SUMMARY:Lily Bay Group Camping Site
DESCRIPTION:UPDATED TO REFLECT PRICE\, LINK TO RESERVATION FORM\, AND REGULAR CAMPSITE INFO. \nMOAC has reserved what is called the most sought after group campsite in the Maine State Park System. We wanted beautiful late August but we got late May. Oh well. Early\, yes\, but we are hearty. It is a three night reservation. Friday through Monday. \nTo attend this weekend\,  please be fully vaccinated. \nThis trip is being co-led by Nancy Dorrans and Tammy/Peter Mullen. Nancy will handle the registration and payment part and Tammy/Peter the logistics. \nThe cost for the weekend is $25 regardless of how many nights you plan to stay. Max\, three nights. \nTo be placed on the waitlist\, CLICK HERE. \nPlease email us at pcm25me@gmail.com or njdorran@gmail.com with questions. \nFor those that might prefer a camper to a tent\, it would be possible to stay in the State Park campground itself and come hang out. These campsites will be first-come/first-served as reservations don’t start until the day we leave. The campground and the group site are not close together. A mile or two maybe? But it is an option. \nMud Brook Group Campsite is just north of Lily Bay State Park. Capacity is 50 with a large fire circle\, and a small cooking shelter if needed. It is surrounded on three sides by Moosehead Lake. It has a water source and a vault toilet. Showers in the State Park are  available but it is a drive to them. \nThe park is 8 miles out of Greenville on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake. \nPaddle the lake or any of the other countless bodies of water nearby? Hike? Bike? Fish? Moose watch? Explore Greenville? Sit and read? Sit and read and drink wine? \nMore details will be coming so check back.

SUMMARY:Camping at Acadia National Park
DESCRIPTION:After a 2-year absence\, I am resurrecting the annual MOAC Memorial Weekend camping trip at Acadia National Park.  We will be camping at Bar Harbor Campground.   See link:  https://www.thebarharborcampground.com/  Please review so that you are aware of the campground rules\, etc.  I am estimating costs for tenting is between $32.00 and $35.00 per night.   They do not take credit cards or reservations but we have never had issues securing sites.  We generally camp along Loop “B”. \nThe plan will be to bike the Carriage paths or hike. \nHopefully the weather will cooperate.  If not\, we can bail at the last minute. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Acadia Hike and Bike
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Acadia Memorial Day weekend trip I will be leading a Hike and Bike on the carriage roads May 28th ( rain date May 29th ). From Bar Harbor Campground we will all meet up at the Brown Mountain parking lot on Route 3 at 8:30 AM (depending on our group needs and weather the time can be adjusted).  Please bring a bike suitable for the carriage roads\, helmet\, means of carrying your food and water.  There will be 2 short hikes as well so in the past we have brought bike locks.  The pace will be moderate to enjoy the views\, distance 12-20 cycling miles plus short hikes\, and will be passing by the Jordan Pond House (other than using the restrooms unlikely we will go inside). Plan on being back to the parking lot no later than 3:30 PM.  In a prior year there was a mini mutiny (thanks Dave)\, so we can adjust hikes and overall distance to accommodate individual needs.  Please TEXT me at 207-450-4707 if you plan on going or with general questions.  I will be creating a group text of all so if we have to move the time or a rain date I will be able to inform everyone quickly.  Again text me a 207-450-4707.  P.S. please bring a spare tube for your bike.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Happy Hour this Friday will be at RIVALRIES in FALMOUTH. They’re located at 2 Hat Trick Drive which is off Route 1 and essentially behind the WalMart. Rivalries has lots of room inside and also offers outside seating on their patio. Parking is free on site. \nPlease Note: We’ve picked a spot north of town to make it convenient for those that might be going up to Freeport to see DAN PELLITIER’S CONCERT at the Credenza. Also\, Dan’s gig starts at 7:00 so we’ll be starting the Happy Hour a bit earlier at 5:00PM. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the advent of cooler weather\, MOAC Happy Hours may now be located at establishments offering limited or no options for outdoor seating.  For each Happy Hour venue\, we will try to give as much information as practical about available seating options.\n\nParticipation in Happy Hour events\, regardless of seating options\, is a personal decision and MOAC assumes no liability for potential health risks associated with attending these activities.\n\nVaccination against COVID-19 (including approved booster shots) is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED\, but not required for participation in Happy Hour events.   Participants are expected to practice safe behaviors including social distancing\, hand washing and wearing a mask when not eating/drinking or when not seated.   Please be respectful of other people’s choices and comfort level.  Do not participate if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting COVID symptoms\, have recently tested positive for COVID or have come into close contact with someone who may be COVID positive.

SUMMARY:Who wants to hike a NE Hundred Highest?
DESCRIPTION:Who wants to hike East Sleeper? East Sleeper has an established hiking trail. It is roughly 12.2 miles via the Downes Brook Trail and  the Kate Sleeper Trail. The trail is off Route 112 (Kancamagus Highway)\, near the Passaconaway Campground. Meet at trailhead at 8:30am. If anyone wants/needs a carpooling option\, please let me know. \n  \nI’m also planning hundred highest  hikes to Vose Spur\, Scar Ridge or Peak Above Nubble. I’m flexible on mountains\, dates and times.. Information below is from :http://4000footers.com. I will do \n  \nPeak Above the Nubble\, also known as Nubble Peak\, or PATN (Pronounced Patton) is a 3\,862 foot mountain in the Twin Range of the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Topographic maps show 2 high point in this area: one being The Nubble and the other being Peak Above the Nubble\, which is the higher point. They are roughly 0.3 miles apart.Could be as little as 3.35 miles roundtrip (but could also be closer to 5 miles depending on the bushwhack route you take.) \nVose Spur– The miles on the Signal Ridge Trail & the Carrigain Notch Trail are easy\, but the bushwhack to the summit is very difficult\, steep and strenuous. It does not always have a herd path.  \nScar Ridge\, also known as Scar Ridge West Peak\, is a 3\,774 foot mountain in the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. There is no trail leading up to the summit of the mountain so the only way to summit this peak is by bushwhacking. \n  \nIf interested please email or text me at 207-219-9622. If I’m at work\, there may be a delay in answering you. – Melanie

SUMMARY:Goose Eye Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Goose Eye Mountain is 3\,870 foot mountain in the Mahoosuc Range in Grafton Notch State Park  and has spectacular views but is a strenuous hike. \nWe will be hiking the  10.1 mile  Wright Trail\, which has an elevation gain of 2\, 821 feet.   Book time is 5:17.  Other descriptions I have read said it takes between 5 to 7 hours to complete. This mountain is on New England’s Hundred Highest list. Meet at the trail head at 8:30 am. \nPlease respond by email or text and let me know about your hiking experience. \nDirections: \nThe Wright Trail ascends the eastern side of Goose Eye from Bull Branch Road. To access the trailhead\, head north out of Bethel\, Maine on RT 26 towards Sunday River Ski Resort. Turn left onto Sunday River Road and follow for approximately 7 miles past the Artist’s Covered Bridge (watch for a sign). The pavement ends and the road will eventually turn left and cross two steel bridges and then almost immediately turn right again. You’ll eventually pass a parking area and a privy on the left. This parking area is for a swimming hole in Bull Branch. Continue on for approximately 1 mile and the trail will leave the left side of the road. There is a small parking area just beyond the trailhead. \nMelanie -207-219-9622

SUMMARY:Hike Glen Boulder Trail
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the expansive Presidential views and the unique geological feature of Glen Boulder on this 5.2 mile rugged round trip hike. We’ll hike up to Slide Peak\, which gives an elevation gain of 2\,850′. There’s the possibility of splitting into different carpool groups if anyone wants a longer hike\, to Boott Spur or Mt. Washington\, although the forecast is for 50+ mph winds at the elevation of Boott Spur or higher. Winds will be more moderate at Slide Peak (25+ mph)\, although I’ve experienced stronger winds than forecast on this hike before. Parts of the Glen Boulder trail involve steep rock scrambling up big boulders and there is some feeling of exposure so it’s not for someone with a fear of heights. \nThe high temp will be 65 at elevation\, warmer on the way up and down. Bring at least 2L of water\, snacks and lunch\, plus a windbreaker. Fully vaccinated\, experienced hikers only\, max group size is 8. RSVP by text or email (207-380-6008) for meeting times and places (we’re not leaving at 2 AM) and to arrange carpooling. \n

SUMMARY:Mt. Eisenhower hike
DESCRIPTION:Hike Mt. Eisenhower this Sunday.  It’s one of the 4\,000 footers in the Presidential Range.  It’s a moderately difficult hike at about 7 miles and 2\,800 feet elevation gain. \nWe’ll hike as a group at a moderate pace\, but the slowest hiker determines the pace.  I’m usually slower coming down than going up.  Book time is 6 hours. \nWe should carpool at least part way\, since parking at the trailhead will probably be tight on this holiday weekend.  Maximum 6 people.  Email me for more details\, including meeting time and place\, gear\, etc.

SUMMARY:Paddling and fun at the Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join me for my annual (outside of pandemics!) July 4th gathering at camp.  Come for an hour or two\, or stay for the afternoon and evening. \nWe may head out for a paddle around 4:00 depending on interest\, but anyone would be welcome to go out whenever.  Bring your boat or borrow one of mine (I have sit on tops\, paddle boards and a canoe.  Also a sail board if it’s windy enough.  Or just relax\, play a lawn game (I have ladder toss\, if someone has corn hole or another to bring\, that would be great). \nWe’ll fire up the charcoal grill around 5:30.  BYO food and drinks.  If you want to bring something to share\, that’s okay\, but some are still leery of sharing communal dishes\, so it’s more BYO than official pot luck. \nI can’t offer a big fireworks display this year – that neighbor has moved away (plus it’s a Monday…)\, but there will probably be other sporadic ones around the area. \n  \nPlease RSVP for the address and so I know who’s coming ~ 207.807.2729 or lmitchell75@aol.com

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting with Freddie Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:The challenges and pleasures of climbing with Freddie Wilkinson\, Marketing Director and Partner at Salt Pump Climbing Company\, Scarborough. \n—————– \nFrom the teahouses of Khumbu Himal to obscure glaciers of the Alaska Range\, Freddie is an alpinist known for his infectious energy and original lines of ascent. He graduated with a degree in history from Dartmouth College\, though he probably spent more time roaming the White Mountains than he did studying. After school\, he fell into the guiding/climbing lifestyle for many years\, which afforded him the opportunity to travel and climb extensively in such places as Alaska\, Patagonia\, Yosemite Valley\, India and Nepal. In 2010\, he published the narrative non-fiction book “One Mountain Thousand Summits: The Untold Story of Tragedy and True Heroism on K2.” Wilkinson is also a partner guide at Cathedral Mountain Guides\, based out of North Conway\, New Hampshire. When not writing or away on expeditions\, he enjoys amateur lamb-farming with his wife Janet and two kids\, Casey and Oscar.

SUMMARY:** Downeast Camping Brooklin ** Space Available
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Spots available! I have had some cancellations. Please contact us if you would like to join!  \nPlease respond to marty@donnellpond.com. Use Downeast Camping in the subject line. I will be in touch regarding payment. \nWe have reserved 4 tenting group campsites at the Reach Knolls Campground in Brooklin\, Maine. The campground is quiet with hot showers and on the ocean. Brooklin is a small village south of Blue Hill\, ME and away from the tourism of many coastal areas. Explore the Blue Hill and Deer Isle Peninsula by bike\, kayak\, or hike. Stonington is 30 minutes away; Acadia National Park is an hour away. The Deer Isle archipelago is a favorite for kayakers\, but there is also plenty of hiking and other activities nearby. \nIf you plan to kayak and want to join a group\, make sure you have your own sea kayak with skirt\, pdf\, etc. Kayak group leaders will want to assess skill levels so that each group has the appropriate skill levels. We will want to keep pods of kayakers to 6 or less because parking can be limited at put ins. If you are interested in learning to kayak\, there are several outfitters nearby that can provide lessons and equipment. \nWe will have a pot luck dinner one night\, on your own/eat out one night\, and maybe a group breakfast SUNDAY morning. These are tent sites; there are RV sites around the corner\, but book now if you want an RV site. Don’t forget your chair for campfire circle. \nCost is initially $20/person. This may change depending on how many people sign up. We will limit this activity to 20 people. Arrive Friday\, July 8\, depart Sunday morning\, July 10 – two nights of fun and three days of adventure. Or stay two more night\, let me know the length of your stay. \nLocation\nOceanfront Camping @ Reach Knolls\n670 Reach Road\, Brooklin ME\nView Map \nPlease respond to marty@donnellpond.com.
