so as not to confuse it with MOAC happy hour) around 5:00 and we’ll light the grill around 5:30 ish for BBQ. \nAs usual – BYO drinks\, snacks and protein for the grill and a dish to share for dinner if you stay.  I’ll provide charcoal and have most condiments\, as well as paper plates\, etc.  But if you bring your own reusables\, the planet will thank you. \nShow and go if you decide to come last minute\, but I do appreciate a heads up so I have an idea of how many to expect.  lmitchell75@aol.com \n255 Westwood Rd in Gray.  If you have a boat you can drive down to unload\, park in the space by the road behind the camp. \n

DESCRIPTION:Paddle\, swim\, eat\, drink and be merry…maybe nap in the hammock…  So far\, the weather looks good for the 4th and I plan on spending the day at camp on Little Sebago Lake.  I’ll be there by 2:00 and you’re welcome to come anytime after that.  Stay a couple of hours or the whole afternoon.  The grill will get lit around 5:00 pm.  BYO meat for the grill\, drinks and a dish to share.  I have several chairs\, but bringing your own might be handy\, depending on how many people show up. \nPleas RSVP if you plan on attending and I’ll send the address\, parking is somewhat limited\, so carpooling can be helpful. \nI have a few paddle boards and kayaks (mostly sit on top\, plus safety gear) and a canoe I can share or you can bring your own boat.  There isn’t a real set time for paddling\, it will depend on the group and people can go out any time.  But we’ll shoot for a 3:30ish group start on the water.  However\, you also can just hang out at camp if you don’t want to paddle. \n

DESCRIPTION:6/16/23 UPDATE: Weather forecast has gradually improved.  Temps now predicted to be in the low 60’s with a 20% chance of precipitation.  Who’s feeling lucky?  I’ll be there … putting the Adventure in Maine Outdoor Adventure Club! \nWeather report for Friday currently doesn’t look promising\, but posting this in case the outlook improves.  Assume event canceled/attend at own risk if outlook continues to look dour … \nI did this last month with another MOACer and it was an absolute hoot.  150 riders of all ages on a meandering 5 mile bike ride through the streets of Portland (pace best described as … glacial).  Ride stops midway somewhere along the route\, everyone dismounts and … has an impromptu half-hour long dance party!  Very well organized with safety volunteers stopping traffic at major intersections.  Riders festooned their mounts with all manner of horns\, bells and enough LED lights to decorate downtown for the holidays.  One guy had an adult tricycle with a pair of rock concert-sized speakers\, blaring raucous music the whole way.   No frickin’ clue what was powering those beasts\, but they gave the term “urban assault vehicle” a whole new meaning.   At the dance party\, another rider\, whose bike sported a pirate flag atop a kayak paddle\, was filling people’s waterbottles from a giant box of wine.  But only if you referred to him for the evening as … “Nutmeg”. \nNo\, of course none of this makes any sense!   Think Burning Man\, but on two wheels.  If you’re not rocking some kind of noise maker or festive bicycle lighting\, you’re missing the point.  But even if you don’t have any of that\, just bring your bike and join me for an evening of pedal-powered insanity!  Meet at North Boyd Street (Austin Street Brewery/Kennedy Park) in Portland’s Bayside neighborood at 6:45pm.  Perhaps noshing and libations afterwards\, depending on group interest. DESCRIPTION:PLEASE Let me know if your will be pitching in for Earth Day.\nEileen 207-749-0211\nThe Scarborough Land Trust needs a commitment from MOAC.\nThank you.\nBe a Do-Bee and celebrate the USA’s largest national clean up holiday for our Mother Earth.  Activity Limit: 12\nMeet to carpool at 9:30 @ On the Vine Marketplace at 591 US-One\, Scarborough.  Drive behind the building near the grass to park. We will carpool to Sewell Woods from there.\nSee the parcel here: Sewell Woods Property . Lead Steward Emily Brown from the Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) will be our leader.  Tasks will include litter pick up\, with tools provided\, spreading wood-chips on wet and soft spots on the trail\, and moving bog bridge materials to work sites.  If time allows\, some bog bridge construction is a possibility\, too. Emily is a skilled trail builder and can easily guide a couple of volunteers on this.  SLT has all necessary power tools – they ask that volunteers bring their own PPE\, like work gloves\, eye and ear protection\, and appropriate footwear.  Since MOAC folks are used to all kinds of trail conditions and environments\, we should check the weather and dress as we normally would for a coastal hike.\nBring plenty of water\, snacks or lunch.  We could hit OOB or the Scarborough area for lunch.  If anyone nearby wants to host us\, we could all contribute to a picnic.  The sky is the limit\, when it comes to the MOAC spirit!\n\n\nSLT has plenty of rakes\, shovels\, loppers\, and wheel barrows.  SLT will provide trash bags and vinyl gloves.  Sewell Woods has two parcels on either side of the street\, so litter pick up can happen on both parcels and along the road shoulder too.  Litter pick up includes any trinkets\, tchotchkes\, art projects\, etc that have been placed along the trail\, in trees\, etc.

DESCRIPTION:With Thursday’s storm and cool weather to follow\, conditions on Saturday should be terrific at the former Carter’s XC Center\, now owned by Oxbow Brewing.  If you’ve never been\, you’re in for a treat.  All trail fees have been waived\, but Oxbow will happily take your money in exchange for various libations – hard/soft\, hot/cold\, brick oven pizza and wood for the firepits in their outdoor beer garden. \nThis show and go event will be very low key\, as your trip leader is still figuring out how to remain upright on skis with two new knees.  We’ll divide into at least two groups\, those on snowshoes and those on skis.  More ambitious skiers may wish to break off and tackle some of the longer trails.  But let’s plan on meeting mid-outing at Oxbow’s fabulous back woods hut\, where we can warm ourselves by a fire and perhaps partake of a fortifying beverage.  Then we’ll leisurely make our way back to the beer garden and enjoy pizza and beverages\, either indoors or outside by a roaring fire. \nEvent start time is 12:00 noon\, when Oxbow first opens.  We won’t actually hit the trails until 12:15.  Parking lot is expected to already be full so you may end up parking out on Rte. 26.  Let’s congregate where the parking lot funnels into the beginning of the ski trail system.  If you arrive late\, snap a pic of the trail map and head for the back woods hut! \nOxbow Brewing – 420 Main St (Rte 26)\, Oxford\, ME – about one mile past Oxford Casino\, on your left if heading north.

Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nBack for 2022\, however\, is the free lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it’s back. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider. At least that’s what it used to be. Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

A deposit is required and non-refundable but can be used within one year. \nYou can bring your own kayak or SUP or use one of the lodge’s. Hiking includes Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument\, Baxter State Park (north entrance) and Mt. Chase. Paddle at Scraggly Lake or Grand Lake Matagamon (Baxter State Park). Hike to Grand Pitch on the Sebois River. Drop down to Grindstone and hike or bike the Penobscot River Trails.
