SUMMARY:HIKE WOLFE'S NECK STATE PARK - FREEPORT\, MAINE
DESCRIPTION:We will be hiking trails in the woods and along the wooded Casco Bay shoreline throughout Wolfe’s Neck State Park. If approaching from the center of Freeport\, take Flying Point Road and watch for the directional signs for the park. The signs will eventually indicate a right hand turn on to Wolfe’s Neck Road.  Watch for additional signage and there will eventually be a sign indicating a left hand turn on to the State Park access road. After passing the entrance booth\, bear right into the parking lot that is directly ahead. We will meet at this parking lot and step off at 11 AM. Bring cleats\, hiking poles\, backpacks for lunches\, etc. and sufficient layered clothing as we will be in the woods much of the time but after hiking a while it may start to warm up a bit. We will be hiking two different loops and take a lunch break at the group picnic shelter between the loops. Any questions prior to the day of the hike\, mcb-12nam@outlook.com or 207-844-8142 (this is a land line). The morning of the hike 802-770-9106. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Machu Picchu
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the Sacred Valley of Peru (Urubamba)\, where the Incas built temples to the sun and other deities. \nMachu Picchu is the most famous of the archaeological sites\, built by the Inca but there are many more. The stonework was tightly fitted together\, using no visible mortar. \nWe will visit many important sites to the Inca culture\, culminating with Machu Picchu. We will touch on modern day Peru as well\, with its rich cultural history of blended indigenous\, Spanish\, and religious customs. \n  \n\nMarty Williams lives in Ellsworth and currently is club president. If you live in Northern Maine\, the Bangor area\, or Downeast\, look for her outdoor adventures throughout the year in that part of the state. She can be reached at president@moac.org or bangor_area@moac.org. \nA member for more than 15 years\, this trip to Peru in 2016 was a MOAC trip. Just an example of where this club can take you. \n___________________________________________\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \nZOOM!! \nMOAC Event is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Feb 1 General Meeting\nTime: Feb 1\, 2023 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87675915489?pwd=UzdmcmJGN3dvd2dlUTlhTlVhTm5vQT09 \nMeeting ID: 876 7591 5489\nPasscode: 499491\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,87675915489#\,\,\,\,*499491# US (Chicago)\n+16468769923\,\,87675915489#\,\,\,\,*499491# US (New York) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Casting Call for a Commercial
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to be in an advertisement?  The board received this request from AHC Casting.  They are going to do an advertisement for T Mobile.  So\, if you’re a T Mobile customer and live in the Augusta area\, read on.  In particular\, they would like to find a family who is active\, outdoorsy\, likes winter activities\, etc\, and ….who uses T Mobile. \nI’m reaching out with an unusual inquiry. My office is casting a T Mobile commercial that is going to be shooting in Augusta\, ME in late February. We are seeking LOCAL families (who currently live in/near Augusta or the surrounding cities – Vassalboro\, Benton\, Oakland\, China\, Norridgewock\, Waterville) who are also real T Mobile customers who might want to be considered for the project. It’s going to be a fun\, one-day shoot for $1200/ person. If production decides to film talent in their home they’ll earn an additional $300.  \nWe would like to find a family who is active\, outdoorsy\, likes winter activities\, etc\, and ….who uses T Mobile. \nWe are holding zoom interviews on Monday and Tuesday (January 30 & 31) and anyone who wants to be considered can email at this address directly. lindsay@alysonhorncasting.com  \nI am available to speak more about this project if you have questions and please feel free to check out our Instag. ram page as it has a lot of our current work: https://www.instagram.com/ahccasting.  The website is: https://www.ahccasting.com/.

SUMMARY:Hedgehog Mountain hike/snowshoe
DESCRIPTION:Had a change of plan last Sunday\, so I’ll try this again.  More snow is on the way\, so let’s get out.  Let’s hike Hedgehog Mountain\, off the Kancamagus Highway.  It’s about a 5 mile loop with 1400 feet elevation gain.   9-14 inches of snow is predicted for Wednesday\, into Thursday\, so we may need snowshoes.  We’ll at least need microspikes.  Also layers and all other winter gear.  Experience level: Intermediate.  Email me to sign up and for details\, including carpooling information.  Let me know your winter hiking experience.  Here’s a link to the AllTrails description of this hike. \n

SUMMARY:HIKE MORSE MOUNTAIN & SEAWALL BEACH - PHIPPSBURG
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a peaceful hike through the conifers along a woods road through the Bates – Morse Mountain Preserve that ends at the expansive and picturesque Seawall Beach and return.  We will meet at the Bates – Morse Mountain parking lot and step off at 11 AM and return to the parking lot around 2 PM.  As there are areas along the road with moderate grades\, plan on bringing cleats given recent weather events. For those that wish\, bring a light lunch to enjoy at the beach. As we will be on the beach during the ebb tide\, there should be a generously wide berth and somewhat firm footing available for hiking. Although temps are predicted to be in the low 40’s the day of the hike\, be prepared in the event of off-shore winds. Take Maine Route 209 through Phippsburg to the point where the road continues straight on to Maine Route 216.  GO STRAIGHT ON TO MAINE ROUTE 216 at this point. Approximately 0.8 miles down 216\, look for a road sign on the left for Morse Mountain. The parking lot will be about 500 feet up that road on the left. For cell phone contact on the day of the hike\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that\, 207-844-8142 or mcb-12nam@outlook.com.  Be aware that cell phone service in that area can be spotty. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:November 2023 Tanzania Wildlife Safari Update
DESCRIPTION:Great to see everyone at the monthly meeting\, and I hope you enjoyed the presentation on African Safari Adventure! \nThere were questions about other activities and hiking for the November 2023 trip I have posted. This is a wildlife safari\, which is why it is listed as “other” for category of adventure. That said\, there are a wide variety of activities that may be scheduled by our guide at the lodges\, and that are listed\, such as a flora and fauna walk\, a visit to a Maasai Village\, or a visit to the Cultural Center in Arusha\, which is amazing! Our Guide can also arrange a day hike of Kilimanjaro for those who wish to add a day to their itinerary before or after the Safari. Some wildlife parks permit walking safari days as well! \nThis is a once in a lifetime outdoor\, wilderness adventure\, and space is limited! I have updated my notes on the posting. Please note\, the cost of 4950.00 cannot be quantified without the full itinerary\, so you may see what is included. There will be an internal flight as part of the journey\, similar to those in my presentation. Please contact me for the complete itinerary and list of optional activities available. Thanks! \nUpdated Notes: “Join me for an experience and adventure of a lifetime in November 2023 with Herbivore Expeditions! Please note\, this is a wildlife safari journey\, and as such\, this will be an extra-ordinary wildlife viewing adventure. The Serengeti is known as the land of the lions\, and therefore all visitors must follow their guide’s instructions. For those who wish to go hiking in Africa\, please see additional options below\, and contact me for a guided itinerary with Herbivore Expeditions to climb Mt Kilimanjaro\, or for a day hike on Kilimanjaro. Thank you!”

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Africa
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Gina Garey tells us about an extraordinary\, life altering experience in East Africa\, including time in Tanzania and Kenya. \nWe visited several national parks\, conservancies and refuges\, the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the the Wildlife Orphanage located adjacent to the Mt. Kenya Safari Club\, to name a few highlights of the journey. \nThe cultural exchange opportunities and wildlife viewing at a Unesco World Heritage site were unparalleled\, as we had the privilege of coming up close and personal with a wide variety of newborn species\, and of course\, the big five. \nOur wildlife guides were the “best on the ground” offering their insights and expertise as they knew exactly where and how to find the more extraordinary experiences for us all. With over 1\,000 photographs and dozens of videos\, it will be a challenge to condense such a special adventure in the bush\, but I’ll do my best! \n  \n___________________________________________\nGina has a Master’s Degree in Animal Behavior\, and operates a private practice here in Maine. She is an avid downhill and cross country skier. She is looking forward to getting back out on the slopes this winter with all you MOAC skiers\, following a number of health setbacks in recent years that are finally in the rearview mirror! Gina looks forward to some winter fun with you all! \nShe also serves as the State Director in Maine for Animal Wellness Action\, and the Center for a Humane Economy. \n

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Yellowstone in Winter
DESCRIPTION:MOAC member (and board member) Marianne Hill will share slides and stories from her December 23- 28\, 2015  trip to Yellowstone.  Yellowstone has an eerie beauty in the winter as steam from hot springs dots or even shrouds the landscape.  Animals are easy to spot against the snow\, which averages over 13 feet deep near Yellowstone Lake.  Marianne visited Mammoth Hot Springs\, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone; Yellowstone Lake; West Thumb geyser basin and more. Also\, there are some fascinating scientific discoveries associated with the park.  If you have visited Yellowstone in the winter\, please come and share your experience. \nWe may try to record using Zoom. \nMOAC Event is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: General Meeting\nTime: Dec 7\, 2022 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86463290859?pwd=T1BRTWIrRWxmKzdjUUVlV3pRc0gzZz09 \nMeeting ID: 864 6329 0859\nPasscode: 366266 \n

SUMMARY:WALK POPHAM BEACH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an approximately two & one-half hour walk along the beach from Popham Beach State Park to Fort Popham and return on Tuesday December 6th.  Although a chance of showers is predicted for that day\, it appears from the forecast this may be one of the last 50 + degree days for a while to take advantage of.  For those that wish\, pack a light lunch to enjoy in the vicinity of Fort Popham prior to the return leg of the walk. We will step off at 12 noon sharp from the Popham Beach State Park parking lot. As high tide will have been around 10 AM\, the entire walk should be during ebb tide ensuring a wide berth and decent walking conditions.  Getting there is straight forward as one can take Maine – 209 in Phippsburg right to Popham Beach State Park with adequate signage along Maine -209 directing visitors to the Park. We will meet in the center of the parking lot directly ahead of the entry shack. For any questions on the day of the walk\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that time\, 207-844-8142 or via mcb-12nam@outlook.com. Please note\, cell service in that area can be spotty. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Holiday Lights Stroll
DESCRIPTION:Join me for the traditional Holiday lights stroll through downtown Portland!  We’ll meet at the intersection of Commercial and India St at 6pm (I’m not sure how easy it is to find parking these days). We ‘ll walk for about 90 minutes to try and see as many light displays as we can. ‘Tis the Season! And I’m sure there will be other strolls posted later in the December.

SUMMARY:Hike Tuckermans Ravine
DESCRIPTION:Climb up to Lunch Rocks at Tuckerman’s Ravine\, about 6 miles round trip and 2700′ elevation gain. There may be skiers to watch\, although I’m guessing they’ll mostly be doing the Sherburne trail rather than the ravine. Expect winter conditions – micro spikes are required and snowshoes may be helpful. It will be windy and cold so also bring warm layers\, extra gloves\, a hot drink\, lunch\, water and snacks. RSVP by phone or text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times and carpool info (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We’ll probably stop somewhere afterwards for refreshments. SUMMARY:Climb Carter Dome
DESCRIPTION:Climb Carter Dome by way of Mt. Hight and 19 Mile Brook Trail. This is a challenging hike in winter conditions – 10.2 miles round trip\, 3\,500′ elevation gain. Wind chills will be around zero at the summits – be prepared with plenty of extra layers\, a warm hat\, spare gloves for when your first ones are sweaty and damp\, a hot drink\, and microspikes. Snowshoes may also be a good idea\, although I assume the trail will be well packed by Sunday. This week will bring the first snow and ice to the White Mountains\, so there could be 6″ or more on the trail. Bring lunch\, snacks and water in a winter-proof container as well. Also be sure you have a headlamp in your pack\, as it may be getting dark on the way down; also\, bring something blaze orange as Sunday hiking is allowed in New Hampshire. There are fantastic views from Mt. Hight – two of the photos on this website were taken there. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only. Call\, text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not starting at 2AM) and carpool information. I’m watching Sunday’s weather and if the chance for snow increases this may be re-scheduled for Saturday.

SUMMARY:HIKE MORSE MOUNTAIN & SEAWALL BEACH
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us for a steady but peaceful 6.4 KM (3.8 mile) out & back hike through the Bates – Morse Mountain Conservation Area off Small Point Road (ME – 216) in Phippsburg. Prior to the return leg of the hike\, we will be able to take in the beauty of the incredibly expansive and unspoiled Seawall Beach as it looks out on open ocean and Popham Beach State Park to the East. For those that wish\, pack in a lunch to enjoy prior to hiking back to the parking lot. The terrain out and back is an established woods road\, parts of which appear to have been paved at one time. There are some sections that are moderately steep. Take Maine – 209 through Phippsburg to the point where you go straight onto Maine – 216 (Small Point Road) (Maine – 209 goes off sharply to the left at this point) for approximately 0.8 miles and look for Morse Mountain Road on the left. Proceed up that road for approximately 500 feet or so to the trail parking lot. Barring anything unusual\, the objective will be to hit trail at 10 AM sharp and be back to the parking lot by 1 PM. If there are any questions that morning\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that\, 207-844-8142. Caution\, cell service can be spotty in that area.

SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:For 31 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nBack for 2022\, however\, is the free lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it’s back. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider. At least that’s what it used to be. Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Travel in Burma!
DESCRIPTION:Visit the fascinating country of Burma (Myanmar) with Jean Armstrong.\n\nJean\, a long-time MOAC member\, waited to travel independently to Burma (Myanmar) until 2011 when it was possible without going via a government restricted tour. Here\, she experienced 3 World Heritage Sites. Shimmering\, gleaming Schwedagon\, 6 acres of temples and stupas in Yangon was spectacular as was the vibrant tea house street culture.\n\nShe visited Inle Lake\, a trekking area with many colorful ethnic minority groups\, packs of dogs and frequent brownouts. Inle lake has stilt villages built in the middle of the lake\, and active farming and fishing done on the lake berms. She was able to bicycle and wander into countless payas and stupas in search of frescos in Old Bagan\, where there are 6000 temples built between the 11th and 13th century. Armstrong spent time in the city of Mandalay which has gravel streets and 1 trishaw\, or motorcycle taxi for every 3 people there.\n\nShe took trucks to U Bein Bridge\, the tallest Teak pedestrian bridge spanning 3/4 of a mile and Sagaing\, where 600 white temples are set in the mountains along a river with hilly enclosed staircases running from 1 temple to another. The highlight of her trip was being the only Westerner in a military town and finding an ex Shan State videographer for a guide. They rode into Shan State on degraded roads on his motorcycle and stayed in Palaung village homes. She was overwhelmed with the desire of the Burmese and the minority groups to connect with her and share stories about their experiences of living in an oppressed country where time stood still for 50 years.\n\nWhile it is still possible to obtain a 28 day VISA to visit a few select restricted areas of Burma\, The US State Dept. strongly recommends against it due to safety issues which have increased since the 2021 coup.\n\nArmstrong is a long time MOAC member since the first year of the club and has enjoyed participating and leading a number of sports of any season.\n\n___________________________________________ \nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. \nWhile we would love to see you in person\, here is a zoom link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85487590664?pwd=YjM3bG1xbnl5MEM5STNmUGJNSEVyQT09 \nMeeting ID: 854 8759 0664\nPasscode: 362996 \n

SUMMARY:Hike Thayer Brook Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This is a no hunting game preserve that is part of the Royal River Land Trust.  In spite of that you\, may want to wear blaze orange. Meet at 10 AM at the trailhead — 92 Ramsdell Rd. in Gray. If you are driving in from 202\, it’s on the right just after Bud’ Lane and you will see a blue sign with white lettering for Thayer Brook Preserve. \nBring a snack or lunch and water. Poles are optional but I found them to be helpful on some of the trails. It’s about a 4-mile hike with ups and downs but no significant elevation. There are several large puddles that can be walked around. The trail goes around a marsh and through the woods. \nThis trip is weather dependent. \nThere are about 8 – 10 parking spots. Let me know if you are interested in carpooling. \nPlease contact me if you plan to go so I contact you in case of cancellation. betsy.hanscom@gmail.com 207-754-9692 call or text

SUMMARY:Sunday Oct 30 Hike South Moat Mountain in Conway NH
DESCRIPTION:Weather looks good for this 5.8 mile 2132′ climb up South Moat Mt in Conway NH.  High of 65 forecasted for Conway but temps will most likely be low to mid 50s at the top.  Regardless\, many layers including warm layers and good hiking boots are a must.  Bring water\, food\, first aid kit\, camera.  Poles recommended for descending – especially if your knees frequently talk to you. \nEstimated hike start is 10am with a finish by approximately 3pm – this includes stops and lunch at the top.   Stopping for beverages/food on the way home is an option as well. \nThis will be a slow paced hike (1) because I am slow (2) because I have not hiked much this past summer and (3) I have not done this hike before.  However\, this is not a beginner hike – more like intermediate/advanced. \nCarpooling encouraged and we will meet at the Hannaford in Standish – please be vaccinated due to carpooling. \nLimit 8 people.  Please text or call Elaine at 207-650-7417 by Saturday 9pm to reserve your spot and get the final meeting times. \nAllTrails link to the trail map and description: \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/new-hampshire/south-moat-mountain-trail

SUMMARY:Hike Morse Mountain & Seawall Beach
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us for a steady but peaceful 6.4 KM (3.8 mile) out & back hike through the Bates – Morse Mountain Conservation Area off Small Point Road (ME-216) in Phippsburg. Please note that we will be proceeding rain or shine barring a sustained deluge. The terrain out and back is an established woods road\, parts of which appear to have been paved at one time. There are some sections that are moderately steep.  Take Maine – 209 through Phippsburg to the point where you go straight through onto Maine 216 (Small Point Road) (Maine – 209 goes off sharply to the left at this point). Proceed on Maine – 216 for approximately 0.8 miles and look for the Morse Mountain Road sign on the left. Proceed up that road for approximately 500 feet or so to the trail parking lot. Barring anything unusual\, the objective will be to get back to the parking lot no later than 1 PM.  If there are any questions that morning\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that 207-844-8142.  Caution\, cell service can be spotty in that area. Please note:  We will hit the trail at 10 AM sharp in order to help ensure we are back by 1 PM.
