DESCRIPTION:We would like to invite fellow active MOAC seniors to join us for our Thursday Hikers Fall Getaway to Greenville. \nUpdate – It looks like the place is sold out at this time for rooms. There is camping available at the same location in a grassy area behind the resort. This can depend on weather. I can also keep a wait-list in case someone cancels from our group. Room rate of $120/night\, Sept. 24-27. The rooms have full kitchens and 2 double beds. Be sure to tell them you are with Thursday Hikers/Michell Moody group.  Be sure to check out their website for more info about the property. They also offer camping behind the resort. Some biking as well. The colors should be starting while temperatures usually aren’t too cold yet.

SUMMARY:MOAC and LELT volunteer appreciation gathering
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAC and LELT trail crew volunteers’ social gathering/picnic on Friday Sept. 20 at 4pm.  It will be at Hacker’s Hill on Quaker Ridge Road in Casco.   This is only for MOAC members who have volunteered for the MOAC trail maintenance on Pleasant Mountain in the past 7 years since we have been working with the Loon Echo Land Trust.  LELT would like to show their appreciation for all the dedicated volunteer trail work we have done on the Bald Peak Trail and the Sue’s Way Trail.  The hard-working folks of the AMC Maine trail crew will also be in attendance.   LELT will provide pizza and cold beverages.   I have gone back through all my trail maintenance sign up sheets for the past 7 years in hopes to include everyone that has volunteered with MOAC on Pleasant Mountain – see separate email.  If you’ve never been up on Hacker’s Hill\, you’re in for a treat.  The view of the Sebago lakes region and the White Mountains is one of the best in southern Maine!    This is “NOT” a show-and-go event.  Please contact me if you think you may attend.  LELT needs a reasonable head count for the food and drinks they are providing. \nThanks\, Dana-ah The Maintain-ah

SUMMARY:100 Mile Cross NH Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:This is a 90 mile ride across New Hampshire\, on the Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail.  There is a lot of information on the ride at WWW.XNHAT.ORG.  We will depart Thursday September 19th in the afternoon to shuffle cars and we will camp out in on the Vermont side near Woodsville at the Twin River Campground.   We’ll start the morning of Friday the 20th at the trail head and bike 40+ miles to the Isreal River Campground.  Heated Pool.  The next day we will pass the Appalatian Trail\, where we can\, if we’re up to it\, climb a 2 mile\, 4\,000 foot section up to the peak of Mt. Madison.  This is an optional part of the trip.  The ride is only 40 miles and almost all down hill\, so if we have some extra energry\, we might want to explore a climb.  That’s it.  A pretty simple 2 day trip.  You’ll need camping gear and a bike that’s comfortable both off road and on.  30mm would be the smallest tire I’d want to ride on this.  A gravel bike\, a touring bike\, or a hybrid with larger tires or a hard tail mountian bike would all be fine.  Feel free to call with questions Pat Coon 323-1805.

DESCRIPTION:Hello all!  Apparently I have signed up to be one of 4 participants in a comedy improv contest!  (I used to run a comedy improv troupe in Camden.)  Both the venue and the format are new to me – I’m both excited and nervous!  If you’re looking for some laughs or just feel like supporting my adventure\, come on down.  Here’s a description of the event from the producer: \n“Join us for an evening filled with hilarious\, unscripted\, short-form improv skits\, witty banter\, and unpredictable comedy. Our talented performers will have you laughing your a$$ off with their quick wit and off the cuff humor. Don’t miss out on this one of a kind event that guarantees a night of fun and entertainment. This show\, and every show that we do\, is unscripted and unrehearsed. Our 4 performers will take prompts and scenes given by the host and by members of the audience\, and create uniquely hilarious situations and reactions. The performers will be scored on their performance throughout the evening\, and our winner will receive a Westbrook On Tap gift certificate and the option to be a performer on the next (or a future) Improv-A-Ganza event! SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Local Cyclist Invented the “Survue” to Alert Cyclists to Vehicles Approaching from the Rear\nOne of our two guests\, Josh Fox\, an engineer and cyclist\, felt trapped with tall curbs and zooming traffic several years ago\, so decided it was too risky to trailer his daughter when riding. “I started by just taking my phone and literally duct-taping it to my bike\, recording a video\, and running it through an open-source algorithm to see what happens\,” Fox says. “The algorithms grew more and more efficient in pinpointing the location of a vehicle and predicting its future movements. The battery got better and smaller\, so the device was eventually small enough that a cyclist would be willing to stick it on their bike.” \nMOAC Group Cycles the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\nPat Coon organized a five-night camping and biking trip in Vermont in June 2024. From Pat\, “I’ve biked since I was a kid. When I was in college I learned to fix bikes and started commuting from Amherst to Northampton\, and taking longer adventures\, across Massachusetts then from Boston to Florida. Then I was a bike courier in Chicago for a winter. That was fun. I lived for years without a car in Maine and biked everywhere. As I got older I got out of it\, I think there were two summers when I didn’t have a functional bike. Then about three years ago\, I got back in. First with electric bikes\, then analog. I started doing some bike touring\, and I discovered the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail\, roughly a 150-mile\, (3-4% incline) flat ride from Burlington to St. Johnsbury\, Vermont.” \nIn preparation\, Pat posted multiple bike rides around South Portland that he called\, “Bug to Barrel\,” from Bug Light to Barrelled Souls\, a brewery. Each ride included parts of the Eastern Trail\, roads around SoPo\, Cape and Scarborough. The final “shakedown” ride was 40 miles\, fully loaded with touring gear. \nBike adventures are a challenge of logistics\, of mechanics\, of endurance\, and of spirit. Come see and hear how the group had a super duper trip! \n___________________ \nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions. Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza). Here’s a Google Map link. \n

SUMMARY:Hike the Owl at Baxter Park
DESCRIPTION:This is a whole day event so we will get an early start in order to be back for Happy Hour and Dinner.  The drive from the camping area to the trailhead is a 45-60 minute drive.  We MUST carpool due to a limited number of parking spots at Katahdin Stream. \nDistance to Summit: 3.7 miles\, 7.4 miles round trip\nTime: 4-6 hours round trip\nLevel: Serious \nThe hike is an easy climb for the first mile before the trail begins to get much steeper. The trail is very rocky in spots so hiking poles are recommended unless you’d rather use your hands bouldering\, which is perfectly doable. The views of Katahdin from the summit of The Owl are some of the best views of Baxter Peak\, and there are views of countless surrounding lakes and mountains. \nAs the closest mountain on the western side of Katahdin\, The Owl has a front-row seat to the best views and waterfalls in Maine’s Baxter State Park. \nEileen Whynot\n207-749-0211

SUMMARY:Baxter weekend- The Brothers\, Mount Coe and Fort Mountain
DESCRIPTION:This is an  11.5-mile loop  on the Marston Trail. This strenuous but beautiful hike climbs 1 4000 footer\, and 3 of the Hundred Highest of New England and has an Elevation gain of 4\,652 feet so be prepared with lots of food\, layers  hydration\, and a headlamp ( just in case). \nI plan to be back for the potluck. \nWe will hike the Marston  Trail Loop counterclockwise over Mount Coe\, South Brother\,North Brother and Fort Mountain. \nThere is a difficult slide climb on Mount Coe which is why we need to do it clockwise as it would be difficult to descend. \nFort Mountain is a buschwack but recent trail reports state there is a herd path. We will bag Fort Mountain if it gets too late\, too long or is too hard to follow but ideally I would like to do it if conditions are good. Fort Mountain was also the scene of a plane crash. \nI spoke to the ranger and he said the trail may be fairly busy because  it is a holiday weekend and people who don’t have parking for Kahtadin often hear for the brothers if they can’t do Kahtadin. \nNo parking reservation is needed but we should meet at the bridge at the Nesowadnehunk Field Campground and carpool over to the nearby trail. \nEmail me at melanieslawlor@smccme.edu \nor call or text at 207- two hundred and no teen- 9622 \nI will be in Baxter early Friday morning so I won’t have reception after that. I will be at the Nesowadnehunk Field Campground Friday evening.

SUMMARY:Abol Trail on Katahdin @ Baxter State Park
DESCRIPTION:This is an event hosted at the Baxter State park Labor day weekend! \n3.4 miles (plus 1 mile on Hunt trail 4.4 miles total one way to Baxter Peak) Elevation gain 3\,982ft \nI have yet to do this trail but its description is: \nThis trail is the shortest route to Baxter Peak from a roadside trailhead. The trail formerly utilized the prominent Abol Slide\, but was relocated in 2015 after soil and rock movement on the slide increased the hazard to hikers. The relocated trail uses the ridge to the west of the slide and provides a steady\, but steep ascent with excellent views. Water is limited after the first mile and the trail is fully exposed after 2.5 miles. On warm days\, an early start is recommended. Once on the Tableland you will connect with the Hunt trail (AT) for the last mile. \nDifficulty level: Very Strenuous \nTrailhead Parking lot: Abol Campground

SUMMARY:Baxter Weekend- Double Top Mountain Hike
DESCRIPTION:This is a 7 mile out and back hike of Double Top that starts at the Nesowadnehunk Field Campground at the Doubletop Mountain Trail.  Meet at the trailhead at 11am. It should take around 4 to 5 hours depending how long we take. This is a strenuous hike so plan accordingly. \nDoubletop Mountain (north peak 3\,489 feet\, south peak 3\,455 ft) guards the western edge of Baxter State Park (BSP)\, its tufted\, twin summit ridge looming like the profile of a slumped\, pudgy Dark Knight. The views of this signature BSP mountain are impressive\, as its unique profile and steep drops make for a formidable photo over Nesowadnehunk Stream or from the rugged peaks to its east. \nFor those who like hiking lists. Doubletop is on the Fifty Finest of New England. \nIf you have any questions please text me at 207-two-hundred and ninteen- 9622 or email- melanieslawlor@smccme.edu. \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:August Presentation: MITA\, the Maine Island Trail Association \nPlease joins us as Membership Manager Kayla Bickerman-Martens of the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) tells us who MITA is and how it came into being. She will also share information about the trail\, how to become a member\, and make the most of your membership using the App and the Guide. \nThe Maine Island Trail Association\, founded in 1988\, is a border-to-border (New Hampshire/Canada) water trail along the coast of Maine. Currently comprised of 258 sites that are available for public day use and/or overnight use. Each season\, we engage with upwards of 1\,000 volunteers and over 6\,000 members who help us maintain these incredible island ecosystems and keep them healthy and thriving. \n———————————————— \nKalyn joined the full-time MITA staff in February of 2023\, having previously served as a membership associate from 2021-2022. She was born and raised in Maine and has always had a connection to the islands\, particularly through her background in canoe and kayak instruction. She received her BA in Biology from Bowdoin and her MA in Conservation Biology from Columbia University\, and (fun fact) is also an entomologist. \n \n———————— \n\nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.

Be at the beach at 10AM sharp to begin the SUP portion of this event. Later\, until noon\, we will practice team and self-rescue from kayaks\, both rec and sea kayaks. If you kayak and you have never practiced a wet exit\, or re-entry\, you need to attend!! Be at the little beach at 10 AM\, not in the water. \nScott plus two of his guides will stay for the BBQ and chat up all things boats\, safety\, and fun trips. After all\, Scott started leading paddling trips at age 16! Don’t miss this great opportunity! \nPRESENTATION STARTS at 10 AM. \nRange Pond State Park

DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet in Falmouth and sail on Beyond II in Casco Bay. Bring a light rain jacket\, a swim suit and towel\, and healthy snacks and beverages to share. Closed toe shoes are safer on a boat and flip flops are a bad idea. If there’s wind\, we’ll sail around\,  and if there isn’t any wind\, we’ll drop a hook and find a beach. SUMMARY:Mt Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day going book speed or faster. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 70 at the summit and warmer below\, but not as hot as recent days. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only (covid is still around)\, max group size is 8. Text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 am)\, and to carpool. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me to discuss your experience and gear rather than text or email. PLEASE NOTE: I’ll be camping in the White Mountains this weekend so you must sign up for this hike by 12 noon on Friday\, July 19 because after that I won’t have cell service and will not receive your messages. If you sign up\, we will wait no longer than 15 minutes for you after the designated meeting time and then will head out\, since I won’t know if you’ve canceled or been delayed.

SUMMARY:Rangeley State Park Long Weekend Camping
DESCRIPTION:Fellow MOAC’ers!! \nWelcome to summer!!  It’s time to start looking ahead and making plans for some brilliant outdoor adventures.  David and I are newer MOAC members and have decided to host our first weekend camping in Rangeley State Park.  Thanks to Tessa and other MOAC members (who we thank dearly) who worked the phone lines\, we were able to secure a group site\, along the water\, next to the beach\, the east side!!\n\nThe weekend begins the evening of Friday July 19th and carries onto the evenings of the 20th\, 21st and 22nd.  David and I will be there from the 19th through the 21st.  Attendees are free to stay through the 23rd.  We are opening up the weekend to 25 avid campers and outdoor adventurers.  The cost is $35 per person for all four nights.  Yes folks\, as seen on tv\, four nights for $35!!  Apologies in advance\, there are no refunds.\n\nWe stayed at this site last year –  25 campers with a blend of single and double site occupancy should ensure plenty of space.  We are not allowed to camp on the beach.  The sites are 150+ paces in from the parking.  Privy’s are on site and appropriately set a short distance from where we camp.  We noted with keen interest many had little four wheeled buggies to make carrying things in and out easier.  If we are majority singles\, please consider sharing a tent site as the sites are limited in number and some sites are larger than others.\n\nAlright… so you’ve decided to join… Here are the goods…  Fun is the order of the day.  We’ll need trip oriented leaders for hikes\, bikes\, walks and the like.  On Saturday I will lead a hike to Saddle Back from the trailhead on Route 4.  This is roughly 11.5 strenuous miles of pure joy.  Should we desire\, we can spot cars and hike down the mountain to Saddleback ski area which will shorten the mileage some but necessitates reconnecting to our vehicle(s) at day’s end.  Interested parties for this strenuous foot pounding endeavor should email me under separate cover to express interest and commit to car spotting.  To successfully complete this hike and be back at camp in time for the potluck we need to be at the trailhead 8am sharp so the day will start early.  You can learn a little more about the intended hike here:  https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/appalachian-trail-saddleback-mountain.  Rain will shift the hike to Sunday.  Biking\, Hiking\, Swimming\, Paddling are all treasured activities in the greater Rangeley arena.  Feel free to express your chosen endeavor and recruit participants.  There is a quaint town center for shopping if one desires.  Also – relaxing on the beach is just as much as an adventure.\n\nHosting will be new for us and your good humor\, flexibility and a willingness to pitch in makes the weekend a success.  David and I will host a pot-luck dinner on Saturday and will provide the proteins – chicken-sausage-burgers – or some variation thereof – along with fresh greens and vegetables for salads.  We’ll need folks to supplement with pasta mixes and desert.  To avoid food waste – contribute for fewer than will be present – this leans into the hope that all will be eaten.  I will maintain a food sign up list and share accordingly to avoid duplication of items.  I will email all attendees prior to our trip with final bits of information.  It is BYO-Beverages and all things in moderation keeps us sane\, happy and safe.  While Rangeley is very safe and reports little to no issues with wildlife it is critter country.  Secure all food coolers and food containers properly.  We will leave no open trash after the daily meals.  All trash can be disposed of in a bear safe dumpster by taking a short drive to the start of the campsites.  Group campfires Friday\, Saturday and Sunday.  Other than Saturday’s potluck – all meals and beverages are individual responsibility.\n\nChecks can be made payable and mailed to:  Robert Laverdure\, 93 Dead River Road\, Bowdoin\, ME  04287.  Deadline for trip commitment is July 12th.  We’ve heard of this thing called Venmo but sadly\, we only accept checks.\n\nCheers\,\nDave and Rob
