DESCRIPTION:March 1\, 2023 General Meeting\nFinding Hope in the Face of Climate Change\n \nWe are seeing the effects of climate change all around us—especially when we are enjoying the outdoors. She holds a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic\, and an MBA from the University of New Hampshire. She has taught advocacy skills at Colby\, Bates and Colorado Colleges. Her recent book is Advocating for the Environment\, How to Gather Your Power and Take Action. \n\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \nZoom starts at 6:45. SUMMARY:***Time change*** Cross Country Ski at Carter’s in Bethel
DESCRIPTION:***Meeting time updated to 11 AM because of the low temps this morning.***Let’s get out in the fluffy new snow! This is a “show and go” event. Please meet at the fire pit at 11 AM with your skis on\, your ticket and whatever supplies you like for a couple hours’ xc skiing. If you need to rent gear\, arrive 30-45 minutes early to get geared up. I plan to ski the mountain side trails across the road from the main lodge\, which are more advanced. There are stunningly beautiful beginner trails starting right from the lodge and going through the fields and along the river\, if you prefer. We’ll ski for a couple hours\, warm up and have something to eat\, then go out for more. Gotta make up for lost ski time this season! 🙂 There’s a food truck on site or you can bring your own food. We can decide if we want to stop afterwards for refreshments as a group. RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email if you have any questions or want to carpool\, or just want to let me know you’re coming. If anything comes up that prevents me from going\, I will post the update here\, and let folks know who RSVP’d. Just check the MOAC page before you head out Sunday morning if you haven’t been in touch with me.

DESCRIPTION:With Thursday’s storm and cool weather to follow\, conditions on Saturday should be terrific at the former Carter’s XC Center\, now owned by Oxbow Brewing.  If you’ve never been\, you’re in for a treat.  All trail fees have been waived\, but Oxbow will happily take your money in exchange for various libations – hard/soft\, hot/cold\, brick oven pizza and wood for the firepits in their outdoor beer garden. \nThis show and go event will be very low key\, as your trip leader is still figuring out how to remain upright on skis with two new knees.  We’ll divide into at least two groups\, those on snowshoes and those on skis.  More ambitious skiers may wish to break off and tackle some of the longer trails.  But let’s plan on meeting mid-outing at Oxbow’s fabulous back woods hut\, where we can warm ourselves by a fire and perhaps partake of a fortifying beverage.  Then we’ll leisurely make our way back to the beer garden and enjoy pizza and beverages\, either indoors or outside by a roaring fire. \nEvent start time is 12:00 noon\, when Oxbow first opens.  We won’t actually hit the trails until 12:15.  Parking lot is expected to already be full so you may end up parking out on Rte. 26.  Let’s congregate where the parking lot funnels into the beginning of the ski trail system.  If you arrive late\, snap a pic of the trail map and head for the back woods hut! \nOxbow Brewing – 420 Main St (Rte 26)\, Oxford\, ME – about one mile past Oxford Casino\, on your left if heading north.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to climb Mt Isolation because there are two bushwhacks that cut a couple of miles off this very long hike. It’s one of the most remote 4000ers (true to its name) and has absolutely stunning views from the summit. We’ll go up the Rocky Branch trail and bushwhacks\, for a total of about 12 miles and 3\,150′ elevation gain – a challenging trip for experienced winter hikers only. Microspikes and snowshoes are both required\, and you should also bring lunch\, snacks and at least 2 liters of water for a long day on the trail. It will probably take 7 – 8 hours total. Wind chills will be near zero at the top\, so also bring extra warm layers and a second set of gloves. RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM)\, and for carpool information. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please send me a pic of your vax card and let me know your winter hiking experience when you RSVP. Max group size is 8\, and we will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Intro to winter in the White Mountains.
DESCRIPTION:Since this outing was broadly successful last year\, we’re trying our hand at a sequel. \nShort version: \nIntroduction to White Mountain winter hiking. Sunday\, February 19th\, Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, Mt. Washington. Bring microspikes\, water\, snacks\, and layers. We will hike to Gem Pool\, which is an easy walk in the woods. I am not expecting to go past Gem Pool. All experience levels welcome. \nGroup limit is 10. To sign up\, and for meeting time and place\, email me: jamie.jbemit08 at gmail. Do not use the sign up button on the MOAC website. \nLong version: \nWHAT: back when I was young\, around the time of the Battle of Jutland\, we had this thing called winter. Temperatures would drop below the freezing point of water for days at a time. This white stuff called snow would fall\, as opposed to rain. Well\, those were the good old days. Now it’s 50 degrees in January. But we can still pretend. \nWinter in the White Mountains is (or was\, before New England winters started looking like Florida) a stunning experience; this hike will be geared toward folks who would like a gentle introduction to winter hiking in the Whites. We will be walking on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, which departs a bit below the Cog Railway. I will check road and trail conditions closer to the actual event\, but last year Base Station Road was open and well-plowed. The trail was lightly packed snow with minimal ice. The 2-mile walk to Gem Pool is gently uphill along the Ammonoosuc River. \nJust past the pool the trail goes from an easy upward slope to essentially a one-mile snow-covered staircase. Since my knees were already creaky during the Hoover Administration\, I am not planning to tackle the higher parts of the trail. THERE WILL BE NO PRESSURE TO GO PAST GEM POOL. If more experienced and ambitious members wish to continue on up the steeper sections\, bon voyage; I recommend good microspikes\, ample food and water\, and good layering of clothes. \nME: I have organized a couple of MOAC trips before. I first hiked in the White Mountains when I was 3 years old. I have organized multiple trips there with friends\, including with people who were completely new to hiking. I will move at a leisurely pace. If you want to go faster than me\, cool beans. If you want to go slower than me\, tough noogies\, you won’t go slower than me\, because I don’t leave people behind. \nYOU: this is intentionally geared toward anyone who is curious about winter in the Whites and would like an easy introduction with friends. Conversely\, if this is your 15th season summiting Washington and snowboarding back down\, it would be great to have you\, but you may find both the pace and the terrain somewhat dull.

SUMMARY:XC Ski at Five Fields Farm
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hit the beautiful ski trails at Five Fields Farm in Bridgton. There are trails for every level of skier (both classic and skate)\, so if we have different abilities within the group we may split up. I like the expert trails which involve hills but there are plenty of trails that are more flat. Tickets are $16 per person and rental packages are also $16 – CASH ONLY. Please be geared up with your ticket and ready to hit the trail by 10 AM – arrive early if you need to rent. Temps will be moderate but it may be windy\, so be prepared with different layers. Bring lunch/snacks and water – we will probably ski until 1 or 2. Please RSVP so I have an idea how many are coming\, and to arrange car pooling. There’s no maximum group size on this trip since we can split into smaller groups. Fully vaccinated skiers only if you want to carpool – I will ask for a photo of your vax card if we haven’t done a trip together before.

SUMMARY:HIKE WOLFE'S NECK STATE PARK - FREEPORT\, MAINE
DESCRIPTION:We will be hiking trails in the woods and along the wooded Casco Bay shoreline throughout Wolfe’s Neck State Park. If approaching from the center of Freeport\, take Flying Point Road and watch for the directional signs for the park. The signs will eventually indicate a right hand turn on to Wolfe’s Neck Road.  Watch for additional signage and there will eventually be a sign indicating a left hand turn on to the State Park access road. After passing the entrance booth\, bear right into the parking lot that is directly ahead. We will meet at this parking lot and step off at 11 AM. Bring cleats\, hiking poles\, backpacks for lunches\, etc. and sufficient layered clothing as we will be in the woods much of the time but after hiking a while it may start to warm up a bit. We will be hiking two different loops and take a lunch break at the group picnic shelter between the loops. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Machu Picchu
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the Sacred Valley of Peru (Urubamba)\, where the Incas built temples to the sun and other deities. \nMachu Picchu is the most famous of the archaeological sites\, built by the Inca but there are many more. SUMMARY:Casting Call for a Commercial
DESCRIPTION:Do you want to be in an advertisement?  The board received this request from AHC Casting.  They are going to do an advertisement for T Mobile.  So\, if you’re a T Mobile customer and live in the Augusta area\, read on.  In particular\, they would like to find a family who is active\, outdoorsy\, likes winter activities\, etc\, and ….who uses T Mobile. \nI’m reaching out with an unusual inquiry. My office is casting a T Mobile commercial that is going to be shooting in Augusta\, ME in late February. We are seeking LOCAL families (who currently live in/near Augusta or the surrounding cities – Vassalboro\, Benton\, Oakland\, China\, Norridgewock\, Waterville) who are also real T Mobile customers who might want to be considered for the project. It’s going to be a fun\, one-day shoot for $1200/ person. If production decides to film talent in their home they’ll earn an additional $300.  \nWe would like to find a family who is active\, outdoorsy\, likes winter activities\, etc\, and ….who uses T Mobile. \nWe are holding zoom interviews on Monday and Tuesday (January 30 & 31) and anyone who wants to be considered can email at this address directly. lindsay@alysonhorncasting.com  \nI am available to speak more about this project if you have questions and please feel free to check out our Instag. ram page as it has a lot of our current work: https://www.instagram.com/ahccasting.  The website is: https://www.ahccasting.com/.

SUMMARY:HIKE MORSE MOUNTAIN & SEAWALL BEACH - PHIPPSBURG
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a peaceful hike through the conifers along a woods road through the Bates – Morse Mountain Preserve that ends at the expansive and picturesque Seawall Beach and return.  We will meet at the Bates – Morse Mountain parking lot and step off at 11 AM and return to the parking lot around 2 PM.  As there are areas along the road with moderate grades\, plan on bringing cleats given recent weather events. For those that wish\, bring a light lunch to enjoy at the beach. As we will be on the beach during the ebb tide\, there should be a generously wide berth and somewhat firm footing available for hiking. Although temps are predicted to be in the low 40’s the day of the hike\, be prepared in the event of off-shore winds. Take Maine Route 209 through Phippsburg to the point where the road continues straight on to Maine Route 216.  GO STRAIGHT ON TO MAINE ROUTE 216 at this point. Approximately 0.8 miles down 216\, look for a road sign on the left for Morse Mountain. The parking lot will be about 500 feet up that road on the left. For cell phone contact on the day of the hike\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that\, 207-844-8142 or mcb-12nam@outlook.com.  Be aware that cell phone service in that area can be spotty. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:November 2023 Tanzania Wildlife Safari Update
DESCRIPTION:Great to see everyone at the monthly meeting\, and I hope you enjoyed the presentation on African Safari Adventure! \nThere were questions about other activities and hiking for the November 2023 trip I have posted. This is a wildlife safari\, which is why it is listed as “other” for category of adventure. That said\, there are a wide variety of activities that may be scheduled by our guide at the lodges\, and that are listed\, such as a flora and fauna walk\, a visit to a Maasai Village\, or a visit to the Cultural Center in Arusha\, which is amazing! Our Guide can also arrange a day hike of Kilimanjaro for those who wish to add a day to their itinerary before or after the Safari. Some wildlife parks permit walking safari days as well! \nThis is a once in a lifetime outdoor\, wilderness adventure\, and space is limited! I have updated my notes on the posting. Please note\, the cost of 4950.00 cannot be quantified without the full itinerary\, so you may see what is included. There will be an internal flight as part of the journey\, similar to those in my presentation. Please contact me for the complete itinerary and list of optional activities available. Thanks! \nUpdated Notes: “Join me for an experience and adventure of a lifetime in November 2023 with Herbivore Expeditions! Please note\, this is a wildlife safari journey\, and as such\, this will be an extra-ordinary wildlife viewing adventure. The Serengeti is known as the land of the lions\, and therefore all visitors must follow their guide’s instructions. For those who wish to go hiking in Africa\, please see additional options below\, and contact me for a guided itinerary with Herbivore Expeditions to climb Mt Kilimanjaro\, or for a day hike on Kilimanjaro. Thank you!”

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Africa
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Gina Garey tells us about an extraordinary\, life altering experience in East Africa\, including time in Tanzania and Kenya. \nWe visited several national parks\, conservancies and refuges\, the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the the Wildlife Orphanage located adjacent to the Mt. Kenya Safari Club\, to name a few highlights of the journey. \nThe cultural exchange opportunities and wildlife viewing at a Unesco World Heritage site were unparalleled\, as we had the privilege of coming up close and personal with a wide variety of newborn species\, and of course\, the big five. \nOur wildlife guides were the “best on the ground” offering their insights and expertise as they knew exactly where and how to find the more extraordinary experiences for us all. With over 1\,000 photographs and dozens of videos\, it will be a challenge to condense such a special adventure in the bush\, but I’ll do my best! \n  \n___________________________________________\nGina has a Master’s Degree in Animal Behavior\, and operates a private practice here in Maine. She is an avid downhill and cross country skier. She is looking forward to getting back out on the slopes this winter with all you MOAC skiers\, following a number of health setbacks in recent years that are finally in the rearview mirror! Gina looks forward to some winter fun with you all! \nShe also serves as the State Director in Maine for Animal Wellness Action\, and the Center for a Humane Economy. \n___________________________________________\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. \n

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Yellowstone in Winter
DESCRIPTION:MOAC member (and board member) Marianne Hill will share slides and stories from her December 23- 28\, 2015  trip to Yellowstone.  Yellowstone has an eerie beauty in the winter as steam from hot springs dots or even shrouds the landscape.  Animals are easy to spot against the snow\, which averages over 13 feet deep near Yellowstone Lake.  Marianne visited Mammoth Hot Springs\, the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone; Yellowstone Lake; West Thumb geyser basin and more. Also\, there are some fascinating scientific discoveries associated with the park.  If you have visited Yellowstone in the winter\, please come and share your experience. \n___________________________________________\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers. \nWe may try to record using Zoom. \nMOAC Event is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: General Meeting\nTime: Dec 7\, 2022 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/86463290859?pwd=T1BRTWIrRWxmKzdjUUVlV3pRc0gzZz09 \nMeeting ID: 864 6329 0859\nPasscode: 366266 \n

SUMMARY:WALK POPHAM BEACH
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an approximately two & one-half hour walk along the beach from Popham Beach State Park to Fort Popham and return on Tuesday December 6th.  Although a chance of showers is predicted for that day\, it appears from the forecast this may be one of the last 50 + degree days for a while to take advantage of.  For those that wish\, pack a light lunch to enjoy in the vicinity of Fort Popham prior to the return leg of the walk. We will step off at 12 noon sharp from the Popham Beach State Park parking lot. As high tide will have been around 10 AM\, the entire walk should be during ebb tide ensuring a wide berth and decent walking conditions.  Getting there is straight forward as one can take Maine – 209 in Phippsburg right to Popham Beach State Park with adequate signage along Maine -209 directing visitors to the Park. We will meet in the center of the parking lot directly ahead of the entry shack. For any questions on the day of the walk\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that time\, 207-844-8142 or via mcb-12nam@outlook.com. Please note\, cell service in that area can be spotty. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hike Tuckermans Ravine
DESCRIPTION:Climb up to Lunch Rocks at Tuckerman’s Ravine\, about 6 miles round trip and 2700′ elevation gain. There may be skiers to watch\, although I’m guessing they’ll mostly be doing the Sherburne trail rather than the ravine. Expect winter conditions – micro spikes are required and snowshoes may be helpful. It will be windy and cold so also bring warm layers\, extra gloves\, a hot drink\, lunch\, water and snacks. RSVP by phone or text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times and carpool info (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We’ll probably stop somewhere afterwards for refreshments.
