SUMMARY:Sail Bora Bora\, French Polynesian!
DESCRIPTION:After much input about Tahiti\, here’s the trip:  Fly to Papeete\, Tahiti\, maybe stay a day.  Then puddle jumper to Raiatea\, a nearby island where charters start.  The boat is a 43′ sailboat.  I’ll be there early to buy provisions. Sail to several islands including Bora Bora and in many lagoons\, anchoring for spectacular snorkeling.  Several people including myself will tack on a week or two either side of these dates.  I’m shooting for 5 crew -maybe you! –  Cost will be $600 your share of the boat for a week plus food and airfare.  Air looks like around $1\,200 from Boston depending on your itinerary.  I plan to stop in LA for a day.  Round trips from there to Tahiti are about $780.  I’ll need $500 commitment within a week or so to hold the boat!  Now\, don’t be a wimp or say ……  You’re running out of time!  Text/call me for more details as they become available!  Dan@ four78 six835 and ask for lefty!

SUMMARY:Libby River Preserve Walk
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a 1.75 mile walk at this Scarborough Land Trust site right next to Camp Ketcha. The area includes an observation deck overlooking the Libby River\, part of Scarborough Marsh\, and a wooded area with many skunk cabbage blooms (if you haven’t seen one\, they’re very unique). Bring your binoculars if you’re a birder. There are some muddy patches\, so boots are recommended and there are also multiple sections of a thin boardwalk over wet areas. If anyone is interested\, we can add some more mileage with a walk at Ferry Beach\, or along the Eastern Trail. Parking is limited at the Preserve\, so let’s meet at Black Point Community Park (160 Black Point Rd) at 1:00pm and carpool if needed. Show and go at the Community Park.

We also coordinate the Sebago to the Sea Trail a 28-mile trail from Standish to Portland.  Zoom in and click on the preserves in the map below to learn more about our trails (full-screen version available here).

SUMMARY:Postponed - MOAC Earth Day Trail Maintenance Day
DESCRIPTION:Postponed due to forecast for significant rain!   Stayed tuned to this channel for an updated date! \nJoin the MOAC trail crew for the first worktrip of the season on our adopted trails on Pleasant Mountain – the Bald Peak Trail and the Sue’s Way Trail.  We volunteer to maintain these trails in conjunction with the Loon Echo Land Trust\, who are the stewards of all the trails on Pleasant Mountain.  In the spring we have two main goals:  clearing any limbs\, branches\, and blowdowns that have fallen on the trails over the winter. And we will clear debris from all the water bars to be sure they are draining water off the trail properly.  We will also be clipping back brush\, raking leaves\, and picking up litter.  There’s no experience necessary – trail work is not complicated. But I will tell you the trail is not flat – it’s actually a bit steep. But don’t worry – we tend to work pretty slow.   If you want to join us\, please wear sturdy footwear and work clothes\, bring work gloves\, insect repellant\, lunch\, plenty of water\, and a day pack to carry it all.  If you have any questions\, you can always email me\, send me a text\, or hey\, maybe even a phone call!  🙂  So join us for the morning\, join us for the afternoon\, or volunteer all day.  We meet at 9am at the Bald Peak trailhead parking lot\, which is on Mountain Road about a mile past the ski area.  We usually end the day around 3pm-ish.  See ya then !   Dana-h the Maintain-ah \nEmail:  trails@moac.org

SUMMARY:Portland Community Chorus Spring Concert
DESCRIPTION:The 100+ member Portland Community Chorus presents “Requiem and Renewal: Finding Light in Life’s Journey”. Our featured work in this concert is “Requiem for the Living” for choir and chamber orchestra.  Contemporary composer\, Dan Forrest\, has reimagined the traditional requiem by  focusing on a plea for rest and mercy for the living. It is a stunning piece! We will also perform Baba Yetu\, the Lord’s Prayer in Swahili\, Bridge Over Troubled  Water\, a Leonard Bernstein selection from Candide\, and Life is Beautiful by choral  composer\, Randall Stroope.  These pieces together reflect life’s journey through its highs and lows but more  importantly\, the comfort of making the journey together.   Performances are Friday May 2 at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday May 3 at 2:00 p.m. at the South Portland High School Auditorium. Tickets can be purchased in advance through the PCC website or at the door.  Suggested donation $15.00. Give what you can! https://www.portlandcommunitychorus.org/events.html \nThis is a leaderless event\, as I will be on the risers singing!

DESCRIPTION:Posting a Class 2 whitewater trip for Sunday.  I have run this trip annually since joining the club in 1998.   Not a show and go trip.   You need to contact me to discuss experience\, gear and clothing.   Clothing is important since unplanned swimming occurrences do happen periodically.    We normally stop along the route to eat lunch.   So\, food\, water and snacks should be part of the planning.    I have extra gear such as dry bags that can be loaned for the trip if needed.  If interested\, give me a call.   Bob Radowicz   207 653 9315

DESCRIPTION:Join me for a walk/hike at Fuller Farm Preserve in Scarborough. \nMeet at the parking area at 305 Broadturn Rd in Scarborough at 1pm. \nPlan for wet and muddy conditions – waterproof shoes/boots with good tread.  A raincoat would also be a good idea the way our weather is happening these days. \nThere are about 4 miles of trail consisting of dirt packed and boardwalk and a cascading waterfall which should hopefully be full with water.  You can view details and a trail map here: https://scarboroughlandtrust.org/slt-trails/fuller-farm-preserve/ \nElaine 207-650-7417

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Fran Leyman: Trail Angel Extraordinaire
DESCRIPTION:Fran Leyman has been a member of MOAC since she met and then married Carey Kish\, a founding member. In her vows Fran said she had been looking for a companion for long walks ANYWHERE. Little did she know what this really meant\, as she had married a long-distance hiker aficionado. \nFran has always loved adventure; from horseback and motorcycle riding to scuba diving\, kayaking\, rafting\, swimming and hiking. She loves long day hikes but not the three-six month long thru hikes Carey loves. \nSo…starting with Carey’s hike on the Florida Trail\, then the PCT and last year on the CDT\, she decided to become his personal “Trail Angel.” Fran was particularly excited to follow the CDT as she had not traveled in the Rockies since the 1970’s. \nFran and Carey left Maine with Cassie\, their 17-foot Casita camper\, to spend time on their land in Terlingua\, Texas\, just outside Big Bend NP. They day hiked together as much as possible\, but Carey’s writing deadlines often left her hiking alone\, which she truly loves. \nShe made some reservations in parks and private campgrounds to get started\, and on March 31 she drove Carey to Alpine\, Texas\, 80 miles north and sent him off to Lordsburg\, New Mexico to catch a shuttle to the Mexican border to start his hike. \nShe then set off on her own journey\, hiking\, camping\, sightseeing\, providing help to other hikers and meeting Carey about once a week or so. This slide show will show some highlights of her trip\, from gorgeous ceramic murals to grand vistas\, to an underground mine visit\, to crazy rock formations to her favorite treat: hot springs! So\, come along for the ride. \nCome at 6:30 to socialize and help set up. The meeting starts with trip reports and announcements\, followed by Fran’s talk. \n_________________ \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza). Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Memorial Day Weekend Camping in Bar Harbor
DESCRIPTION:Let’s keep a long-standing MOAC tradition alive by welcoming summer with a group campout on Mt. Desert Island. It’s getting harder to do but I think this will work. \nFor those wondering\, Bonnie has family obligations and said she isn’t going to post this trip this year. \nA check of both Seawall and Blackwoods in Acadia National Park show pretty much sold out already. \nAs of 3/22/25\, Hadley’s Point Campground has 29 tent sites and 28 water/electric sites available. This is according to their website. Hadley’s Point is just off Route 3 as you head to Bar Harbor. It is 2.5 miles before Bar Harbor Campground. \n\nField tent sites are $36.08 per night\nWooded tent sites are $38.08 per night\nSites with water/electric are $53.08 per night\n\nThere appears to be a $3.25 campground fee\, plus tax of course. \nTammy and I have reserved site C-39 (water and electric) and it is near to a pod of tent sites (13-20\, 30-36\, 40-42). \nIf you choose to go\, please drop us a line at pcm25me@gmail.com so we know who to expect. \nYou do have to make your own reservations. Deposit amounts vary. For 1-2 nights\, it is the full balance. For 3 or more it is $100. Unfortunately\, they state there are no refunds for a holiday weekend. \nIt might be best to grab a site as soon as you can if you are interested. \nWe will continue the traditional experience of group happy hours and pot luck dinners on Saturday and Sunday evenings in one area to be determined to be the group hangout. Activities during the day will be up to the group. Hiking\, biking\, paddling\, etc.

SUMMARY:Help with prep for a new privy on the AT in the 100 Mile Wilderness!
DESCRIPTION:Ever wondered how those great privies at sites along the Appalachian Trail got there?  This is your chance to find out first hand! Join a Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) work trip as they prepare the site at Rainbow Stream Lean-to for a brand new privy. We’ll be hauling lumber and materials in\, and preparing the site.  The hike in is just over a mile of easy terrain. Come take part in the hauling and digging fun!  You don’t have to be an expert–just bring what skills and strengths you have. Please click on this link for additional details. Rainbow Stream Privy Haul and Site Prep – Maine Appalachian Trail Club \nIMPORTANT FACTS about this trip: It’s an overnight trip\, May 31-June 1\, so we’ll be car camping near the work site on Saturday night. It’s roughly 3-4 hours north of Portland. Driving access involves 30 miles of gravel roads and two locked gates. You cannot get there on your own! Cell phone reception is spotty to nil. There will be bugs.  You do not have to be an MATC member\, but you’ll have to fill out this fast easy online volunteer form.  Volunteer Service Agreement – Natural & Cultural Resources                                Volunteer Sign-Up Form for Groups \nWhen you contact me about this event\, I’ll forward your email to MATC volunteer Laura Flight\, who is in charge of the trip. She’ll be answering questions\, coordinating a meetup place to get us all through the gates together\, and managing any last-minute changes.  If you’ve not taken part in an MATC work trip in the past\, you might be surprised at what a rich rewarding experience it is to be part of something so long-lasting and meaningful. \nP.S.  The privy project will be finished the following weekend. Details coming soon in a separate post. You can come to one weekend\, or both. Possible car-pool from Skowhegan.

SUMMARY:MOAC National Trails Day *RAINDATE SUNDAY 8th* Annual Trail Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:The first Saturday in June is National Trails Day. *”RAINDATE SUNDAY JUNE 8TH!”*   This is your chance to volunteer and make a contribution to maintaining the trails we all love to enjoy – one trail at a time!   MOAC works in conjunction with the Loon Echo Land Trust\, and we have adopted two trails on Pleasant Mountain – the Bald Peak Trail and Sue’s Way Trail.  We’ll start with cleaning out all the waterbars\, raking leaves and debris off the trail\, and clipping back brush.  We will also be working to build a new waterbar above the rock causeway that’s about half way up the trail.  The causeway has fallen into disrepair to the point that hikers are actually walking around it.  The work will involve quarrying new rocks from the surrounding area\, digging a trench and exit drainage\, and setting the rocks in place to create the waterbar.  So be prepared to get dirty\, sweaty\, and feel good about yourself for volunteering to help our hiking trails!    Be sure to wear sturdy footwear\, work clothes\, and work gloves.  Bring plenty of water\, your lunch\, insect repellant\, and a day pack to carry it all.   Volunteer for the morning\, the afternoon\, or join the fun for the whole day.  We meet at 9am at the Bald Peak trailhead parking lot\, on Mountain Road in Bridgton.  It’s about a mile past the ski area.   We usually knock off around 3pm\, dust off the dirt\, and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done. \nGive me a shout if you have any questions ! \nDanah the Maintain-ah   207.650.5197    trails@moac.org

SUMMARY:AT Section Hike - Root\, Rock\, Rut\, Puddle training and trip
DESCRIPTION:Planning on doing a section of the AT later this summer and looking for training and trip partner(s). Last August I hiked up Pleasant Pond Mountain east of Caratunk and spent the night. Over the next 24hrs\, I met +20 AT thru hikers (almost all traveling alone/ single) and a few section hikers that were typically paired up. This trip invigorated me to do more.  Lesson learned from trip. Takes many days hiking and carrying a backpack to get your body ready for this multiday assault on it\, train with the equipment you plan to use is vital\,\, skimp down on the weight\,\, only bring what you need… prefer to do it with someone else. \nLooking for people interested in training over the next (8) weeks and doing a section or two of AT in late August /September.  I have some work flexibility and can plan for blue bird days\, nights\, and trying to do training midweek and weekends \n\nDay hikes or overnights to White Mountain. Living in Portland area makes this < 2 hr drive.\nWeek day hikes after work at Bradbury Mountain. Overnights to check equipment.\nDay hikes and overnights to Carrabasset Valley. Have condo for base camp if needed.\n\nIf you are interested. Me\, I a little fat\, slow and old.. within 20lbs of high school weight\, but have 10 lbs less muscle mass. Moderate pace is by best. 66 going on 26\,\, sometimes. \n  \nMatt K \nTwo zero seven 482 – nine five seven one.

SUMMARY:Independence Day at camp
DESCRIPTION:Join me for my almost annual gathering for the 4th at camp.   Missed a few due to covid and weather.  🙂   I’ll be there by 2:30.  Bring a boat to kayak\, swim or just lounge around.  Come for an hour or two or stay for the duration.  Happy hour at 5:00\, light the grill around 5:30ish.  There are often fireworks to see around the lake\, but no guarantees for how close they might be.  Most folks head out for official fireworks in other locals as dusk sets in. \nStandard MOAC BYO food and drink and maybe something to share.  I’ll have charcoal and basic condiments (ketchup\, etc.) \nI have extra SUPs\, sit on top kayaks and other outside toys.  You MUST bring PFDs and whistles with you if you go on the water.  I have extra of those\, too.  Hit the contact button to get address if don’t know it already\, upper west side of Little Sebago Lake.

Besides sailing\, Bob also enjoys hiking\, backcountry skiing\, climbing and recently took up competitive running\, which consumes much of his time. He is a veteran of over 25 trips to the Swiss Alps where he dabbles in mountain running\, alpine climbing\, hiking and beer drinking. He has done 13 marathons\, just completing his second Boston Marathon in April 2025. \nCome at 6:30 to socialize and help set up. The meeting starts with trip reports and announcements\, followed by Bob’s talk. \n_________________ \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).
