GREAT CIRCLE TRAIL Celebration at Nahmakanta Public Lands
Please join the Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL) on September 25th for the grand opening of the Great Circle Trail at Nahmakanta Public Reserved Land, located in the heart of the Katahdin and Moosehead Lake regions.
This new 28 mile day hiking/backpacking trail loop connects the Turtle Ridge, Debsconeag and Wadleigh backcountry areas with the Appalachian Trail into one large network that encircles T1R11 WELS township.
The trail can be hiked in bite-sized sections or as a multi-day adventure utilizing 8 remote campsites accessed by the trail.
This trail has been constructed from 2005 to 2021 and visits 4 waterfalls, 2 gorges, one mountain top, several scenic ledge overlooks and numerous remote ponds.
At 10 AM on September 25th we will meet at the new Katahdin View Trailhead (45.694686,-69.170821) on the Penobscot Pond Road (Nahmakanta Road on DeLorme’s guide) on the Nahmakanta Unit, rain or shine.
There will be a guided hike (easy to moderate difficulty) lead by BPL staff explaining the unique cultural and natural history of the Nahmakanta Unit.
Please RSVP by calling the Bangor Office at 207-941-4412. Directions and a map of the trail system will be provided. For those planning to access the Unit from the south (Rt. 11, Millinocket or Brownville), the directions can be shown at the Jo Mary gate to obtain free passage to attend this event.
