SUMMARY:Portland Bike Party!
DESCRIPTION:6/16/23 UPDATE: Weather forecast has gradually improved.  Temps now predicted to be in the low 60’s with a 20% chance of precipitation.  Who’s feeling lucky?  I’ll be there … putting the Adventure in Maine Outdoor Adventure Club! \nWeather report for Friday currently doesn’t look promising\, but posting this in case the outlook improves.  Assume event canceled/attend at own risk if outlook continues to look dour … \nI did this last month with another MOACer and it was an absolute hoot.  150 riders of all ages on a meandering 5 mile bike ride through the streets of Portland (pace best described as … glacial).  Ride stops midway somewhere along the route\, everyone dismounts and … has an impromptu half-hour long dance party!  Very well organized with safety volunteers stopping traffic at major intersections.  Riders festooned their mounts with all manner of horns\, bells and enough LED lights to decorate downtown for the holidays.  One guy had an adult tricycle with a pair of rock concert-sized speakers\, blaring raucous music the whole way.   No frickin’ clue what was powering those beasts\, but they gave the term “urban assault vehicle” a whole new meaning.   At the dance party\, another rider\, whose bike sported a pirate flag atop a kayak paddle\, was filling people’s waterbottles from a giant box of wine.  But only if you referred to him for the evening as … “Nutmeg”. \nNo\, of course none of this makes any sense!   Think Burning Man\, but on two wheels.  If you’re not rocking some kind of noise maker or festive bicycle lighting\, you’re missing the point.  But even if you don’t have any of that\, just bring your bike and join me for an evening of pedal-powered insanity!  Meet at North Boyd Street (Austin Street Brewery/Kennedy Park) in Portland’s Bayside neighborood at 6:45pm.  Perhaps noshing and libations afterwards\, depending on group interest. SUMMARY:Volunteer Team at the Trek Across Maine
DESCRIPTION:Cheer for MOAC members riding the Trek.  Some of these cyclists have been at it for literally decades!!  The Trek is a really fun event departing from Thomas Point Beach on Friday\, June 16th.  The Trek raises funds for the research of chronic and terminal lung disease\, quit smoking guidance and support and other medical and educational efforts in Maine related to clean air and health.  Friday’s route is from Brunswick to Bates College. \nOur assignment will be based on how many volunteers step forward.  I’ll be donating my time in any event.  The water and snack spots are a blast as we work with corporate sponsors who supply the goodies.  There might be hot chocolate\, depending on the weather; or ice water or both!  Apples to cut\, granola bars\, whatever…these riders are burning calories big time!  This is a rain or shine event.  That’s what rain gear is for!\nLet’s step up and support a good cause and the volunteer riders with our time and spirit. \nMaine’s biggest and best cycling event is back! See old friends\, make new ones\, and enjoy the 39th annual Trek Across Maine. \nCome explore new neighborhoods and landmarks\, such as Thomas Point Beach & Campground\, and St. Joseph’s College. From the baked potato bar at Bates College\, to Team Tent City with plenty of lawn games\, music\, beer and snacks\, and everything in between\, the ALA welcomes you to volunteer in 2023!

SUMMARY:Mary
DESCRIPTION:Are you eager to put your butt onto a bike seat and ride 180 miles in 3 days for a great charity?! Well\, MOAC has a Trek Across Maine Team\, the Trek raises money for the American Lung Association\, and we all want clean air for our MOAC activities. \nCome join us! \nThe team has raised upwards of $50\,000 doing the Trek since 2016. \nFeel free to contact me with any questions\, but there are various training rides to join around the area to prepare. It’s very well supported with three rest stops per day\, and no sustained distances any day > 20 miles before option of a rest stop\, overnights are at Bates and St. Joe’s this year.  Great fun\, great people\, and an experience like no other. Current team members are a mix of MOAC members and non-members\, so if you have a non-MOAC buddy\, they can also be on the team! \nCheck out the MOAC Trek page link for more details!

SUMMARY:27th Annual Paddle For Pine Tree Camp
DESCRIPTION:The 27th annual Bath Savings Paddle for Pine Tree Camp returns this June with two locations. \nPaddlers will have the chance to reunite in Solon for the traditional route down the Kennebec River or experience the new loop on the Androscoggin River in Brunswick. \nBoth paddles are family-friendly and perfect for all ages\, skill levels\, and abilities. Paddlers can also opt to participate virtually. \nProviding two locations and two dates and making it a weekend-long event serves one purpose: to raise funds for Maine kids and adults with disabilities to experience freedom and independence at Pine Tree Camp. We are Maine’s only American Camping Association-Accredited camp for people with disabilities and 100% of proceeds from this event directly benefit Pine Tree Camp’s Open Door Policy. \nExciting news: Pine Tree Camp’s overnight summer camp sessions are returning to 100% capacity in 2023\, bringing Maine kids and adults with disabilities back together for a much-needed week of friendship and fun on the shores of North Pond. The return to 100% capacity makes our Paddle fundraising efforts even more important. \nComing together to enjoy the Maine outdoors embodies the spirit of Pine Tree Camp. Throughout the pandemic\, our camp team created new programming in the form of Adventure Day Pass days and Family Recreation Weekends\, safely ensuring Maine people with disabilities full access to the outdoors in all four seasons. This programming proved to be life-changing for many of our camp families and continues to be offered. \nDid you know? Since 1945\, Pine Tree Camp has welcomed all who could benefit\, regardless of their ability to pay. The funds raised from the Bath Savings Paddle for Pine Tree Camp are a critical part of our open-door tuition policy all year-round. \n  \nPaddle on the Kennebec River on June 3rd \nOur traditional Paddle for Pine Tree Camp experience. Join us and bring your fundraising team as we paddle the Kennebec River for Pine Tree Camp on Saturday\, June 3rd. The adventure starts at the Evergreens Campground at 9:30 a.m. and ends in North Anson. \nPaddle on the Androscoggin River on June 4th \nOur new location with the traditional Pine Tree Camp experience. Join us at 9:30 a.m. and bring your fundraising team as we paddle the Androscoggin River for Pine Tree Camp on Sunday\, June 4th. The adventure starts and ends at the Water Street Boat Launch in Brunswick.

SUMMARY:Mt Webster via Webster Cliff Trail
DESCRIPTION:Climb the scenic and challenging Webster Cliff Trail to the summit of Mt. Webster\, about 5.7 miles and 2\,850′ of elevation gain. This will be a one-way hike and we’ll spot a car at the north end in Crawford Notch. There is some rock scrambling on exposed ledges on this hike\, and it runs along the edge of a cliff so probably not good for someone with a fear of heights.. Be prepared for black flies and cool conditions – bring an extra layer for the top section\, and be ready for some snow still. Also bring at least 2 liters water and lunch. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please let me know your experience on 4\,000 footers when you RSVP. Max group size is 8 – please email or text for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Maine Sea Kayak Club “kickoff the season” dry land event
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Herlihy wanted to share about a Southern Maine Sea Kayak Network event on Saturday\, June 3 at Payson Park in Portland. Exact location within the park will be determined that morning based on availability but we are treating it as a “kickoff the season” dry land event for folks to gather and share knowledge about boats\, gear\, sea kayak camping\, etc. \nJoseph Herlihy (joe.herlihy@gmail.com) is the host of the event and it will be from 9-12 and intended to be a casual “drop by” event. Bring your coffee and go connect with some experienced ocean paddlers about the sport. This may be a nice\, casual event for those MOAC members interested in learning more about ocean kayaking along the Maine coast. Steady rain will cancel. \nMore specific details at this link: \nhttps://www.meetup.com/southern-maine-sea-kayaking-network/events/291984264/

SUMMARY:Acadia Camping\, Biking\, and Hiking
DESCRIPTION:Per our MOAC tradition\, we will be camping at The Bar Harbor Campground.   See link:  https://www.thebarharborcampground.com/.  Please review so that you are aware of the campground rules\, etc.  I am estimating costs for tenting is between $35.00 and $40.00 per night.   They do not take credit cards but will accept checks and there is also an onsite ATM.  Also\, reservations cannot be made but we have never had issues securing sites.  We generally camp along Loop “B”. \nThe plan will be to bike the carriage paths or hike.   Volunteers will be needed to lead biking and hiking trips. \nIf there is enough interest\, we may do a potluck dinner on Saturday.  Otherwise\, everyone is on their own for food. \nHopefully the weather will cooperate.  If not\, we can bail at the last minute with no money committed.

SUMMARY:Hot Air Ballooning\, Post Mills\, VT. FULL
DESCRIPTION:Hot Air Ballooning / Camping \n  \nMay 19\, 20\,21 \n  \nPost Mills\, Vermont. \n  \nMoacers\, \n  \nOnce a year Experimental Balloon Hot Air Balloonists get together at the grass airport in Post Mills\, VT. Weather permitting\, I will fly 5 times\, once Friday evening at 6ish\, thenearly mornings (6am) and late afternoons (7pm) Saturday and Sunday. I am looking for persons to fly and to crew. You may come for the weekend or just the day.  \n  \nBallooning: flights are about an hour (weather and safety permitting). The whole event\, coffee\, set up\, fly\, fold up\, drive back to launch site takes 3 to 4 hours. Less if the chase crew finds us.  \n  \nCamping: I have one ten man tent good for about 3 people. Camping is free. Bring your own food. I have one stove\, mostly for coffee\, and one generator (battery) to keep our devices charged. There is little or no cell service\, no internet. I will bring a cooler with water\, food\, and snacks. There are portapotties\, water\, but otherwise you need to be self sustaining. Post Mill is isolated\, in the mountains\, and about 40 minutes north of Dartmouth College. Most outdoor fun mountain and water activities available during the day.  \n  \nNote\, I fly EXPERIMENTAL balloons\, that means I made the aircraft myself\, that flying with me involves risk. There are no guarantees the weather will cooperate. You will see the most exotic balloons in the US at this event. This is in my top three places to fly in the US \n  \nAfter the flight\, survivors enjoy champagne. Questions? 727-470-3613   \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Preserving Vacationland
DESCRIPTION:Preserving Vacationland \nThe history of the conservation of Maine’s parks and preserves \nThe top outdoor draw in Maine is Acadia National Park. The top-most point in Maine is in Baxter State Park.  \nMaine’s 281-mile stretch of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the second longest along its 2\,170 miles — and the most challenging. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway and Maine Island Trail are internationally known signature Maine experiences. \nMaine’s many outdoor experiences include kayaking through the Scarborough Marsh\, strolling through numerous nature preserves\, hiking through Wolfe Neck Woods State Park and canoeing the Saco River. \nAll of the above-mentioned activities and places have long been enjoyed by MOAC members.  \nTheir common denominator is that they take place on lands and waters that have been preserved for aesthetic and recreational values by many different programs and campaigns: federal\, state and local plus many private initiatives and collaborative efforts. \nThe story behind the conservation of these iconic natural and historic properties is the subject of Preserving Vacationland\, a fascinating PowerPoint show that details the preservation of many of Maine’s wild and scenic wonders\, beginning with the aspirations of Henry David Thoreau in 1853 and continuing to the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters and other present-day happenings. \nIt has been presented at several historical societies\, conservation organizations and the University of Southern Maine. \nAbout the presenter: Scott Andrews earned a B.A. in history from the University of Chicago\, an M.B.A. from the Chicago Booth School of Business and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. A longtime MOAC member and trip leader\, Scott has visited virtually every park and property to be depicted and described. SUMMARY:Earth Day HELP for Sewell Woods Trails-Need MORE VOLUNTEERS
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE Let me know if your will be pitching in for Earth Day.\nEileen 207-749-0211\nThe Scarborough Land Trust needs a commitment from MOAC.\nThank you.\nBe a Do-Bee and celebrate the USA’s largest national clean up holiday for our Mother Earth.  Activity Limit: 12\nMeet to carpool at 9:30 @ On the Vine Marketplace at 591 US-One\, Scarborough.  Drive behind the building near the grass to park. We will carpool to Sewell Woods from there.\nSee the parcel here: Sewell Woods Property . Lead Steward Emily Brown from the Scarborough Land Trust (SLT) will be our leader.  Tasks will include litter pick up\, with tools provided\, spreading wood-chips on wet and soft spots on the trail\, and moving bog bridge materials to work sites.  If time allows\, some bog bridge construction is a possibility\, too. Emily is a skilled trail builder and can easily guide a couple of volunteers on this.  SLT has all necessary power tools – they ask that volunteers bring their own PPE\, like work gloves\, eye and ear protection\, and appropriate footwear.  Since MOAC folks are used to all kinds of trail conditions and environments\, we should check the weather and dress as we normally would for a coastal hike.\nBring plenty of water\, snacks or lunch.  We could hit OOB or the Scarborough area for lunch.  If anyone nearby wants to host us\, we could all contribute to a picnic.  The sky is the limit\, when it comes to the MOAC spirit!\n\n\nSLT has plenty of rakes\, shovels\, loppers\, and wheel barrows.  SLT will provide trash bags and vinyl gloves.  Sewell Woods has two parcels on either side of the street\, so litter pick up can happen on both parcels and along the road shoulder too.  Litter pick up includes any trinkets\, tchotchkes\, art projects\, etc that have been placed along the trail\, in trees\, etc.
