SUMMARY:Hot Air Ballooning\, Post Mills\, VT. FULL
DESCRIPTION:Hot Air Ballooning / Camping \n  \nMay 19\, 20\,21 \n  \nPost Mills\, Vermont. \n  \nMoacers\, \n  \nOnce a year Experimental Balloon Hot Air Balloonists get together at the grass airport in Post Mills\, VT. Weather permitting\, I will fly 5 times\, once Friday evening at 6ish\, thenearly mornings (6am) and late afternoons (7pm) Saturday and Sunday. I am looking for persons to fly and to crew. You may come for the weekend or just the day.  \n  \nBallooning: flights are about an hour (weather and safety permitting). The whole event\, coffee\, set up\, fly\, fold up\, drive back to launch site takes 3 to 4 hours. Less if the chase crew finds us.  \n  \nCamping: I have one ten man tent good for about 3 people. Camping is free. Bring your own food. I have one stove\, mostly for coffee\, and one generator (battery) to keep our devices charged. There is little or no cell service\, no internet. I will bring a cooler with water\, food\, and snacks. There are portapotties\, water\, but otherwise you need to be self sustaining. Post Mill is isolated\, in the mountains\, and about 40 minutes north of Dartmouth College. Most outdoor fun mountain and water activities available during the day.  \n  \nNote\, I fly EXPERIMENTAL balloons\, that means I made the aircraft myself\, that flying with me involves risk. There are no guarantees the weather will cooperate. You will see the most exotic balloons in the US at this event. This is in my top three places to fly in the US \n  \nAfter the flight\, survivors enjoy champagne. Questions? 727-470-3613   \n

SUMMARY:Easy Canoe Camping Trip (Members Only)
DESCRIPTION:Easy trip with no rapids or portages.  We will arrive at my camp on Lake Moxie in The Forks\, Maine on Friday May 12th and spend the night. Saturday morning\, we will drive to the Bald Mountain Pond boat landing.  After loading and launching our boats\, we will leisurely explore the pond before arriving at our campsite.  The Appalachian Trail skirts the pond before climbing Moxie Bald Mountain; there is a six person lean-to on the shore.  Some may wish to tent or sleep in the lean-to…it will be up to you.  Based on campsite space\, this trip is limited to six people.  If we arrive early enough\, some may wish to hike up the mountain to enjoy the view from its open ledges. \nMeals are on-your-own.  If weather and conditions permit\, we will have a social camp fire.  Sunday is pack and paddle day. \nYou must contact me directly to sign up for this event.  If you haven’t talked to me\, you are not going.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Preserving Vacationland
DESCRIPTION:Preserving Vacationland \nThe history of the conservation of Maine’s parks and preserves \nThe top outdoor draw in Maine is Acadia National Park. The top-most point in Maine is in Baxter State Park.  \nMaine’s 281-mile stretch of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the second longest along its 2\,170 miles — and the most challenging. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway and Maine Island Trail are internationally known signature Maine experiences. \nMaine’s many outdoor experiences include kayaking through the Scarborough Marsh\, strolling through numerous nature preserves\, hiking through Wolfe Neck Woods State Park and canoeing the Saco River. \nAll of the above-mentioned activities and places have long been enjoyed by MOAC members.  \nTheir common denominator is that they take place on lands and waters that have been preserved for aesthetic and recreational values by many different programs and campaigns: federal\, state and local plus many private initiatives and collaborative efforts. \nThe story behind the conservation of these iconic natural and historic properties is the subject of Preserving Vacationland\, a fascinating PowerPoint show that details the preservation of many of Maine’s wild and scenic wonders\, beginning with the aspirations of Henry David Thoreau in 1853 and continuing to the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters and other present-day happenings. \nIt has been presented at several historical societies\, conservation organizations and the University of Southern Maine. \nAbout the presenter: Scott Andrews earned a B.A. in history from the University of Chicago\, an M.B.A. from the Chicago Booth School of Business and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. A longtime MOAC member and trip leader\, Scott has visited virtually every park and property to be depicted and described. A longtime lifestyle journalist\, Andrews has written about two thousand articles on outdoor recreation and tourism for local and national publications. His first book\, A Century on Skis\, won the Skade Award of the International Skiing History Association. Preserving Vacationland will be his second book. \n\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \n\nZoom starts at7:00. On a good day\, if all goes well. Note that the ZOOM link has changed from the one published in the newsletter. \nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86258465247?pwd=amNrVmhpcFZUYTZJWFhrcUwzNDR3Zz09 \nMeeting ID: 862 5846 5247\nPasscode: 807832

SUMMARY:Earth Day HELP for Sewell Woods Trails-Need MORE VOLUNTEERS
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE Let me know if your will be pitching in for Earth Day.\nEileen 207-749-0211\nThe Scarborough Land Trust needs a commitment from MOAC.\nThank you.\nBe a Do-Bee and celebrate the USA’s largest national clean up holiday for our Mother Earth.  Activity Limit: 12\nMeet to carpool at 9:30 @ On the Vine Marketplace at 591 US-One\, Scarborough.  Drive behind the building near the grass to park. We will carpool to Sewell Woods from there.\nSee the parcel here: Sewell Woods Property . Lead Steward Emily Brown from the Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) will be our leader.  Tasks will include litter pick up\, with tools provided\, spreading wood-chips on wet and soft spots on the trail\, and moving bog bridge materials to work sites.  If time allows\, some bog bridge construction is a possibility\, too. Emily is a skilled trail builder and can easily guide a couple of volunteers on this.  SLT has all necessary power tools – they ask that volunteers bring their own PPE\, like work gloves\, eye and ear protection\, and appropriate footwear.  Since MOAC folks are used to all kinds of trail conditions and environments\, we should check the weather and dress as we normally would for a coastal hike.\nBring plenty of water\, snacks or lunch.  We could hit OOB or the Scarborough area for lunch.  If anyone nearby wants to host us\, we could all contribute to a picnic.  The sky is the limit\, when it comes to the MOAC spirit!\n\n\nSLT has plenty of rakes\, shovels\, loppers\, and wheel barrows.  SLT will provide trash bags and vinyl gloves.  Sewell Woods has two parcels on either side of the street\, so litter pick up can happen on both parcels and along the road shoulder too.  Litter pick up includes any trinkets\, tchotchkes\, art projects\, etc that have been placed along the trail\, in trees\, etc.

SUMMARY:HIKE MORSE MOUNTAIN PRESERVE (MODIFIED) - PHIPPSBURG
DESCRIPTION:Being the first day of Spring with the temp predicted to be pushing fifty degrees\, we will be hiking a modified version of the previous Morse Mountain outing. On the way out\, we will take the relatively short spur to the overlook in order to take in the beautiful panorama that this spot affords prior to continuing on to the beach to relax and have our lunch prior to heading back. As the spur appears have a steep section\, we will pace ourselves accordingly on that stretch. Time and interest permitting\, we will perhaps walk a short section of the West end of the beach this time around (as we walked the East end previously). Take Maine Route 209 through Phippsburg to the point at which the road continues straight on to Maine Route 216. Proceed on Maine Route 216 for 0.8 +/- miles and turn left on to Morse Mountain Road.  Proceed about 500 feet to the parking lot on the left. We will step off at 11 AM.  Suggest having cleats with you just in case. If there are any questions prior to the day of the hike\, mcb-12nam@outlook.com or 207-844-8142 (this is a land line) and 802-770-9106 the day of the hike. As noted previously\, cell service can be spotty in this area. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:March 1\, 2023 General Meeting\nFinding Hope in the Face of Climate Change\n \nWe are seeing the effects of climate change all around us—especially when we are enjoying the outdoors. She holds a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic\, and an MBA from the University of New Hampshire. She has taught advocacy skills at Colby\, Bates and Colorado Colleges. Her recent book is Advocating for the Environment\, How to Gather Your Power and Take Action. \nZoom starts at 6:45. SUMMARY:***Time change*** Cross Country Ski at Carter’s in Bethel
DESCRIPTION:***Meeting time updated to 11 AM because of the low temps this morning.***Let’s get out in the fluffy new snow! This is a “show and go” event. Please meet at the fire pit at 11 AM with your skis on\, your ticket and whatever supplies you like for a couple hours’ xc skiing. If you need to rent gear\, arrive 30-45 minutes early to get geared up. I plan to ski the mountain side trails across the road from the main lodge\, which are more advanced. There are stunningly beautiful beginner trails starting right from the lodge and going through the fields and along the river\, if you prefer. We’ll ski for a couple hours\, warm up and have something to eat\, then go out for more. Gotta make up for lost ski time this season! 🙂 There’s a food truck on site or you can bring your own food. We can decide if we want to stop afterwards for refreshments as a group. RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email if you have any questions or want to carpool\, or just want to let me know you’re coming. If anything comes up that prevents me from going\, I will post the update here\, and let folks know who RSVP’d. Just check the MOAC page before you head out Sunday morning if you haven’t been in touch with me.

DESCRIPTION:With Thursday’s storm and cool weather to follow\, conditions on Saturday should be terrific at the former Carter’s XC Center\, now owned by Oxbow Brewing.  If you’ve never been\, you’re in for a treat.  All trail fees have been waived\, but Oxbow will happily take your money in exchange for various libations – hard/soft\, hot/cold\, brick oven pizza and wood for the firepits in their outdoor beer garden. \nThis show and go event will be very low key\, as your trip leader is still figuring out how to remain upright on skis with two new knees.  We’ll divide into at least two groups\, those on snowshoes and those on skis.  More ambitious skiers may wish to break off and tackle some of the longer trails.  But let’s plan on meeting mid-outing at Oxbow’s fabulous back woods hut\, where we can warm ourselves by a fire and perhaps partake of a fortifying beverage.  Then we’ll leisurely make our way back to the beer garden and enjoy pizza and beverages\, either indoors or outside by a roaring fire. \nEvent start time is 12:00 noon\, when Oxbow first opens.  We won’t actually hit the trails until 12:15.  Parking lot is expected to already be full so you may end up parking out on Rte. 26.  Let’s congregate where the parking lot funnels into the beginning of the ski trail system.  If you arrive late\, snap a pic of the trail map and head for the back woods hut! \nOxbow Brewing – 420 Main St (Rte 26)\, Oxford\, ME – about one mile past Oxford Casino\, on your left if heading north.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to climb Mt Isolation because there are two bushwhacks that cut a couple of miles off this very long hike. It’s one of the most remote 4000ers (true to its name) and has absolutely stunning views from the summit. We’ll go up the Rocky Branch trail and bushwhacks\, for a total of about 12 miles and 3\,150′ elevation gain – a challenging trip for experienced winter hikers only. Microspikes and snowshoes are both required\, and you should also bring lunch\, snacks and at least 2 liters of water for a long day on the trail. It will probably take 7 – 8 hours total. Wind chills will be near zero at the top\, so also bring extra warm layers and a second set of gloves. RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM)\, and for carpool information. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please send me a pic of your vax card and let me know your winter hiking experience when you RSVP. Max group size is 8\, and we will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Intro to winter in the White Mountains.
DESCRIPTION:Since this outing was broadly successful last year\, we’re trying our hand at a sequel. \nShort version: \nIntroduction to White Mountain winter hiking. Sunday\, February 19th\, Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, Mt. Washington. Bring microspikes\, water\, snacks\, and layers. We will hike to Gem Pool\, which is an easy walk in the woods. I am not expecting to go past Gem Pool. All experience levels welcome. \nGroup limit is 10. To sign up\, and for meeting time and place\, email me: jamie.jbemit08 at gmail. Do not use the sign up button on the MOAC website. \nLong version: \nWHAT: back when I was young\, around the time of the Battle of Jutland\, we had this thing called winter. Temperatures would drop below the freezing point of water for days at a time. This white stuff called snow would fall\, as opposed to rain. Well\, those were the good old days. Now it’s 50 degrees in January. But we can still pretend. \nWinter in the White Mountains is (or was\, before New England winters started looking like Florida) a stunning experience; this hike will be geared toward folks who would like a gentle introduction to winter hiking in the Whites. We will be walking on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, which departs a bit below the Cog Railway. I will check road and trail conditions closer to the actual event\, but last year Base Station Road was open and well-plowed. The trail was lightly packed snow with minimal ice. The 2-mile walk to Gem Pool is gently uphill along the Ammonoosuc River. \nJust past the pool the trail goes from an easy upward slope to essentially a one-mile snow-covered staircase. Since my knees were already creaky during the Hoover Administration\, I am not planning to tackle the higher parts of the trail. THERE WILL BE NO PRESSURE TO GO PAST GEM POOL. If more experienced and ambitious members wish to continue on up the steeper sections\, bon voyage; I recommend good microspikes\, ample food and water\, and good layering of clothes. \nME: I have organized a couple of MOAC trips before. I first hiked in the White Mountains when I was 3 years old. I have organized multiple trips there with friends\, including with people who were completely new to hiking. I will move at a leisurely pace. If you want to go faster than me\, cool beans. If you want to go slower than me\, tough noogies\, you won’t go slower than me\, because I don’t leave people behind. \nYOU: this is intentionally geared toward anyone who is curious about winter in the Whites and would like an easy introduction with friends. Conversely\, if this is your 15th season summiting Washington and snowboarding back down\, it would be great to have you\, but you may find both the pace and the terrain somewhat dull.
