SUMMARY:Climb Carter Dome
DESCRIPTION:Climb Carter Dome by way of Mt. Hight and 19 Mile Brook Trail. This is a challenging hike in winter conditions – 10.2 miles round trip\, 3\,500′ elevation gain. Wind chills will be around zero at the summits – be prepared with plenty of extra layers\, a warm hat\, spare gloves for when your first ones are sweaty and damp\, a hot drink\, and microspikes. Snowshoes may also be a good idea\, although I assume the trail will be well packed by Sunday. This week will bring the first snow and ice to the White Mountains\, so there could be 6″ or more on the trail. Bring lunch\, snacks and water in a winter-proof container as well. Also be sure you have a headlamp in your pack\, as it may be getting dark on the way down; also\, bring something blaze orange as Sunday hiking is allowed in New Hampshire. There are fantastic views from Mt. Hight – two of the photos on this website were taken there. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only. Call\, text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not starting at 2AM) and carpool information. I’m watching Sunday’s weather and if the chance for snow increases this may be re-scheduled for Saturday.

For those that wish\, pack in a lunch to enjoy prior to hiking back to the parking lot. The terrain out and back is an established woods road\, parts of which appear to have been paved at one time. There are some sections that are moderately steep. Take Maine – 209 through Phippsburg to the point where you go straight onto Maine – 216 (Small Point Road) (Maine – 209 goes off sharply to the left at this point) for approximately 0.8 miles and look for Morse Mountain Road on the left. Proceed up that road for approximately 500 feet or so to the trail parking lot. Barring anything unusual\, the objective will be to hit trail at 10 AM sharp and be back to the parking lot by 1 PM. If there are any questions that morning\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that\, 207-844-8142. Caution\, cell service can be spotty in that area.

SUMMARY:Take Pride in Acadia Day\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:For 31 years\, volunteers have gathered on the first Saturday of November to help ready the famous carriage roads for winter. Sponsored by Friends of Acadia\, teams are assigned troublesome sections of carriage roads where erosion can cause damage over the winter. The task? Rake the leaves and debris off the shoulders and into the woods. MOAC has had members at this event for many years. We have a team that will work together. \nIf you follow the Friends of Acadia link above\, there will be information about how to sign up for the event. PLEASE do not do that. Since we are working as a group\, use the sign up link below so I can keep track. I will submit our roster of names to Friends. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. Your email is so we can communicate before the weekend. Your phone number so we can as well during the weekend. \nMost who sign up make it a weekend\, but that is not required. The actual commitment to the park is from roughly 8:30 am to noon on Saturday. If you choose to make it a weekend\, the rest of the time is yours. \nThere is no cost to the event itself. If you choose to stay over\, you will need to find your own lodging. Tam and I are staying at the Bar Harbor Grand Hotel\, right in downtown and that has been the hotel of choice for the most part for a few years now. But\, you can do as you wish in this regard. The Grand offers a free breakfast. Local restaurants for the rest. \nBack for 2022\, however\, is the free lunch after the work Saturday. Discontinued during Covid\, it’s back. After our work commitment is done\, we can head over to the Park Headquarters on Eagle Lake Road for a “CCC” lunch. Chili\, cornbread\, and cider. At least that’s what it used to be. Aside from the ingredients\, it’s named to honor the Civilian Conservation Corp\, who did a lot of work in Acadia.

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Travel in Burma!
DESCRIPTION:Visit the fascinating country of Burma (Myanmar) with Jean Armstrong.\n\nJean\, a long-time MOAC member\, waited to travel independently to Burma (Myanmar) until 2011 when it was possible without going via a government restricted tour. Here\, she experienced 3 World Heritage Sites. Shimmering\, gleaming Schwedagon\, 6 acres of temples and stupas in Yangon was spectacular as was the vibrant tea house street culture.\n\nShe visited Inle Lake\, a trekking area with many colorful ethnic minority groups\, packs of dogs and frequent brownouts. Inle lake has stilt villages built in the middle of the lake\, and active farming and fishing done on the lake berms. She was able to bicycle and wander into countless payas and stupas in search of frescos in Old Bagan\, where there are 6000 temples built between the 11th and 13th century. Armstrong spent time in the city of Mandalay which has gravel streets and 1 trishaw\, or motorcycle taxi for every 3 people there.\n\nShe took trucks to U Bein Bridge\, the tallest Teak pedestrian bridge spanning 3/4 of a mile and Sagaing\, where 600 white temples are set in the mountains along a river with hilly enclosed staircases running from 1 temple to another. The highlight of her trip was being the only Westerner in a military town and finding an ex Shan State videographer for a guide. They rode into Shan State on degraded roads on his motorcycle and stayed in Palaung village homes. She was overwhelmed with the desire of the Burmese and the minority groups to connect with her and share stories about their experiences of living in an oppressed country where time stood still for 50 years.\n\nWhile it is still possible to obtain a 28 day VISA to visit a few select restricted areas of Burma\, The US State Dept. strongly recommends against it due to safety issues which have increased since the 2021 coup.\n\nArmstrong is a long time MOAC member since the first year of the club and has enjoyed participating and leading a number of sports of any season.\n\n___________________________________________ \nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \nWhile we would love to see you in person\, here is a zoom link: \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85487590664?pwd=YjM3bG1xbnl5MEM5STNmUGJNSEVyQT09 \nMeeting ID: 854 8759 0664\nPasscode: 362996 \n

SUMMARY:Hike Thayer Brook Preserve
DESCRIPTION:This is a no hunting game preserve that is part of the Royal River Land Trust.  In spite of that you\, may want to wear blaze orange. Meet at 10 AM at the trailhead — 92 Ramsdell Rd. in Gray. If you are driving in from 202\, it’s on the right just after Bud’ Lane and you will see a blue sign with white lettering for Thayer Brook Preserve. \nBring a snack or lunch and water. Poles are optional but I found them to be helpful on some of the trails. It’s about a 4-mile hike with ups and downs but no significant elevation. There are several large puddles that can be walked around. The trail goes around a marsh and through the woods. \nThis trip is weather dependent. \nThere are about 8 – 10 parking spots. Let me know if you are interested in carpooling. \nPlease contact me if you plan to go so I contact you in case of cancellation. betsy.hanscom@gmail.com 207-754-9692 call or text

SUMMARY:Sunday Oct 30 Hike South Moat Mountain in Conway NH
DESCRIPTION:Weather looks good for this 5.8 mile 2132′ climb up South Moat Mt in Conway NH.  High of 65 forecasted for Conway but temps will most likely be low to mid 50s at the top.  Regardless\, many layers including warm layers and good hiking boots are a must.  Bring water\, food\, first aid kit\, camera.  Poles recommended for descending – especially if your knees frequently talk to you. \nEstimated hike start is 10am with a finish by approximately 3pm – this includes stops and lunch at the top.   Stopping for beverages/food on the way home is an option as well. \nThis will be a slow paced hike (1) because I am slow (2) because I have not hiked much this past summer and (3) I have not done this hike before.  However\, this is not a beginner hike – more like intermediate/advanced. \nCarpooling encouraged and we will meet at the Hannaford in Standish – please be vaccinated due to carpooling. \nLimit 8 people.  Please text or call Elaine at 207-650-7417 by Saturday 9pm to reserve your spot and get the final meeting times. \nAllTrails link to the trail map and description: \nhttps://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/new-hampshire/south-moat-mountain-trail

SUMMARY:Hike Morse Mountain & Seawall Beach
DESCRIPTION:Please consider joining us for a steady but peaceful 6.4 KM (3.8 mile) out & back hike through the Bates – Morse Mountain Conservation Area off Small Point Road (ME-216) in Phippsburg.  Prior to the return leg of the hike\, we will be able to take in the beauty of the incredibly expansive and unspoiled Seawall Beach as it looks out on open ocean and Popham Beach State Park to the East.  For those that wish\, pack in a lunch to enjoy prior to hiking back to the parking lot. Please note that we will be proceeding rain or shine barring a sustained deluge. The terrain out and back is an established woods road\, parts of which appear to have been paved at one time. There are some sections that are moderately steep.  Take Maine – 209 through Phippsburg to the point where you go straight through onto Maine 216 (Small Point Road) (Maine – 209 goes off sharply to the left at this point). Proceed on Maine – 216 for approximately 0.8 miles and look for the Morse Mountain Road sign on the left. Proceed up that road for approximately 500 feet or so to the trail parking lot. Barring anything unusual\, the objective will be to get back to the parking lot no later than 1 PM.  If there are any questions that morning\, 802-770-9106. Prior to that 207-844-8142.  Caution\, cell service can be spotty in that area. Please note:  We will hit the trail at 10 AM sharp in order to help ensure we are back by 1 PM.

SUMMARY:MH&T’s Flagstaff Hut
DESCRIPTION:Please be vaccinated to join this trip. Thanks! \nMaine Huts & Trails operates four “Eco-Lodges” in northern Maine\, and for the weekend of October 14-16\, their Flagstaff Hut is all ours. The hut is located on the eastern shore of Flagstaff Lake\, about a 2.5 hour drive from Portland. \nThis will be our 8th year leading this trip and each year it is an experience to remember. Good company\, good food\, and the Maine woods. How could it not be? \nFlagstaff Hut (in name only) is an off-the-grid lodge (capacity of 44-48) with amenities. Electricity is provided by solar panels and a generator. Hot water via propane\, and heat\, if needed\, via wood. The building has composting toilets\, showers\, and a full commercial kitchen with refrigeration. \nThe cost for this weekend is $65 per person. \nSleeping is bunk room style (earplugs) in two separate buildings apart from the main lodge (earplugs). \nYou need to bring a sleeping bag\, pillow cover (recommended)\, clothes\, and personal items (earplugs). You will need to provide your own food for Friday\, Saturday morning\, and Saturday lunch. You DO NOT need to bring anything to cook with or on. You will have full use of the commercial kitchen. In a process perfected by Tammy\, you will be asked bring a small amount of food to contribute to the cause for Saturday dinner. More on that later. Sunday breakfast is a full spread paid for by part of your payment for the weekend. \nCoffee/tea/hot chocolate will be provided at least in the mornings and for some reason\, Happy Hours tend to materialize in the late afternoons. No obligation to participate but donations for those are welcome as well. \nThe hut is designed to be remote. You cannot drive to it. Gear can be dropped off at the service gate to shorten the distance but all must be carried in and out. We try to have as many carts and wagons as people are willing to bring to share to help move stuff. Your vehicle will be two miles from the hut when parked in the lot. \nActivities can include hiking\, mountain biking\, paddling\, navel gazing\, reading\, puzzles\, drinking wine\, staring at the fire. Music if the right people show up. Keep moving every second\, or do nothing. \nPlease click HERE to sign up. \nChecks can be made to Peter Mullen and mailed to 38 Lawrence Rd\, Gray. $65 per person for the weekend\, \nWe also accept Venmo. Pay to tammy-mullen-5. Please put “MOAC” in the comments. \nWe look forward to seeing old friends and new faces at Flagstaff this fall.

DESCRIPTION:Join me for a MOAC tradition that is back!! \n\n\nWe will be camping at Bar Harbor Campground.   See link:  https://www.thebarharborcampground.com/  Please review so that you are aware of the campground rules\, etc.  I believe tenting is $34.00 per night.   They do not take credit cards or reservations but we have never had issues securing sites.  We generally camp along Loop “B”. \nThe plan will be to bike the carriage paths or hike.  If anyone wants to post a planned trip\, it will be welcome.  Otherwise\, decisions will be spontaneous. \nIf there is interest\, potluck on Saturday night.  If not\, everyone is on their own for food. \nHopefully the weather will cooperate.  If not\, we can bail at the last minute. \n  \n

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting featuring Dan Kidd!
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at the monthly general meeting IN PERSON to hear: \nTips on Running Longer Trips\, Things I wish I hadn’t learned …\nwith Dan Kidd \nDan Kidd\, a longtime almost founding member – and past 4X president — will speak on what he has learned not to do when running a longer trip. Many of you have been warned about these trips\, many to no avail. And yet people continue to sign up so Dan must be doing something right. \nCome see the why and the how to put the “A” for adventure into a trip! We will follow the thoughts and planning along with photos of canoe trips through the canyons of the Rio Grande River\, one of his very favorite trips.\n——————–\nDan is almost a charter member of MOAC. He’s been around a long time. He has led many of the most ambitious adventures ever undertaken. The Amazon\, the Everglades\, the Rio Grande\, the Mediterranean to just name a few. Dan is a master of all trades. A licensed pilot and boat captain\, he is the club expert on long distant adventures. And no\, despite rumors to the contrary\, Dan has never lost anyone on a trip (that we know of). \nWe will try to zoom this meeting: \nMOAC Event is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: My Meeting\nTime: Oct 5\, 2022 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/81401636934?pwd=aWZzVFpUNVYrV0RUZXdHNW14WXh3QT09 \nMeeting ID: 814 0163 6934\nPasscode: 604663\nOne tap mobile\n+13092053325\,\,81401636934#\,\,\,\,*604663# US\n+13126266799\,\,81401636934#\,\,\,\,*604663# US (Chicago) \nDial by your location\n+1 309 205 3325 US\n+1 312 626 6799 US (Chicago)\n+1 646 876 9923 US (New York)\n+1 646 931 3860 US\n+1 301 715 8592 US (Washington DC)\n+1 386 347 5053 US\n+1 408 638 0968 US (San Jose)\n+1 564 217 2000 US\n+1 669 444 9171 US\n+1 669 900 6833 US (San Jose)\n+1 719 359 4580 US\n+1 253 215 8782 US (Tacoma)\n+1 346 248 7799 US (Houston)\nMeeting ID: 814 0163 6934\nPasscode: 604663\nFind your local number: https://us02web.zoom.us/u/kqr8EEgLt \n

SUMMARY:Climb Baldface Circle Loop
DESCRIPTION:*** Changed to Saturday because of weather. *** We’ll go up the steep rock face of Baldface to South Baldface peak\, across the ridge to North Baldface and come down the Bicknell Ridge trail. It’s about 10 miles all together\, 3\,650′ elevation gain – a long and challenging hike. This isn’t for anyone with a fear of heights – there are some exposed feeling places on the bald face. Bring at least 2 liters water\, extra layers for the top including a rain jacket (highs will be in the 50s on the ridge and it’s usually windy)\, lunch and snacks. If the chance of rain increases I may reschedule this for Saturday. RSVP by text\, call or email for meeting places and times and to arrange car pooling (we’re not leaving at 2 am); max group size is 8. Fully vaccinated hikers only. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please let me know your experience climbing 4000 footers this year\, and send me a photo of your vax card when you RSVP. I can’t stop for refreshments afterwards but one car probably will.

SUMMARY:Happy Hour
DESCRIPTION:Happy Hour this week will be at “Run of the Mill” at 100 Main Street down in Saco. Easy to get to: Take I95 to the Saco/OOB Exit proceeding on to the spur (I195) which brings you to Route 1; turn right on to Route 1 and “Run of the Mill” will be on your right in about one mile. \nGreat food\, full bar\, and their own microbrewery onsite. They have a great deck which is pretty much on the Saco River (they prefer to seat folks here who will be eating something). Their bar (where we normally sit) is cozy with lots of wood. Free parking in their lot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the advent of cooler weather\, MOAC Happy Hours may now be located at establishments offering limited or no options for outdoor seating.  For each Happy Hour venue\, we will try to give as much information as practical about available seating options.\n\nParticipation in Happy Hour events\, regardless of seating options\, is a personal decision and MOAC assumes no liability for potential health risks associated with attending these activities.\n\nVaccination against COVID-19 (including approved booster shots) is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED\, but not required for participation in Happy Hour events.   Participants are expected to practice safe behaviors including social distancing\, hand washing and wearing a mask when not eating/drinking or when not seated.   Please be respectful of other people’s choices and comfort level.  Do not participate if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting COVID symptoms\, have recently tested positive for COVID or have come into close contact with someone who may be COVID positive.

SUMMARY:Rail to Trail Biking in Aroostook County
DESCRIPTION:I will be in Aroostook County for work and plan to take my bike along.  There are two substantial Rail to Trail systems in the area; the Aroostook Valley Trail and the Bangor to Aroostook Trail.   They start in the Presque Isle/Caribou area.  It’s a 4 1/2 hour drive from Portland to that area (I thought it was more so that was a relief!)   Accommodations are on your own.  I have an Airbnb reserved and there’s other options for places to stay.  It’s a beautiful\, remote area to explore and I’m open to discuss options.  Call or email if you have an interest to discuss further.

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting with Wendy Hayes
DESCRIPTION:Let’s Visit Iceland!\nJoin us as Wendy Hayes takes on a journey to a beautiful country with waterfalls\, cliffs\, volcanoes\, and hot springs – it’s just an amazing place. \nShe’s made several trips to Iceland\, the last trip in June 2021.  She’ll be sharing some of her images\, knowledge\, and adventures at the September 7 meeting. If you’ve been before\, we can share our experiences.  If you’ve never been and are curious or have questions\, here’s your chance to explore the possibility.  Or maybe you just like looking at the pretty pictures. \nPlease come and share Iceland! \n\nWendy is our current club Secretary. After spending her week at work in front of a computer\, she loves spending at least one day a weekend hiking in the White Mountains\, sometimes with MOAC\, or other groups\, and sometimes solo hiking.  She also really enjoys sea kayaking.  Wendy loves nature and feels so privileged when she has the chance to wander through it.  In the past few years she’s gotten back to doing some traveling\, going to Iceland several times as well as Costa Rica and Mont Blanc\, where she had the opportunity to hike and kayak in other environments and broaden her worldview through the eyes of other cultures. \nAnd we’re back at the A2U2: Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.
