SUMMARY:Music and Fun@Conant Farm
DESCRIPTION:When you come tomorrow\, Sat July 15th\, let me encourage all that would like to come early and take a dip in the River to do so. It is directly behind the Homestead along Portland Trails Conant Trail.\nAlso\, we will be grilling GraKakes for the concert. They will be by donation. If you have not had them before they are artisanal vegan burgers. (They wheat free\, non-processed\, no oils\, and hand pressed and baked on the Conant homestead.) They are very good!\nAND there may be the opportunity to walk some young goats. A delight for kids of all species.\n\nSee you Saturday I hope…\n\nMichael and Malory Shaughnessy

SUMMARY:Camp Day in Gray on Little Sebago
DESCRIPTION:We had so much fun at Jean’s yesterday\, I decided to post for a day at camp at my place in Gray.  Especially since there are (at least for now) no warnings of thunderstorms!  I’ll be there by 2:00\, come any time after that and swim\, paddle\, eat\, or nap in the hammock.  Stay for a couple of hours or for the duration.   🙂   I’m not planning a particular time for a group paddle\, but people can go out whenever.  I have a few sit-on-top kayaks and paddle boards or you can bring your own boat.  Or stay on shore and relax.  Fun hour (so as not to confuse it with MOAC happy hour) around 5:00 and we’ll light the grill around 5:30 ish for BBQ. \nAs usual – BYO drinks\, snacks and protein for the grill and a dish to share for dinner if you stay.  I’ll provide charcoal and have most condiments\, as well as paper plates\, etc.  But if you bring your own reusables\, the planet will thank you. \nShow and go if you decide to come last minute\, but I do appreciate a heads up so I have an idea of how many to expect.  lmitchell75@aol.com \n255 Westwood Rd in Gray.  If you have a boat you can drive down to unload\, park in the space by the road behind the camp. \n

SUMMARY:Summerfest Hike
DESCRIPTION:An easy hike on Mt. Apatite\, in Auburn.  Depending on the trails we take\, this should be about 3 miles and 300 feet elevation gain.  It’s only about 15 minutes from Range Pond\, but we’ll probably want to carpool.  I’m posting it for 2:00\, figuring that would give us time to eat lunch.  Then\, when we come back\, there will be time to go for a swim and eat more food!

DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt Carrigain\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers – a rugged hike of 10.6 miles round trip and 3\,500′ elevation gain. Be prepared to cross a stream that may require taking boots off\, although recent trail reports are saying it’s rock hop-able. The weather looks great on Sunday – I’ve climbed this one twice with no views\, so I’m looking forward to finally getting what some people consider the best views in the Whites. \nBring lunch\, at least 2 liters of water – preferably 3\, and a warm hat and layers for the top in case of wind. RSVP for meeting places and times and to carpool – we’re not leaving at 2 AM. Fully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me at 207-380-6008 to discuss your experience. We may stop for refreshments after the hike.

SUMMARY:Lily Bay State Park Camping Trip
DESCRIPTION:The group site at Lily Bay State Park is called Mud Brook. It is also called the most sought-after group site reservation in the Maine State Park system. Mud Brook is located on the east shore of Moosehead Lake (the largest lake in Maine)\, approximately eight miles out of Greenville. And MOAC has it for three nights: August 11-14. It is a three hour drive from Portland. \nThe group site has water on three sides and can host 40+ campers. There is an Adirondack Shelter\, and an outhouse. We also have access to the main campground’s flush toilets and free hot showers but it is a 2-mile drive to those facilities. \nActivities include hiking\, camping\, wildlife watching\, photography\, canoeing\, and kayaking (bring your own boats). Let’s not forget reading\, contemplating one’s naval\, and deep conversation. We will be looking for people to volunteer to lead activities. \nThe cost is $30 per person whether you stay the whole weekend or not.  We will provide breakfast on Sunday morning (details on that as we get closer). The rest of the time you are on your own for food. Contributions to share will always be accepted for social hours. Payment through Venmo (Tammy-Mullen-5) or by check will secure your spot.  This is non-refundable but you can transfer your space to a MOAC friend. \nPlease RSVP to pcm25me@gmail.com. \nIf Venmo poses a security question\, the answer is 0047. \nChecks to Peter Mullen\, 38 Lawrence Rd\, Gray\, Maine\, 04039. \n

SUMMARY:Hot Air Ballooning in Auburn\, Almost FULL\,
DESCRIPTION:Great Falls Balloon Festival. I will be flying in Lewiston/Auburn August 17\, 18\, 18\, 20. Flight times are 6 am and 6pm each day\, weather permitting. The Friday and Saturday night flights (the most popular) are full with people who have helped with ballooning. However\, there is plenty of space on the morning flights. The whole event\, setting up the balloon\, flying\, folding up\, getting back to the starting field\, takes 3-4 hours. If you are interested in crewing or flying\, please contact me and we can go over the details. NOTE\, I fly an EXPERIMENTAL balloon\, that means I built it myself\, the FAA will only certify the balloon exists\, not that the balloon is safe. If you want to be added to the WAIT LIST\, please contact me.

SUMMARY:MOAC Trail Maintenance Day
DESCRIPTION:As we all know\, it’s been a pretty rainy spring and summer so far.  Oh sure\, there’s been a few good days here and there. But\, right now\, I’m stuck inside as the current deluge has formed a moat around the house.  I’m trapped!   And if that’s the case here\, I’m sure the conditions on our adopted trails on Pleasant Mountain aren’t much better.  So\, what’s say we all rally together on Saturday the 26th and give a little TLC to the Bald Peak and Sue’s Way trails.  Cleaning all the waterbars and addressing any new erosion problems will be our focus.  No experience necessary – we’ll take anybody!  😉  MOAC will provide all the trail tools.  You just need sturdy footwear\, work gloves\, water\, lunch\, clothes and outerwear appropriate for the day\, and a day pack to carry it all.  And probably some insect repellant to keep the ticks and late season bugs at bay.   If all goes well\, we will have lunch at the top\, and work our way back down.  We start at 9am\, meeting at the Bald Peak parking lot on Mountain Road\, Bridgton.  Mountain Road is off Route 302 and is the same road you take to get to the ski area.  The trailhead is about a mile past the ski area on the right.  We usually call it quits around 3 or 4 pm.  After which we might go for a swim in the lake\, or head directly to happy hour.  Please let me know if you plan to join us so I can get a head count and plan the work for the day.  If you have any questions\, just give me a shout at trails@MOAC.org . \nDana the Maintain-ah!

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Presumpsot River \nJoin us as we welcome a close neighbor and kindred souls as the Friends of the Presumpscot River (FOPR) visit us to share their story\, their mission\, and their dreams. \nThe Presumpscot River is a major part of our world\, providing scenic paddling\, plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking\, and more than its share of history. The river leaves Sebago Lake in Windham\, and after reaching Westbrook\, meanders around Portland and finds the sea in Falmouth. \nThe Presumpscot holds many treasures. From solitude walking its banks\, or paddling various sections\, as well as its importance in history. The towpath as part of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal\, the covered bridge in south Windham (one of only nine remaining in Maine)\, and the The Oriental Powder Company which built its plant at Gambo Falls and supplied nearly a quarter of the ammunition used by the Union Forces in the Civil War. \nFOPR formed in 1992 as a neighborhood group dedicated to defending the Presumpscot River from further industrialization\, its mission statement is to protect and improve the water quality\, indigenous fisheries\, recreational opportunities and natural character of the Presumpscot River. \n \n\n\n\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \n\n

SUMMARY:Funky dance party at One Longfellow Square
DESCRIPTION:On Friday there will be a Funk dance party at OLS. Some chairs will be removed to create a dance space. The space has hardwood floors so it should be a great place to dance.  I copied the paragraph below from the OLS website. Tickets are $20. I have found that tickets are always available for shows even at the last minute. \nFunkationland is a Portland based group of 12 of the best musicians in Maine.  Playing music of groups such as Tower of Power\, Earth Wind and Fire\, Steely Dan\, Stevie Wonder and many more\, Funkationland bring this style of music to Portland for one night only.  The group boasts 6 horns (2 trumpets\, trombone\, Alto\, tenor and Bari Sax)\, 6 rhythms players (2 guitarists\, Keyboards\, Bass\, Drums and Latin Percussion) as well as loads of vocals which will literally “fill up One Longfellow Square” with horn based funk music. \n

DESCRIPTION:Join me for a loop walk around Peaks Island to enjoy the ocean views\, the charming neighborhoods and do a short exploration of Battery Steele (which is now home to colorful graffiti). The walk is about 4 miles\, mostly flat. We’ll take the 10:15 ferry from Portland which costs $7.70. Make sure to leave enough time to find parking (I usually park on Munjoy Hill and walk down to the ferry terminal). Bring layers\, water and some lunch. SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Africa
DESCRIPTION:We’ll be presenting the travelogue “Wild Africa”\, by Bill Yeo\, from L.L. Bean.  This is a half-hour film we showed two years ago\, when all of our meetings were only on Zoom.  We thought it was worth watching again.  According to the film’s description\, it takes “an up-close look at some of Africa’s most amazing animals\, including the first steps of a new-born Wildebeest\, tree climbing lions and the hilarious and remarkable courting dance of the saddle-billed stork”.\n\nAlso\, MOAC President Marty Williams became the cook on the recent Allagash canoe trip. She will talk briefly about food management on a multi-day event without refrigeration.\n\n\nIn addition to the featured presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. \n\n
