SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Sailing the Bark Europa Around Cape Horn
DESCRIPTION:This meeting will be streamed on Zoom.\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/89814026218?pwd=3WaL561ckaq7gf159GgB9CAc9S4cl0.1 \nMeeting ID: 898 1402 6218\nPasscode: 109386\nBob MacKinnon will share his 6\,200 mile sailing trip “Across the South Pacific and around Cape Horn” on the sailing vessel Bark Europa. \nBeginning his journey in Auckland\, New Zealand\, MacKinnon sailed as a working member of the crew for over 50 days\, ending his trip in the Falkland Islands. \nThis voyage around Cape Horn is very rarely done now\, given the notoriously dangerous weather and sea conditions at the “Horn.” \n  \nBob joined MOAC back in 2000. Besides sailing\, Bob also enjoys hiking\, backcountry skiing\, climbing and recently took up competitive running\, which consumes much of his time. He is a veteran of over 25 trips to the Swiss Alps where he dabbles in mountain running\, alpine climbing\, hiking and beer drinking. He has done 13 marathons\, just completing his second Boston Marathon in April 2025. \nCome at 6:30 to socialize and help set up. The meeting starts with trip reports and announcements\, followed by Bob’s talk. \n_________________ \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza). Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:“Granite Rapids Moon” filmed in the Grand Canyon
DESCRIPTION:This 93-minute film will be shown at Space Gallery\, 538 Congress Street\, Portland\, Maine.  Doors open at 6:30; film at 7:00. Description:  A happily married father of two\, shaken by a mysterious message written in a birthday card for his daughter\, abruptly leaves his family for a week-long trek through the Grand Canyon. Granite Rapids Moon starring Brit Morgan\, John Charles Meyer\, Missi Pyle\, Susan Papa\, Etienne Eckert\, Micah Cohen\, and KylieRae Condon.\nCreated with permission and oversight from the National Park Service\, using only the equipment that a cast and crew of eight could carry on two 41-mile hikes (one in 20° December and the other in 95° June)\, this family-friendly romantic drama is the first narrative feature ever to shoot the majority of its footage inside the rim of the Grand Canyon. \nThe film’s producer has offered MOAC a table for handouts and the opportunity to speak in front of the audience.  If you would like to help out\, contact Eileen at 207-749-0211.  A portion of ticket sales will support Portland Trails.\nWatch the trailer here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTR2A3ogJ8U \n

SUMMARY:Camping at Rangeley Lake State Park-Trip is Full
DESCRIPTION:Eileen’s Text: 207-749-0211  MOAC has reserved the East End Group Camping Site at Rangeley Lake State Park (RLSP) for three nights.  There is one larger area for group meals and hanging out with a fire.  Otherwise\, there are separate sites for each member(s).  This set-up allows for both privacy and social time with the group.  The park boasts a swimming beach with a grassy area and steps leading into the water where boats can be launched\, as well as two miles of walking trails.  MAP OF THE CAMPGROUND \nThere are plenty of options for activities at RLSP or elsewhere in the area:  hiking\, walking\, swimming\, boating and mountain biking.  Leaders will need to self-identify.  4k footer peak baggers or AT section hikers have options as well as.  Here are 28 walks and hikes within 20 miles of Rangeley.\nTop hikes in Rangeley area from All Trails\nVisit Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands online for more information and a printable map.\nFEE:  $30 per person for the trip regardless of how many nights.   Since the leader pays the balance upon arrival\, you will need to pay $30 upfront to reserve your space.  Sites will be claimed on a first come\, first serve basis.  Pay by Venmo @Eileen-Whynot.  It is probably too late to mail a check to me. \nFOOD:  As was the case in 2024\, the leader will provide grill-able meats and veggie options.  Otherwise\, the dinners will be potluck\, so plan on bringing food to share\, bring your own (BYO)  beverages\, plate and utensils.  BYO lunch and breakfast food or plan to eat out in Rangeley. SUMMARY:Hike Four Ponds Trail of the AT\, Rangeley\, Maine
DESCRIPTION:Join MOAC campers from the Rangeley Lake State Park trip for this 7.4 mile out and back round trip hike.  From ME-17\, the Appalachian Trail summits Spruce Mountain\, a moderate climb with a few ledges. The trail crosses then traverses through a beautiful lowland spruce-fir forest and along the shore of Moxie Pond. This section can be wet and muddy in spring or after rain events. The trail then rises up and over the steep and rocky Bates Ledge before heading downward again toward Long and Sabbathday Ponds. Both ponds offer beautiful views and swimming opportunities. The trail reaches Sabbathday Pond\, where a shelter is used primarily for thru and section hikers.  This is not a casual hike at seven miles.  Sturdy trail boots will be necessary and a lunch\, energy snacks and water as well as rain gear are advised.  Bring bathing suit to cool off.  https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/appalachian-trail-four-ponds\nMeet at the trailhead or at the state park.  Text Eileen at 207-749-0211

SUMMARY:Mt. Blue State Park Group Camping Extravaganza
DESCRIPTION:Stunning Mount Blue State Park at the foot of the Tumbledown Mountain Region in beautiful Weld Maine is the site of your best summer adventure!  We have secured the north shelter\, which is right on the water with a beautiful sunny beach and an adirondack shelter should the weather be too fussy. \nYou will need to canoe in to the site or walk your things down a craggy\, rooty path to the site.  Maybe a quarter of a mile… I much prefer to canoe in.  Faster\, less exhausting.   While you are free\, of course\, to do as you please each day\, here are some of my favorite things to do when I am at Mt. Blue: hike Bald and /or Tumbledown; rent a canoe or rowboat or kayak (all dirt cheap) and make my way across the lake to have a beer or a bite at the historic Kawanhee Inn and sing all the way back; if it was hot on the way over\, we may need to stop at the big rock and jump off a few times to cool off; many Saturday evenings see programming at the ampitheatre just up the hill from our sexy forested lakeside spot; if it’s too hot to hike\, we can spend the day swimming or strumming ukulele by the water hoping for a cool breeze or go to the Swift River to pan for gold or jump off the cliffs of Coos Canyon; if it’s really hot we’ll pop over to Farmington and spend the day tubing down the Sandy River; at night I hope there will be music and song or other shenanigans; maybe sardines after dark or a cribbage competition; and I really should caution you that you won’t want to miss the inaugural MOAC Mt. Blue Belly Flop Competition off the great rock that juts out in the middle of the lake (Prizes tba).  Oh do come\, it’ll be just like summer camp. \nCost is a steal at $16.50 per person for the whole trip. \nYou may come one\, two\, or three nights. \nIf we have at least 7 peeps each night\, I’ll only charge you by the night\, otherwise\, it’s a flat fee of $16.50 so that I don’t eat the bill.  Hope this sounds fair.  Not trying to  make money; just trying not to lose too much. \nSign up for this trip by filling out the google form included below (it is a live document\, so only edit your own information and feel free to message me privately if you don’t want your info shared and know that we are all agreeing to only use this information on this sheet for the express purpose of communicating about this one event and should not be used for any other reason in the future) and venmo me (@Tess-Murphy-9) your payment or call me to make alternate arrangements (207-518-3320). \nHope to see you there. \nIf we do not meet the minimum by July 28\, I will cancel event so that we do not violate the conditions of the agreement with the park that we will have a minimum of 7 people on site each night.  I am happy\, in that case\, to spend time camping with you in the family campground\, should that be the case.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting: The Story – Maine Huts & Trails
DESCRIPTION:Our Next Monthly Meeting:  Wed Sept. 3rd \nPresentation:  The Story – Maine Huts & Trails\nPresented By:  Wolfe Tone – Maine Huts & Trails Executive Director \nThe Story:  Maine Huts & Trails\nThe Maine Huts & Trails (MH&T) experience is more than a backcountry adventure—it’s a journey through nature that invites connection\, discovery\, and belonging. Along over 80 miles of free\, year-round trails\, guests hike\, ski\, or bike from hut to hut\, immersed in the beauty of Maine’s wilderness. Inside the huts\, the warmth of a woodstove\, shared meals\, and laughter among strangers-turned-friends create moments of genuine camaraderie. Not long ago\, MH&T was confronted by operational challenges made even steeper by the pandemic. From uncertainty emerged something powerful: a fully committed board\, hardworking staff\, and our dedicated community rallied together to reimagine MH&T’s future. \n6:30PM Social;   7:00PM  Program Start\nA2U2 Church\, 524 Allen Ave.\, Portland

SUMMARY:Weather dependent hike to Mt. Kineo\, Rockwood\, ME Sunday September 7
DESCRIPTION:Plan to meet at the Rockwood ferry shuttle at 10:00 to boat over to Mt. Kineo State Park.  Cost is $15.00 CASH per person paid directly to the captain of the shuttle and $5.00 CASH for the State Park entry fee.  Park fee is variable depending on age and residency.  The Rockwood Public Landing is a 45 minute drive from Lily Bay State Park.  I will be leaving Lily Bay State Park Group Site at 9:00.  Car pooling is suggested. \nWe have several options of hikes.  I would like to do the 4-5 hour moderate hike up Indian Cliff Trail and down the North Trail.  There is also the Bridal Path Trail which is easier but does not have the same views.  For a flatter trail option there is the carriage road out to Hardscrabble Point or the trail to Pebble Beach which is on the North side of the island. \nBring good hiking shoes\, poles\, water\, lunch\, snacks\, and CASH. \nThe shuttle leaves Rockwood Public Landing to Kineo on the hour every hour from 9:00 to 4:00.  The shuttle returns from Kineo 10:45\, 11:45\, 12:45\, 1:45\, 2:45\, 3:45 and last trip is 4:45.  I am hoping we will make the 3:45 ferry after the 4 to 5 hour hike\, but if it takes longer we will catch the 4:45. \nAs stated in the event title\, this could be a weather dependent hike. \nText me at 617-694-8543 if interested. \n

SUMMARY:Hike Libby Hill in Gray and joyful hour
DESCRIPTION:It will be cooler (supposedly) on Saturday so please join me for a hike on the Libby Hill Forest trails in Gray.  They’re near the schools across from Hannaford\, off Route 26.   I plan on a hike of about an hour and a half.  There are a variety of trails with various difficulty and we’ll see which ones the group wants to do.  Mostly conversational pace\, but we’ll keep moving.  We can split the group if some want or need a slower pace or shorter\, easier trail.  It’s been a while since I’ve been there\, but the trails were generally well marked. \nYou can see the trails here:  https://libbyhill.org/trail-maps/ \nFor those willing and able we’ll head to camp (about 10 minutes away) to eat\, drink and be merry.  The happy hour committee doesn’t like others to use the term happy hour on so as not to confuse things with the “official” club happy hour.  🙂  I will probably not do the grill\, but will bring a sandwich or something.  BYO your own food and drinks.  Folks are welcome to just come to camp later if they don’t want to do the hike.  I expect to be there by 4:30-ish. \nPlan to arrive so we can be on the trail at 2:30. \nShow and go.  No dogs please.  And no ferrets.  You can text 207.807.2729 with questions
