DESCRIPTION:Eileen’s Text: 207-749-0211  MOAC has reserved the East End Group Camping Site at Rangeley Lake State Park (RLSP) for three nights.  There is one larger area for group meals and hanging out with a fire.  Otherwise\, there are separate sites for each member(s).  This set-up allows for both privacy and social time with the group.  The park boasts a swimming beach with a grassy area and steps leading into the water where boats can be launched\, as well as two miles of walking trails.  MAP OF THE CAMPGROUND \nThere are plenty of options for activities at RLSP or elsewhere in the area:  hiking\, walking\, swimming\, boating and mountain biking.  Leaders will need to self-identify.  4k footer peak baggers or AT section hikers have options as well as.  Here are 28 walks and hikes within 20 miles of Rangeley.\nTop hikes in Rangeley area from All Trails\nVisit Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands online for more information and a printable map.\nFEE:  $30 per person for the trip regardless of how many nights.   Since the leader pays the balance upon arrival\, you will need to pay $30 upfront to reserve your space.  Sites will be claimed on a first come\, first serve basis.  Pay by Venmo @Eileen-Whynot.  It is probably too late to mail a check to me. \nFOOD:  As was the case in 2024\, the leader will provide grill-able meats and veggie options.  Otherwise\, the dinners will be potluck\, so plan on bringing food to share\, bring your own (BYO)  beverages\, plate and utensils.  BYO lunch and breakfast food or plan to eat out in Rangeley. DESCRIPTION:This is a repeat of a popular trip! We will arrive at the Ferry Terminal around 3:00 PM  to buy our tickets and prepare to board the 3:15 car ferry to Peaks Island. ($14 Adults/ $7 Adults age 65+ Children 5+ or Disabled).  Distance is 4 miles and will take 2-3 hours or more stopping for beautiful views.  We’ll walk at a conversational pace.   Meet at the Marginal Way Park n’ Ride at 2:45 to carpool to the Ferry.  Parking is expensive ($5+/hour) and hard to find near the terminal.  Text Eileen at 207-749-0211\, so we will look for you at Marginal Way or if you walk to the Ferry\, so we can find you at the terminal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMOAC will join Teens 2 Trails on Tuesday\, July 1\, on Peaks Island to celebrate an incredible year of connecting Maine teens to the outdoors and to each other.  Peaks Island Lions Club\, 5:00–7:30 PM\nEnjoy a Community Contradance at 6:00 PM with music by the Portland Intown Oldtime Band with Maggie Robinson calling the dance. Sandwiches from Cheese Louise and drinks will be served. This gathering is meant to be informal and hassle-free. We’ll share what we have until it runs out\, but feel free to BYO picnic and drinks. DESCRIPTION:Let’s keep a long-standing MOAC tradition alive by welcoming summer with a group campout on Mt. Desert Island. It’s getting harder to do but I think this will work. \nFor those wondering\, Bonnie has family obligations and said she isn’t going to post this trip this year. \nA check of both Seawall and Blackwoods in Acadia National Park show pretty much sold out already. \nAs of 3/22/25\, Hadley’s Point Campground has 29 tent sites and 28 water/electric sites available. This is according to their website. Hadley’s Point is just off Route 3 as you head to Bar Harbor. It is 2.5 miles before Bar Harbor Campground. \n\nField tent sites are $36.08 per night\nWooded tent sites are $38.08 per night\nSites with water/electric are $53.08 per night\n\nThere appears to be a $3.25 campground fee\, plus tax of course. \nTammy and I have reserved site C-39 (water and electric) and it is near to a pod of tent sites (13-20\, 30-36\, 40-42). \nIf you choose to go\, please drop us a line at pcm25me@gmail.com so we know who to expect. \nYou do have to make your own reservations. Deposit amounts vary. For 1-2 nights\, it is the full balance. For 3 or more it is $100. Unfortunately\, they state there are no refunds for a holiday weekend. \nIt might be best to grab a site as soon as you can if you are interested. \nWe will continue the traditional experience of group happy hours and pot luck dinners on Saturday and Sunday evenings in one area to be determined to be the group hangout. SUMMARY:Libby River Preserve Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a 1.75 mile walk at this Scarborough Land Trust site right next to Camp Ketcha. The area includes an observation deck overlooking the Libby River\, part of Scarborough Marsh\, and a wooded area with many skunk cabbage blooms (if you haven’t seen one\, they’re very unique). Bring your binoculars if you’re a birder. There are some muddy patches\, so boots are recommended and there are also multiple sections of a thin boardwalk over wet areas. If anyone is interested\, we can add some more mileage with a walk at Ferry Beach\, or along the Eastern Trail. Parking is limited at the Preserve\, so let’s meet at Black Point Community Park (160 Black Point Rd) at 1:00pm and carpool if needed. Show and go at the Community Park.

DESCRIPTION:Interested in a 5-7 day walking trip through southern France? The Stevenson Trail (or G70) is a moderate difficulty path that passes through picturesque villages\, forests\, and low mountains (the Cévennes region of the Massif Central). It is named after Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island) who traveled it with a pack donkey and wrote a book about his trip. Today\, you can follow the well-marked route\, aided by maps and guidebooks. And a series of outfitters and B&Bs associated with the trail make it possible to rent a donkey and stop each night at lodgings. Prices are reasonable\, the food is good\, and the scenery is beautiful (fluffy hiking companion is a bonus!). No French is required. If this sounds appealing (or you want to know who’s crazy enough to consider it)\, contact Maria Snyder to start planning for a possible group trip. SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2024 - Registration is closed
DESCRIPTION:For 33 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Hulls Cove Visitors Center for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

Activities will include digging holes\, planting shrubs\, managing habitat\, and controlling invasive species. \nFee-free National Park day passes will be available to all volunteers. \nRachel Carson staff is asking volunteers to sign up for a shift – morning (9AM-11:30AM) or afternoon (12:30PM-3PM) for our National Public Lands Day event. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for both shifts and are always welcome to stay for as little or as long as they wish during a shift. SUMMARY:Pisgah Hill Preserve Full Moon Trek
DESCRIPTION:Come join us atop Pisgah Hill in New Gloucester to howl at the beautiful full Snow Moon as it rises majestically over nearby Bradbury Mountain!  The 12th installment of Royal River Conservation Trust’s extremely popular annual hike\, this year promises crisp\, clear skies for a fantastic experience.  This is an accessible\, low intensity 1.6 mile (total distance up and down) trek to the hilltop where we’ll be greeted with RRCT’s signature hospitality\, including hot cocoa\, s’mores and a roaring campfire to keep warm. \nLet’s plan on our MOAC contingent meeting at the Doughtery Road trailhead at 5:00pm (74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester).  That way\, we can catch RRCT’s introductory remarks\, and enjoy the sunset before setting out at dusk for the brief amble up to the top of Pisgah Hill.  Bring appropriate clothing (layers are best)\, hat\, gloves\, lighting (headlamp is recommended) and traction aids (if you have them\, just to be on the safe side).  RRCT also recommends water\, your cell phone and a whistle for safety.  Snow pack looks iffy at best\, but RRCT promises a magical trip up and down Pisgah with the trail lit by lanterns and snow cairns.  Open to all ages/abilities.   Leashed\, well-behaved canines and their conscientious\, waste-clearing owners are welcome.  Further details and registration form can be found at the website listed below.  Do pre-register however\, so RRCT volutneers can plan for adequate refreshments. \nI can be reached at marchills@gmail.com and/or text @ 207-332-8250  If texting\, please identify yourself!

This program will be held at Libby River Preserve this Saturday at 1:00pm. We look forward to seeing you and exploring Libby River Preserve. DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and burn off a few calories from the previous night’s MOAC Holiday Party!  And help out an allied trails organization with their biggest fundraising event of the year!  Whether you’re planning to run\, jog or walk\, join us and ring in the holiday season in MOAC outdoor-active style!  Less of a race (although there’s always a few confused souls who utterly miss the point and actually compete) and more of a 3.1 mile long pedestrian holiday parade.  Participants are encouraged to dress up in festive garb and just have a blast.  And why not?  Race route will be alongside Portland’s iconic Polar Express Narrow Gauge Railroad.  With a special extension to take in the scenic East End water treatment plant\, always an olfactory delight!  Your MOAC event organizer will be walking most of the course\, although pride and vanity might compel him to push his creaky knees and jog the last 200 yards – for the all important cow-bell enhanced\, race volunteer-cheered\, finish line photo-op!  Entry fee is a spendy $40\, but remember this is for a good cause.  And it includes a free gift (often a Portland Trails embroidered winter hat) and hot chocolate at the end.  I’ll be springing for the extra $15 meal ticket for the post race brunch and complimentary pint at nearby Ri Ra’s.  Come join us!

DESCRIPTION:For 32 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it resumed last year. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

DESCRIPTION:PLEASE Let me know if your will be pitching in for Earth Day.\nEileen 207-749-0211\nThe Scarborough Land Trust needs a commitment from MOAC.\nThank you.\nBe a Do-Bee and celebrate the USA’s largest national clean up holiday for our Mother Earth.  Activity Limit: 12\nMeet to carpool at 9:30 @ On the Vine Marketplace at 591 US-One\, Scarborough.  Drive behind the building near the grass to park. We will carpool to Sewell Woods from there.\nSee the parcel here: Sewell Woods Property . Lead Steward Emily Brown from the Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) will be our leader.  Tasks will include litter pick up\, with tools provided\, spreading wood-chips on wet and soft spots on the trail\, and moving bog bridge materials to work sites.  If time allows\, some bog bridge construction is a possibility\, too. Emily is a skilled trail builder and can easily guide a couple of volunteers on this.  SLT has all necessary power tools – they ask that volunteers bring their own PPE\, like work gloves\, eye and ear protection\, and appropriate footwear.  Since MOAC folks are used to all kinds of trail conditions and environments\, we should check the weather and dress as we normally would for a coastal hike.\nBring plenty of water\, snacks or lunch.  We could hit OOB or the Scarborough area for lunch.  If anyone nearby wants to host us\, we could all contribute to a picnic.  The sky is the limit\, when it comes to the MOAC spirit!\n\n\nSLT has plenty of rakes\, shovels\, loppers\, and wheel barrows.  SLT will provide trash bags and vinyl gloves.  Sewell Woods has two parcels on either side of the street\, so litter pick up can happen on both parcels and along the road shoulder too.  Litter pick up includes any trinkets\, tchotchkes\, art projects\, etc that have been placed along the trail\, in trees\, etc.

DESCRIPTION:For 31 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nBack for 2022\, however\, is the free lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it’s back. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider. At least that’s what it used to be. Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.
