SUMMARY:Sorry\, we are FULL - MH&T’s Flagstaff Hut
DESCRIPTION:Maine Huts & Trails operates four “Eco-Lodges” in northern Maine\, and for the weekend of October 27-29\, their Flagstaff Hut is all ours. The hut is located on the eastern shore of Flagstaff Lake\, about a 2.5 hour drive from Portland. \nThis will be our 10th year leading this trip and each year it is an experience to remember. Good company\, good food\, and the Maine woods. How could it not be? \nFlagstaff Hut (in name only) is an off-the-grid lodge (capacity of 44-48) with amenities. Electricity is provided by solar panels and a generator. Hot water via propane\, and heat\, if needed\, via wood. The building has composting toilets\, showers\, and a full commercial kitchen with refrigeration. \nThe cost for this weekend is $100 per person. \nSleeping is bunk room style (earplugs) in two separate buildings apart from the main lodge (earplugs). \nYou need to bring a sleeping bag\, pillow cover (recommended)\, clothes\, and personal items (earplugs). You will need to provide your own food for Friday\, Saturday morning\, and Saturday lunch. You DO NOT need to bring anything to cook with or on. You will have full use of the commercial kitchen. In a process perfected by Tammy\, you will be asked bring a small amount of food to contribute to the cause for Saturday dinner. More on that later. Sunday breakfast is a full spread paid for by part of your payment for the weekend. \nCoffee/tea/hot chocolate will be provided at least in the mornings and for some reason\, Happy Hours tend to materialize in the late afternoons. No obligation to participate but donations for those are welcome as well. \nThe hut is designed to be remote. You cannot drive to it. Gear can be dropped off at the service gate to shorten the distance but all must be carried in and out. We try to have as many carts and wagons as people are willing to bring to share to help move stuff. Your vehicle will be two miles from the hut when parked in the lot. Please keep this in mind as you plan on what you are bringing. \nActivities can include hiking\, mountain biking\, paddling\, navel gazing\, reading\, puzzles\, drinking wine\, staring at the fire. Music if the right people show up. Keep moving every second\, or do nothing. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. \nChecks can be made to Peter Mullen and mailed to 38 Lawrence Rd\, Gray\, 04039. $100 per person for the weekend\, \nWe also accept Venmo. Pay to tammy-mullen-5. Please put “MOAC” in the comments. \nWe look forward to seeing old friends and new faces at Flagstaff this fall.

SUMMARY:Rocky Horror Picture Show and Bonfire "Great Scott!"
DESCRIPTION:Come to Center Conway\, NH… 1 hour from Portland.  “It’s just a jump to the left” \nTired of the getting the trick instead of the treat?  “I would like\, if I may\, to take you on a strange journey.” \nDon’t like sitting by the door all night to hand out candy to strangers? “Let’s do the time warp again!” \n“There’s a light at the Frankenstein place”…  I own the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show and let’s watch it on Halloween.  Wear a costume if you want to liven things up. “So come up to the lab and see what’s on the slab.  I see you shiver with anticipation.”  We can have a fire in the fire-it afterwards.  “A night out It was a night they were going to remember for a very long time.” \nLet’s have a potluck at 6pm first.  Stay overnight if you want… we can go hiking the next day/or leave from here to go to work!  “Dammit Janet!” \nText me if you would like to come\, let me know what you would like to bring to the potluck…. and you can get directions to my home.  Come prior to 6pm if you want. “Pretty Groovy” \nSue 207-807-3549 \n“And Crawling\, On The Planet’s Face\, Some Insects\, Called The Human Race. Lost In Time\, And Lost In Space… And Meaning.”  The Criminologist\n

SUMMARY:MOAC General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Adventuring in New Zealand\nPat Johnson Will Recount Escapades in Kiwiland\nNew Zealand lives up to the hype. The land is more magical than its movie sets: Volcanoes smolder\, fjords are pinch-yourself pretty and at beaches hot water pools bubble up from under the surf. Sublime forests\, mountains\, lakes\, fjords and beaches have made New Zealand one of the world’s best hiking destinations. \nI’ll never forget my five-week trip there in Jan/Feb 2020. We kayaked Abel Tasman NP and backpacked one of the “Great Walks\,” the four-day Routeburn Trek; immersed ourselves in Maori culture in Rotorua; hiked Mt. Cook; saw glowworms in a cave; mountain-biked in Queenstown; and hiked across the Tongariro\, a fiery landscape of craters and boiling mud. \nYet it’s not just the landscape that reels you in – it’s also the people. Tolerant\, hospitable and eco-conscious\, New Zealand is a sanctuary in a turbulent world. \nCome join us for a photo tour of this marvelous place during the monthly MOAC membership meeting on Nov. 1! \nPat Johnson has been an active MOAC member since 2002 as a regular trip leader\, former board member and past president. An avid hiker\, xc skier\, bicyclist\, sea kayaker and traveler\, she recently returned from a two-week trip hiking in the Italian Dolomites. \n\nIn addition to the featured presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Sorry\, we are FULL – Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:For 32 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nExcept for the provided lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it resumed last year. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider.  Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:MOAC Trail Maintenance Day
DESCRIPTION:And now\, Ladies and Gentlemen\,  It’s time fooooooor….   RAKEFEST !!    Please join us for a day of trail maintenance on MOAC’s adopted trails on Pleasant Mountain – the Bald Peak and Sue’s Way trails.  By mid-November\, most of the leaves have fallen from their perch on high.  So this is our chance to rake them off of the trails.  Hikers know the challenge of wet leaves covering wet roots and slippery rocks.  Trail maintainers know the importance of keeping the waterbars free of leaves and debris so that rainwater can be diverted from the trail.  Less rainwater running down the trail equals less erosion of the trail!  We start at 9am and meet at the Bald Peak trailhead parking lot; which is on Mountain Road\, Bridgton\, about 1 mile past the ski area.  We usually end around 3 or 4 pm.  But you can join us for just the morning\, or just the afternoon\, or spend the whole day volunteering and giving back to the trails we love.  If you’ve never done trail maintenance before\, not to worry – there’s no experience needed.  Although you’ll probably want to know how to operate a leaf rake. 😉   MOAC owns a great collection of trail tools but with only a couple of rakes.  So\, we need more cowbell\, err… I mean\, rakes!   Bring yours if you have one. \nAlso\, you’ll want to bring a day pack for your water and lunch.  Wear sturdy footwear\, work clothes\, and bring a pair of work gloves.  Watch the weather forecast and bring appropriate warm and dry layers if necessary.   Please let me know if you plan to join us – email\, text\, phone call\, carrier pigeon\, whatever works for you.  Although the latter may cause a delay in my response. 🙂 \nThis will be our last maintenance day of the year\, so if you’ve wanted to volunteer to help our trails\, this is your chance! \nThanks\, \nDana the Maintain-ah!

SUMMARY:Hike Pleasant Mountain
DESCRIPTION:Thanksgiving day Hike. It’s going to be a beautiful day\, and the warmest day of the week! Instead of sitting inside and stuffing yourself\, let’s climb a mountain! \nPleasant mountain is close by and offers great views. It’s not too difficult either\, considered a moderate hike in the AMC book. We climb the warmer and sunnier SW ridge trail.  It is 1650+ feet of elevation gain in  3 miles and we will move along at a faster than book time pace. We can  then head over to Big Bald Peak another easy 1.3 miles for a total of 8.5 miles and return the way we came this is optional if you need to get back for a late day dinner. There may be snow and almost definitely  wet trails. So bring traction i.e. stabilicers. Dress in layers\, bring lunch or snack and water. \nWe likely will stop on the way back for food and drinks\, depending on what is open. Maybe bring something with you for HH at the TH and a snack to share. \nContact me by text(207-210-0509) or email (hikinurs@gmail.com) if you would like to come and or carpool and for meeting time. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Hike Pleasant Mountain and Bald Peak \nHiking Pleasant Mountain Denmark ME via Southwest Ridge trail. \nI think this is about 7.6 miles round trip.  Possible to cut it short by skipping Bald Peak. \nLooking to get on trail 9:00.  I can meet at Burchard Dunn School in New Glouchester which is across the street from Pineland Farms at 8:00 if you want to carpool.  Else meet at parking area across from Spiked Ridge Rd. \nNot a high elevation peak\, so I don’t think there is any need for microspikes or traction on this one.  I took about 4:30 the last time I did this at a brisk pace. \n  \n  \n

Come see if you recognize anyone out of their outdoor apparel. \nWe will have a 50/50 raffle this year to benefit Adaptive Outdoor Education Center. Please bring plenty of extra cash that you don’t plan to spend at the bar. \nMOAC will provide turkey and ham. \nYOU CONTRIBUTE POTLUCK. Please bring something delicious to share (appetizer\, main dish\, side\, dessert.) \n\n\n\nEarly party! Noon-2:00pm\nTo make this happen\, we need your help with transporting supplies from the storage unit to our venue\, Dave Francis heads up that\, setting up the \, room (tables\, chairs) in addition to decorating. We’ll need about at least 12 volunteers\, the more volunteers\, the merrier! Sing along to holiday music and enjoy a snack while we decorate.\n\nAs you arrive\, check in with Janet and Dana Thurston at the door. If you’ve paid already you will be on their list. You can pay for your dues and $15.00 tickets at the door. More volunteers are needed to help at the door and sell raffle tickets.\n\nOther positions needed are just a few on the food committee which helps direct where the pot luck items go on the tables\, plugs in crockpots\, etc.\, checks on the buffet occasionally\, empty dishes will be placed under the table. MOAC is not responsible for cleaning any dishes.\n\nPlease label your dishes and utensils. Also\, it is helpful if you write the name of your food item on a provided index card and ingredients or if it is gluten free\, vegan\, vegetarian.\nThanks to Marianne Hubert and Eileen Whynot for cooking the turkey and ham.\n\nAfter the band stops for the evening the big cleanup begins! All are welcome to participate in that fun activity!\n\nBig  question\, I would like to eliminate hot beverages and just offer seltzer or regular water. Respond to andiandjeff@yahoo.com.\n\n\nPlease also email me to how you’d like to volunteer. Linda Johnson has done so much to make this shindig happen. Kudos to her!\n\nYou may contact me by email about your non-alcohol offering choice to eliminate hot beverages ( it’s an electricity issue as well as volunteer). What is your choice of volunteering\, if any.\n\nLet’s party!\nThis year’s party chairperson\,\nAndi Bartlett\n\n

SUMMARY:Portland Trails Holiday Dash 5K
DESCRIPTION:Let’s get together and burn off a few calories from the previous night’s MOAC Holiday Party!  And help out an allied trails organization with their biggest fundraising event of the year!  Whether you’re planning to run\, jog or walk\, join us and ring in the holiday season in MOAC outdoor-active style!  Less of a race (although there’s always a few confused souls who utterly miss the point and actually compete) and more of a 3.1 mile long pedestrian holiday parade.  Participants are encouraged to dress up in festive garb and just have a blast.  And why not?  Race route will be alongside Portland’s iconic Polar Express Narrow Gauge Railroad.  With a special extension to take in the scenic East End water treatment plant\, always an olfactory delight!  Your MOAC event organizer will be walking most of the course\, although pride and vanity might compel him to push his creaky knees and jog the last 200 yards – for the all important cow-bell enhanced\, race volunteer-cheered\, finish line photo-op!  Entry fee is a spendy $40\, but remember this is for a good cause.  And it includes a free gift (often a Portland Trails embroidered winter hat) and hot chocolate at the end.  I’ll be springing for the extra $15 meal ticket for the post race brunch and complimentary pint at nearby Ri Ra’s.  Come join us!

SUMMARY:Cancelled: prayer for snow
DESCRIPTION:Cancelling this.  It does not look like we will get significant snow.  I don’t really want to take a walk in the rain\, maybe I’ll play pickleball or something… \n  \nThere’s a chance of snow friday into Saturday.  This winter has been a big disapointment\, so I’m praying this weekend is the first ski day of the year.  There won’t be enough snow to open Pineland\, so I’m coming up with plan B.  We need about 6 inches of snow to make this work\, which may be a bit of a stretch… \nMeet at Pettengil farm Freeport ME.  On Pettingil road\, just off Bow street\, 1.5 miles from downtown. \nTrails are not groomed\, so it will be a bit of a backcountry experience\, but I’ll set a track\, so it should be pretty simple to follow.  There’s some stairs you’ll need to remove skis for a short bit on the trail. \nIf we don’t get snow\, or it’s a wintry mix\, this could be a walk in rain/slush\, or we can just go downtown for a cup of coffee.  Keep your fingers crossed! \n

We can make a final call Sunday after seeing what they get tomorrow…snow or rain… \nSki Conditions 1/12/24: We will be grooming this morning. Trails will be open (in one form or another) at noon. We hope to set a track on most trails. There may be some thin spots. Frozen granular snow will predominate. Check back daily here or www.wfltmaine.org for daily conditions and warming hut hours.
