SUMMARY:Last of the Right Whales – movie\, documentary — one showing only!
DESCRIPTION:Movie\, tonight\, Wednesday the 27th\, LAST OF THE RIGHT WHALES\, at Nickolodean Theatre\, downtown Portland\, 7:00 pm \nText me 251 if 5491 you’d like to meet up in advance for a quick brew or bite to eat\, or possibly a brew afterwards to discuss the movie. \nI’ll be the person in the lobby wearing a tneck\, fleece\, and raincoat (next to all the others wearing the same thing) on this drippy day. \nDon’t miss this documentary — one showing onlty! \n\n\n\nLast of the Right Whales\nNorth Atlantic right whales are dying faster than they can reproduce.  With just over 330 remaining\, these great whales rarely die of natural causes. Instead they are run over by ships or suffer lethal injuries from fishing gear. If we don’t stop killing them\, in 20 years they could be extinct. \nFrom the only known calving grounds to the shifting feeding grounds\, Last of the Right Whales follows the North Atlantic right whale migration and the people committed to saving a species still struggling to recover from centuries of hunting. Now climate change is forcing right whales further north in search of food\, putting them on a collision course with deadly ships and fishing gear. \nWith unprecedented access to film the whale migration\, Last of the Right Whales brings a message of hope about the most at risk great whale on the planet.

SUMMARY:Easy Backpack to Gentian Pond Shelter
DESCRIPTION:This will be a great chance for those with little backpacking experience to get out and test your gear\, though experienced folks are welcome as well. It will be a relatively short hike with one short steep section to the shelter on Friday\, (depending on the roads\, either about 2 or 3.5miles) and then we’ll day hike Mt Success on Saturday. It might be a bit early to dispense with your traction aids as there WILL be some icy sections on the upper sections of success. For those interested we can go find the DC-3 plane crash near the summit of Success. \nWe can still get some cold weather in early May. I will watch the weather and advise. I am limiting this to 6 people\, myself included. \nABOUT ME:\nI’ve been backpacking for nearly 50 years. I’m one of the original MOAC’ers and moved away to the hinterlands (Farmington) so I haven’t been active recently. \nPlease contact me to let me know your experience and whether you need help with gear. Our meeting place will be in Bethel at the information Center (right near the movie theater). The image is of the outlet at Gentian Pond (It’s one of my paintings)

SUMMARY:May General Meeting - The Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) with Molly Geiger
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1988 (one year older than MOAC)\, the idea of a coastal water trail in Maine was born in the late 1970s following a land survey conducted by the State of Maine of the uninhabited coastal islands. As part of an evaluation between the State and the non-profit Island Institute in the mid-80’s\, Dave Getchell\, Sr.\, a founder of MITA\, explored the length of the coast and identified some 40 public islands suitable for recreational use. These public properties eventually formed the nucleus of the original Maine Island Trail. \nToday\, the trail itself has steadily grown to encompass the entire coast of Maine – from New Hampshire to Canada – and to include well over 200 islands and mainland sites. But it is not that simple. \nJoin us as Molly Geiger\, MITA Membership Manager\, give an overview of MITA’s history\, stewardship work\, and mission of providing access to Maine’s spectacular islands. You’ll learn more about how you can get involved in the MITA community\, whether through volunteer work\, events\, or by becoming a member. \n——————— \nMolly joined the MITA staff in fall 2019. A native Mainer\, she grew up in the Midcoast region\, exploring the islands and coastline from a young age. She received her BA in Anthropology from Bard College\, and has worked in the conservation and education fields since 2006\, including a several year stint at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago. Molly got her first kayak as a teenager and has been an enthusiastic boater ever since. Most recently she is enjoying learning the challenges and joys of stand up paddle boarding on the Maine coast. \nJoin us on Zoom HERE.

SUMMARY:Ossippee River Trip
DESCRIPTION:I have run this river trip for MOAC most years since joining the club back in 1998. 7 miles of Class 2 whitewater. This is not a raft trip. Canoes and or Whitewater Kayaks are the river craft used here. I need to chat with interested participants to understand their level of experience and what gear they are bringing. We have had occasional out of boat experiences (I had one early on) and want to make sure participants have the proper gear in case of an unplanned swim. The water is still cold and hypothermia is a significant concern if one leaves their boat. We usually stop for lunch along the way. We usually have significant fun doing this. We may also have some folks join us from the Penobscot Paddle and Chowder Society (another outdoor group here in Maine that concentrates on water sports). If interested\, give me a shout. Bob

SUMMARY:Hot Air Balloon Festival in Vermont\, Camping
DESCRIPTION:Once a year Experimental Balloon Hot Air Balloonists get together at the grass airport in Post Mills\, VT. Weather permitting\, I will fly 5 times\, once Friday evening at 6ish\, the early mornings (6am) and late afternoons (7pm) Saturday and Sunday. I am looking for persons to fly and to crew. You may come for the weekend or just the day.  \n  \nBallooning: flights are about an hour (weather and safety permitting). The whole event\, coffee\, set up\, fly\, fold up\, drive back to launch site takes 3 to 4 hours. Less if the chase crew finds us.  \n  \nCamping: I have one ten man tent good for about 3 people. Camping is free. Bring your own food. I have one stove\, mostly for coffee\, and one generator (battery) to keep our devices charged. There is little or no cell service\, no internet. I will bring a cooler with water\, food\, and snacks. There are portapotties\, water\, but otherwise you need to be self sustaining. Post Mill is isolated\, in the mountains\, and about 40 minutes north of Dartmouth College. Most outdoor fun mountain and water activities available during the day.  \n  \nNote\, I fly EXPERIMENTAL balloons\, that means I made the aircraft myself\, that flying with me involves risk. There are no guarantees the weather will cooperate. You will see the most exotic balloons in the US at this event. This is in my top three places to fly in the US \n  \nAfter the flight\, survivors enjoy champagne. Questions? 727-470-3613

SUMMARY:Union River Evening Paddle
DESCRIPTION:Paddle the Union River in Ellsworth Saturday night with a full moon rising at about 6. The tide is not quite right going out\, but it will be coming in on the way back. Put in at the Ellsworth Harbor Park and Marina\, paddle to the mouth of the river and return\, usually about 2 hours. This is a great paddle\, since there is never much boat traffic. Enjoy possibly bald eagles\, seals\, loons\, cormorants. Bring bug dope. \nThis river paddle is suitable for canoes\, and kayaks\, lake or sea. PFD required and must be worn. \nPlease let me know if you can make it: call or text 207-801-1488 or email to marty@donnellpond.com. \nIn keeping with the new waiver policy\, you will need to provide emergency contact information. If you want to send it in advance\, that will simplify things at the put in.

SUMMARY:Lily Bay Group Camping Site
DESCRIPTION:UPDATED TO REFLECT PRICE\, LINK TO RESERVATION FORM\, AND REGULAR CAMPSITE INFO. \nMOAC has reserved what is called the most sought after group campsite in the Maine State Park System. We wanted beautiful late August but we got late May. Oh well. Early\, yes\, but we are hearty. It is a three night reservation. Friday through Monday. \nTo attend this weekend\,  please be fully vaccinated. \nThis trip is being co-led by Nancy Dorrans and Tammy/Peter Mullen. Nancy will handle the registration and payment part and Tammy/Peter the logistics. \nThe cost for the weekend is $25 regardless of how many nights you plan to stay. Max\, three nights. \nTo be placed on the waitlist\, CLICK HERE. \nPlease email us at pcm25me@gmail.com or njdorran@gmail.com with questions. \nFor those that might prefer a camper to a tent\, it would be possible to stay in the State Park campground itself and come hang out. These campsites will be first-come/first-served as reservations don’t start until the day we leave. The campground and the group site are not close together. A mile or two maybe? But it is an option. \nMud Brook Group Campsite is just north of Lily Bay State Park. Capacity is 50 with a large fire circle\, and a small cooking shelter if needed. It is surrounded on three sides by Moosehead Lake. It has a water source and a vault toilet. Showers in the State Park are  available but it is a drive to them. \nThe park is 8 miles out of Greenville on the eastern shore of Moosehead Lake. \nPaddle the lake or any of the other countless bodies of water nearby? Hike? Bike? Fish? Moose watch? Explore Greenville? Sit and read? Sit and read and drink wine? \nMore details will be coming so check back.

SUMMARY:Camping at Acadia National Park
DESCRIPTION:After a 2-year absence\, I am resurrecting the annual MOAC Memorial Weekend camping trip at Acadia National Park.  We will be camping at Bar Harbor Campground.   See link:  https://www.thebarharborcampground.com/  Please review so that you are aware of the campground rules\, etc.  I am estimating costs for tenting is between $32.00 and $35.00 per night.   They do not take credit cards or reservations but we have never had issues securing sites.  We generally camp along Loop “B”. \nThe plan will be to bike the Carriage paths or hike. \nHopefully the weather will cooperate.  If not\, we can bail at the last minute. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Acadia Hike and Bike
DESCRIPTION:In conjunction with the Acadia Memorial Day weekend trip I will be leading a Hike and Bike on the carriage roads May 28th ( rain date May 29th ). From Bar Harbor Campground we will all meet up at the Brown Mountain parking lot on Route 3 at 8:30 AM (depending on our group needs and weather the time can be adjusted).  Please bring a bike suitable for the carriage roads\, helmet\, means of carrying your food and water.  There will be 2 short hikes as well so in the past we have brought bike locks.  The pace will be moderate to enjoy the views\, distance 12-20 cycling miles plus short hikes\, and will be passing by the Jordan Pond House (other than using the restrooms unlikely we will go inside). Plan on being back to the parking lot no later than 3:30 PM.  In a prior year there was a mini mutiny (thanks Dave)\, so we can adjust hikes and overall distance to accommodate individual needs.  Please TEXT me at 207-450-4707 if you plan on going or with general questions.  I will be creating a group text of all so if we have to move the time or a rain date I will be able to inform everyone quickly.  Again text me a 207-450-4707.  P.S. please bring a spare tube for your bike.
