SUMMARY:MOAC General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Bob Crowley\, a past winner of the reality television series Survivor and co-owner of Maine Forest Yurts\, will give the featured presentation at the January general meeting.A stellar storyteller and lifelong adventurer\, Bob is a retired Gorham high school physics teacher who has also been a forester\, a lobsterman\, a first mate on a research boat for the Smithsonian Institution in Canada and an entomologist for the USDA.Bob has spent summers on a remote Casco Bay island where in the 1970s he built an eco-friendly summer cabin using recycled material and requiring a fraction of the energy of the average U.S. home. Other structures he has built from recycled material include wharfs\, saunas and a chicken coop.In 2008\, Bob joined the cast of Survivor: Gabon; 39 days later\, at the age of 57\, he was voted the oldest winner in the show’s history. He also won the “Sprint Survivor of the Season\,” in which fans voted for their favorite player. \nThe following year\, Bob retired from 25 years of teaching\, and with his wife Peggy and their adult children moved to Durham. Here the family opened Maine Forest Yurts on Runaround Pond in Durham\, where they offer an eco-friendly camping experience with four yurts on a 100-acre site. \nThe family also runs the nonprofit Durham Warriors Project\, which allows disabled veterans and other nonprofits to stay for free at Maine Forest Yurts. \nPage\, Bob’s daughter and business partner\, may join him at the meeting. She said he’ll likely discuss his love for the outdoors\, his work with Maine Forest Yurts and his experience on Survivor\, yet noted “every talk he does is different” and he “enjoys sharing all the adventures of his life.” \nBob gets rave reviews from MOAC Board Member Diane Hessemann\, who has enjoyed his stories around the fire during her stays at Maine Forest Yurts. \n\nIn addition to the featured presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Pisgah Hill Preserve Full Moon Trek
DESCRIPTION:Come join us atop Pisgah Hill in New Gloucester to howl at the beautiful full Snow Moon as it rises majestically over nearby Bradbury Mountain!  The 12th installment of Royal River Conservation Trust’s extremely popular annual hike\, this year promises crisp\, clear skies for a fantastic experience.  This is an accessible\, low intensity 1.6 mile (total distance up and down) trek to the hilltop where we’ll be greeted with RRCT’s signature hospitality\, including hot cocoa\, s’mores and a roaring campfire to keep warm. \nLet’s plan on our MOAC contingent meeting at the Doughtery Road trailhead at 5:00pm (74 Dougherty Road\, New Gloucester).  That way\, we can catch RRCT’s introductory remarks\, and enjoy the sunset before setting out at dusk for the brief amble up to the top of Pisgah Hill.  Bring appropriate clothing (layers are best)\, hat\, gloves\, lighting (headlamp is recommended) and traction aids (if you have them\, just to be on the safe side).  RRCT also recommends water\, your cell phone and a whistle for safety.  Snow pack looks iffy at best\, but RRCT promises a magical trip up and down Pisgah with the trail lit by lanterns and snow cairns.  Open to all ages/abilities.   Leashed\, well-behaved canines and their conscientious\, waste-clearing owners are welcome.  Further details and registration form can be found at the website listed below.  Do pre-register however\, so RRCT volutneers can plan for adequate refreshments. \nI can be reached at marchills@gmail.com and/or text @ 207-332-8250  If texting\, please identify yourself!

SUMMARY:See the Northern Lights!
DESCRIPTION:Great opportunity this winter to see the aurora borealis! The Van Allen belt is the most active it’s been in 20 years.  Abisko\, Sweden; Yellowknife\, NWT\,Canada ; and Churchill\, Manitoba\, Canada are possibilities\, with odds of about 90% of seeing the lights IF the night is clear (something the ads didn’t always mention).  I plan to go in March. I have been monitoring the weather in several cities\, as well as the level of aurora activity. Get in touch if you’re interested – I’ll make plans depending on how many folks get in touch.  Marianne Hill  hillmarros@aol.com \n

SUMMARY:White Mountain Hike\, TBD
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone… my first MOAC post in many years!  I’m hoping to hike on Saturday despite cloudy weather (and very sorry to conflict with Winterfest)… thinking of either Mts. Pierce and Jackson in Crawford Notch\, or Mt. Chocorua via Champney Falls\, but am open to other suggestions in the 3500-4500′ range.  Would strongly suggest recent winter hiking experience and appropriate winter gear.  Brisk-ish pace; I’m usually about 3/4 book time or a little less.   Please email me if interested… thanks! \nRuby

SUMMARY:Winterfest Outing - Bike via back roads to Babb's Covered Bridge / walk The Mountain Division Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is an outing during “Winter”fest. Looks like we won’t be having a storm before Winterfest\, in lieu of snow shoeing and skiing\, we have a bike trip planned to Babb’s Covered Bridge (2.4 miles away from the farm) so bring a bike! If a group would rather walk a portion of The Mountain Division Trail\, the trail is still icy (proof that\, yes\, we did have winter!). Please bring spikes if you take that route.

SUMMARY:MOAC General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Carlie Casey of Bethel to Present on Nearly 1\,000 Miles of Nordic Skiing in Norway\nIn mid-February 2023\, Carlie Casey and Ann Speth of Bethel\, Maine flew to Norway with the intention of cross-country skiing as far north as possible before the melting snow would put an end to their skiing adventure. Skiing the entire length of Norway had been a dream of Carlie’s after several weeks-long trips in prior years. As it turns out\, starting in the south and skiing in one continuous path northward\, using marked routes connecting Norway’s backcountry huts\, was not as straightforward as maps and websites suggested. \nJoin Carlie as he shares breathtaking slides of the “birthplace” of Nordic skiing\, describes problem-solving on such a trip\, and opens his pack to reveal what they both learned about the gear best suited to hut-to-hut skiing. Carlie will share his experience with the different qualities of Nordic skis and gear. \nCarlie is a credentialed Technical Director (TD) by the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) and the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSSA). He was a long-time West Coast TD before moving back East to join his late wife\, near their hometown. As a FIS TD he has been around the world working ski races and helps the local Chisholm Ski Club at Black Mountain of Maine\, he is also a key cog in the Bethel Trails program. You can find him in the X-C Ski stadium helping with set and design or on the trail making sure the rules are followed in multiple international races held in the U.S. \nNot only an avid Nordic skier\, Carlie has accomplished both long-distance biking and hiking goals\, including the Appalachian Trail more than once. \n\nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.
