SUMMARY:Climb Mt Eisenhower
DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt. Eisenhower via Edmonds Path\, 6.6 miles round trip and 2\,750′ elevation gain. This is a rocky trail but well graded and no real rock scrambling is required. Be prepared for black flies and cool conditions\, and possibly a shower on the way down – bring an extra layer for the top section\, and be ready for some snow. Also bring at least 2 liters water and lunch. The reward is truly stunning views\, if the top isn’t in a cloud. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please let me know your experience on 4\,000 footers when you RSVP. Max group size is 8 – please email or text for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Mary
DESCRIPTION:Are you eager to put your butt onto a bike seat and ride 180 miles in 3 days for a great charity?! Well\, MOAC has a Trek Across Maine Team\, the Trek raises money for the American Lung Association\, and we all want clean air for our MOAC activities. \nCome join us! \nThe team has raised upwards of $50\,000 doing the Trek since 2016. \nFeel free to contact me with any questions\, but there are various training rides to join around the area to prepare. It’s very well supported with three rest stops per day\, and no sustained distances any day > 20 miles before option of a rest stop\, overnights are at Bates and St. Joe’s this year.  Great fun\, great people\, and an experience like no other. Current team members are a mix of MOAC members and non-members\, so if you have a non-MOAC buddy\, they can also be on the team! \nCheck out the MOAC Trek page link for more details!

SUMMARY:Volunteer Team at the Trek Across Maine
DESCRIPTION:Cheer for MOAC members riding the Trek.  Some of these cyclists have been at it for literally decades!!  The Trek is a really fun event departing from Thomas Point Beach on Friday\, June 16th.  The Trek raises funds for the research of chronic and terminal lung disease\, quit smoking guidance and support and other medical and educational efforts in Maine related to clean air and health.  Friday’s route is from Brunswick to Bates College. \nOur assignment will be based on how many volunteers step forward.  I’ll be donating my time in any event.  The water and snack spots are a blast as we work with corporate sponsors who supply the goodies.  There might be hot chocolate\, depending on the weather; or ice water or both!  Apples to cut\, granola bars\, whatever…these riders are burning calories big time!  This is a rain or shine event.  That’s what rain gear is for!\nLet’s step up and support a good cause and the volunteer riders with our time and spirit. \nMaine’s biggest and best cycling event is back! See old friends\, make new ones\, and enjoy the 39th annual Trek Across Maine. \nCome explore new neighborhoods and landmarks\, such as Thomas Point Beach & Campground\, and St. Joseph’s College. From the baked potato bar at Bates College\, to Team Tent City with plenty of lawn games\, music\, beer and snacks\, and everything in between\, the ALA welcomes you to volunteer in 2023!

SUMMARY:Portland Bike Party!
DESCRIPTION:6/16/23 UPDATE: Weather forecast has gradually improved.  Temps now predicted to be in the low 60’s with a 20% chance of precipitation.  Who’s feeling lucky?  I’ll be there … putting the Adventure in Maine Outdoor Adventure Club! \nWeather report for Friday currently doesn’t look promising\, but posting this in case the outlook improves.  Assume event canceled/attend at own risk if outlook continues to look dour … \nI did this last month with another MOACer and it was an absolute hoot.  150 riders of all ages on a meandering 5 mile bike ride through the streets of Portland (pace best described as … glacial).  Ride stops midway somewhere along the route\, everyone dismounts and … has an impromptu half-hour long dance party!  Very well organized with safety volunteers stopping traffic at major intersections.  Riders festooned their mounts with all manner of horns\, bells and enough LED lights to decorate downtown for the holidays.  One guy had an adult tricycle with a pair of rock concert-sized speakers\, blaring raucous music the whole way.   No frickin’ clue what was powering those beasts\, but they gave the term “urban assault vehicle” a whole new meaning.   At the dance party\, another rider\, whose bike sported a pirate flag atop a kayak paddle\, was filling people’s waterbottles from a giant box of wine.  But only if you referred to him for the evening as … “Nutmeg”. \nNo\, of course none of this makes any sense!   Think Burning Man\, but on two wheels.  If you’re not rocking some kind of noise maker or festive bicycle lighting\, you’re missing the point.  But even if you don’t have any of that\, just bring your bike and join me for an evening of pedal-powered insanity!  Meet at North Boyd Street (Austin Street Brewery/Kennedy Park) in Portland’s Bayside neighborood at 6:45pm.  Perhaps noshing and libations afterwards\, depending on group interest. SUMMARY:July 4th upta camp
DESCRIPTION:Paddle\, swim\, eat\, drink and be merry…maybe nap in the hammock…  So far\, the weather looks good for the 4th and I plan on spending the day at camp on Little Sebago Lake.  I’ll be there by 2:00 and you’re welcome to come anytime after that.  Stay a couple of hours or the whole afternoon.  The grill will get lit around 5:00 pm.  BYO meat for the grill\, drinks and a dish to share.  I have several chairs\, but bringing your own might be handy\, depending on how many people show up. \nPleas RSVP if you plan on attending and I’ll send the address\, parking is somewhat limited\, so carpooling can be helpful. \nI have a few paddle boards and kayaks (mostly sit on top\, plus safety gear) and a canoe I can share or you can bring your own boat.  There isn’t a real set time for paddling\, it will depend on the group and people can go out any time.  But we’ll shoot for a 3:30ish group start on the water.  However\, you also can just hang out at camp if you don’t want to paddle. \n

SUMMARY:Climb Boott Spur Trail
DESCRIPTION:Climb the scenic and very challenging Boott Spur Trail to its junction with Davis Path\, 6.6 miles round trip and 3\,400′ of elevation gain. There’s a lot of rock scrambling on this hike\, and several steep sections. Be prepared for mosquitoes and showery conditions – bring your rain gear. Bring at least 2 liters water\, lunch and a warm hat and gloves for the highest sections\, which are above 5\,000′. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please call me at 207-380-6008 to discuss your experience. Max group size is 8 – please email or text for meeting places and times\, and carpool arrangements (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We’ll probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Camp Day in Gray on Little Sebago
DESCRIPTION:We had so much fun at Jean’s yesterday\, I decided to post for a day at camp at my place in Gray.  Especially since there are (at least for now) no warnings of thunderstorms!  I’ll be there by 2:00\, come any time after that and swim\, paddle\, eat\, or nap in the hammock.  Stay for a couple of hours or for the duration.   🙂   I’m not planning a particular time for a group paddle\, but people can go out whenever.  I have a few sit-on-top kayaks and paddle boards or you can bring your own boat.  Or stay on shore and relax.  Fun hour (so as not to confuse it with MOAC happy hour) around 5:00 and we’ll light the grill around 5:30 ish for BBQ. \nAs usual – BYO drinks\, snacks and protein for the grill and a dish to share for dinner if you stay.  I’ll provide charcoal and have most condiments\, as well as paper plates\, etc.  But if you bring your own reusables\, the planet will thank you. \nShow and go if you decide to come last minute\, but I do appreciate a heads up so I have an idea of how many to expect.  lmitchell75@aol.com \n255 Westwood Rd in Gray.  If you have a boat you can drive down to unload\, park in the space by the road behind the camp. \n

DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt Carrigain\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers – a rugged hike of 10.6 miles round trip and 3\,500′ elevation gain. Be prepared to cross a stream that may require taking boots off\, although recent trail reports are saying it’s rock hop-able. The weather looks great on Sunday – I’ve climbed this one twice with no views\, so I’m looking forward to finally getting what some people consider the best views in the Whites. \nBring lunch\, at least 2 liters of water – preferably 3\, and a warm hat and layers for the top in case of wind. RSVP for meeting places and times and to carpool – we’re not leaving at 2 AM. Fully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. SUMMARY:Lily Bay State Park Camping Trip
DESCRIPTION:The group site at Lily Bay State Park is called Mud Brook. It is also called the most sought-after group site reservation in the Maine State Park system. Mud Brook is located on the east shore of Moosehead Lake (the largest lake in Maine)\, approximately eight miles out of Greenville. And MOAC has it for three nights: August 11-14. It is a three hour drive from Portland. \nThe group site has water on three sides and can host 40+ campers. There is an Adirondack Shelter\, and an outhouse. We also have access to the main campground’s flush toilets and free hot showers but it is a 2-mile drive to those facilities. \nActivities include hiking\, camping\, wildlife watching\, photography\, canoeing\, and kayaking (bring your own boats). Let’s not forget reading\, contemplating one’s naval\, and deep conversation. We will be looking for people to volunteer to lead activities. \nThe cost is $30 per person whether you stay the whole weekend or not.  We will provide breakfast on Sunday morning (details on that as we get closer). The rest of the time you are on your own for food. Contributions to share will always be accepted for social hours. Payment through Venmo (Tammy-Mullen-5) or by check will secure your spot.  This is non-refundable but you can transfer your space to a MOAC friend. \nPlease RSVP to pcm25me@gmail.com. \nIf Venmo poses a security question\, the answer is 0047. \nChecks to Peter Mullen\, 38 Lawrence Rd\, Gray\, Maine\, 04039. \n

SUMMARY:Hot Air Ballooning in Auburn\, Almost FULL\,
DESCRIPTION:Great Falls Balloon Festival. I will be flying in Lewiston/Auburn August 17\, 18\, 18\, 20. Flight times are 6 am and 6pm each day\, weather permitting. The Friday and Saturday night flights (the most popular) are full with people who have helped with ballooning. However\, there is plenty of space on the morning flights. The whole event\, setting up the balloon\, flying\, folding up\, getting back to the starting field\, takes 3-4 hours. If you are interested in crewing or flying\, please contact me and we can go over the details. NOTE\, I fly an EXPERIMENTAL balloon\, that means I built it myself\, the FAA will only certify the balloon exists\, not that the balloon is safe. If you want to be added to the WAIT LIST\, please contact me.
