Experience Level

A small flotilla of dog-free canoeists and kayakers will paddle amongst the islands of a large, slow-flowing section of the Androscoggin River north of Lewiston-Auburn in the Turner-Greene area. Picnic on an island!

One of a series of Paddle-n-Picnic trips. Suitable for canoes, kayaks and dories.

Easy paddling at a relaxed pace. We will take an out-and-back route, avoiding a car shuttle. Total mileage will be about eight.

The shoreline is mostly undeveloped and the river has a dozen or so attractive islands. Likely wildlife sightings included ducks, geese, ospreys, loons, eagles, little painted turtles and large snapping turtles. One year we saw a porcupine — up in a tree.

Meet at 10 a.m. at the put-in, which is the public boat launch on Center Bridge Road in Turner. It is marked on the DeLorme Atlas on Map 11, Sector 5-C. This is about 52 miles north of Portland.

Trip is show-n-go. No reservations needed. No quota. No vetting. No mothering. No whining. No dogs.

Don’t be left high and dry! Leader has a canoe and kayak (plus accessory gear) and can accommodate two boat-less paddlers, but must make arrangements in advance.

Call 773-9609 or 776-4273. Email is After take-out, the trip will finish at a local ice cream shop.
