A rich record of historic and pre-contact archaeological sites has been established on the islands and shore. Many known sites are threatened by sea-level rise and development. This presentation will focus on techniques for reconstructing past environments, resource use and cultural lifeways. Strategies for detailing environmental change including vibracoring and drone mapping anticipate the future. The promotion of archaeology as part of Maine tourism will be discussed. Nathan D. Hamilton, PhD is Associate Professor of Archaeology in the Geography-Anthropology Program in the Muskie School of Public Service at the University of Southern Maine. He has excavated numerous sites representative of all towns surrounding Casco Bay. In the past 10 years he has taught for the Shoals Marine Laboratory and excavated the 17th century European cod fishing station on Smuttynose Island at the Isles of Shoals.
