SUMMARY:White Mountain Hike\, TBD
DESCRIPTION:Hi everyone… my first MOAC post in many years!  I’m hoping to hike on Saturday despite cloudy weather (and very sorry to conflict with Winterfest)… thinking of either Mts. Pierce and Jackson in Crawford Notch\, or Mt. Chocorua via Champney Falls\, but am open to other suggestions in the 3500-4500′ range.  Would strongly suggest recent winter hiking experience and appropriate winter gear.  Brisk-ish pace; I’m usually about 3/4 book time or a little less.   Please email me if interested… thanks! \nRuby

SUMMARY:Winterfest Outing - Bike via back roads to Babb's Covered Bridge / walk The Mountain Division Trail
DESCRIPTION:This is an outing during “Winter”fest. Looks like we won’t be having a storm before Winterfest\, in lieu of snow shoeing and skiing\, we have a bike trip planned to Babb’s Covered Bridge (2.4 miles away from the farm) so bring a bike! If a group would rather walk a portion of The Mountain Division Trail\, the trail is still icy (proof that\, yes\, we did have winter!). Please bring spikes if you take that route.

SUMMARY:MOAC General Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Carlie Casey of Bethel to Present on Nearly 1\,000 Miles of Nordic Skiing in Norway\nIn mid-February 2023\, Carlie Casey and Ann Speth of Bethel\, Maine flew to Norway with the intention of cross-country skiing as far north as possible before the melting snow would put an end to their skiing adventure. Skiing the entire length of Norway had been a dream of Carlie’s after several weeks-long trips in prior years. As it turns out\, starting in the south and skiing in one continuous path northward\, using marked routes connecting Norway’s backcountry huts\, was not as straightforward as maps and websites suggested. \nJoin Carlie as he shares breathtaking slides of the “birthplace” of Nordic skiing\, describes problem-solving on such a trip\, and opens his pack to reveal what they both learned about the gear best suited to hut-to-hut skiing. Carlie will share his experience with the different qualities of Nordic skis and gear. \nCarlie is a credentialed Technical Director (TD) by the Federation of International Skiing (FIS) and the US Ski and Snowboard Association (USSSA). He was a long-time West Coast TD before moving back East to join his late wife\, near their hometown. As a FIS TD he has been around the world working ski races and helps the local Chisholm Ski Club at Black Mountain of Maine\, he is also a key cog in the Bethel Trails program. You can find him in the X-C Ski stadium helping with set and design or on the trail making sure the rules are followed in multiple international races held in the U.S. \nNot only an avid Nordic skier\, Carlie has accomplished both long-distance biking and hiking goals\, including the Appalachian Trail more than once. \n\nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Ossippee River Class 2 Whitewater trip
DESCRIPTION:I have lead this trip annually since I joined MOAC in 1998. Will try it again on April 20th. 7 miles of Class 2 whitewater. Not a show and go trip. To join you need to contact me to discuss experience and what gear you are planning to use. This includes appropriate clothing for the occasional unplanned swim because at this part of the year the water is cold. For those interested and contact me I will provide details for where to meet and the time to meet. Plan to stop along the river for lunch. Also this is not a raft trip. We use either canoes or whitewater kayaks ( P.S. your fiberglass sea kayak would not be a good choice) Anyway give me a call. Trip is also weather dependent. Not going to reenact a previous trip where some of us became members of the “Not So Bright Bunch club”. I am hoping for a day with no rain and hopefully relatively warm. ( as I age\, it is no longer as much fun running the river when it is barely above freezing or in a rainstorm….) Not going to replay Trip is also being offer through the Penobscot\, Paddle and Chowder Society (PPCS) … Hopefully we can have another good day on the river. SUMMARY:Bug to Barrel. 32 mile Round Trip Bike ride
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at Bug Light Park in South Portland at 10 am on Sunday.  We’ll bike the Eastern Trail from there to Barrelled Souls Brewery in Biddeford\, stop for a yummy beer\, and back again.  The ride is about 1/3 on paved bike path\, 1/3rd on roads\, and 1/3rd on gravel.  This is a great chance for people considering the trip from St. Johnsbury to Burlington Vermont in June to see how their bikes do on an assortment of conditions\, and how you do on a longer ride.  Attempts will be made to stick together\, or at the least\, we’ll meet up at Barrelled Souls.  But if people want to split up\, that’s fine too.  Personally\, I aim to be faster than a 10mph pace in the saddle.  I’m no speed demon.  If you don’t feel like you’re heart is pumping below 15\, I’ll see you at the Brewery! \nBarrelled Souls is my personal favorite brewery in Maine\, they specialize in really big beers\, like 14 to 15%\, and also sours.  They’ve got a few basic beers if your tastes don’t extend to the big and sour.  Feel free to email at patrickjamescoon@gmail.com with any questions. \n

We will be receiving a large order of bareroot native shrub seedlings and will get to work potting nearly 1500 shrubs as fast as we can get to them. This is great opportunity to get your hands dirty\, learn about growing container stock\, and check out our greenhouse in Wells! We have selected specific native shrubs with habitat goals in mind for the New England cottontail- many of these shrubs will be outplanted for early successional/young forest habitat restoration projects. \n  \nWednesday\, 4/24/24 \nThe plants will be picked up in Dover\, NH in the morning\, so we should be ready to start planting at the greenhouse at 12:00 PM. \n Thursday\, 4/25/24 \n There will still be plenty of plants to get potted\, so we will start at the greenhouse at 09:00 AM and go until we run out. \n Garden gloves\, sunscreen and hats are recommended\, and we will have extra gloves and sunscreen for those who need them. \nPlease let me (Colin) know if and when you are interested in coming to help\, even for just an hour or two. I will be sending a follow up email to anyone interested to firm up the details. \n If you have any other questions or concerns\, please don’t hesitate to reach out! “ \n  \n  \nThis a a fun and worthwhile volunteer activity.  Work is in close proximity to others – a good socializing opportunity as well.   In the fall\, Rachel Carson will again seek volunteers for “Rabitat Planting Parties” where these pots established in April are planted in designated NE Cottontail habitats located between Cape Elizabeth and Kittery. \n  \nAlso see poster contained within image attached to this calendar entry \nAdditional NE Cottontail restoration info: https://www.wbur.org/news/2023/10/02/new-england-cottontail-rabbit-habitat

SUMMARY:ACADIA CAMPING\, BIKING\, AND HIKING
DESCRIPTION:Seawall is now full for the weekend.  If interested in going to Acadia\, please check Bass Harbor Campground which is nearby. \n  \nFor many years\, it has been a MOAC tradition to go to Bar Harbor Campground for Memorial Weekend.  Unfortunately\, the campground has been sold to a large corporation and is no longer a “first come\, first serve” facility.  I am finding the price points too expensive for me to want to make a reservation. \nI have booked a site at Seawall Campground which is part of Acadia National Park.  Reservations can only be made 2 months in advance so Memorial Weekend has just opened up and is filling up very quickly.  As of 3:30PM \, 3/28\, there are 22 campsites still left.  Most are in Loop C.  If interested\, you must act NOW!!!  Cost is $30 per night with a 50% discount for anyone having a National Park Lifetime Senior Pass.  Go to: www.recreation.gov to make reservations.  Also\, you can cancel two days in advance for a $10 cancellation fee if the weather does not cooperate.

SUMMARY:Mansell Mountain–Southwest Harbor
DESCRIPTION:This is a loop hike to Mansell Mountain\, using the following trails–Perpendicular\, Mansell\, and Cold Brook.  Distance is 2.4 miles\, elevation gain is 870 feet\, book time 2 hours and 20 minutes.  The Perpendicular Trail is an interesting trail with 1\,000 stone steps\, several iron rungs\, and one iron ladder.  It is referred to as the “stairway to heaven”.  The trailhead is at the Long Pond pumping station.  Directions are:  Follow Seal Cove Road in Southwest Harbor.   At .6 mile\, take the first right onto Long Pond Road and follow until the end.  I am not sure if a park pass is required but I would make the assumption that it is.

SUMMARY:Hike/bike Acadia adventure
DESCRIPTION:This has been a traditional MOAC adventure for many years\, (thanks to Jim Lennox).  We will meet at the end of Duck Brook Road in Bar Harbor at 9AM sharp and bike the carriage trails with a couple of small hikes thrown in.  Bike for a bit\, then hike Conners Nubble\, a short but fairly steep .1 mile with a great view of Eagle Lake.  Back onto the bikes and head for the challenging Around the Mountain trail.  Stop and hike Parkman Mountain\, 1 mile round trip.  Back onto the bikes\, next stop will be Jordan Pond.  If we are feeling extremely ambitious\, we might do Day Mountain\, another 1 mile round trip.  Total biking miles are 18 to 20 miles.  Road bikes are not acceptable on the carriage paths\, helmets are mandatory.  Assume this is a full day but if folks want to start with us and create their own route\, that is entirely acceptable.  Park pass is required to park on Duck Brook Road.  Bring lunch and plenty of water although water bottles can be refilled at Jordan Pond.

SUMMARY:Eastern Trail Ride. 40 Miles Scarborough to Kennybunk
DESCRIPTION:Starting from the top of the eastern trail\, off of Black Point Road in Scarborough at 10:00 this Saturday  We’ll go to the end of the trail section of the Eastern Trail in Kennybunk\, and back again.  There isn’t a trail through Biddeford\, so we can go one way down and another way back to break it up a bit.  The whole ride is just shy of 40 miles\, mostly flat\, and probably more than half on gravel\, some through Biddeford\, and some of that not the nicest biking\, but it gets nice again soon.\n\nAim to meet at 10AM on Saturday.  Feel free to turn around sooner if that’s too long a ride.  We can stop somewhere along the way for a beer and lunch.  Very Civilized.  Biddeford has a ton to offer these days too.  The whole thing will take about 5 hours. Text me at 207 323.1805 if you’re planning on coming.\n  \nHere is the ride. \nhttps://www.google.com/maps/dir/Eastern+Trail+Scarborough\,+Scarborough\,+ME/43.4132286\,-70.5677192/Eastern+Trail+Scarborough\,+Scarborough\,+ME/@43.4952345\,-70.5423517\,20577m/data=!3m2!1e3!4b1!4m15!4m14!1m5!1m1!1s0x4cb299ccc2601687:0x8394b8bbbfa60a7e!2m2!1d-70.3384599!2d43.581583!1m0!1m5!1m1!1s0x4cb299ccc2601687:0x8394b8bbbfa60a7e!2m2!1d-70.3384599!2d43.581583!3e1!5m1!1e3?entry=ttu

SUMMARY:MOAC National Trails Day Annual Trail Maintenance
DESCRIPTION:Join the MOAC trail crew as we celebrate National Trails Day by volunteering to help maintain MOAC’s adopted hiking trails.  The Bald Peak and Sue’s Way trails on Pleasant Mountain have been under our care for a few years now.  The Loon Echo Land Trust manages all the trails on Pleasant Mountain and we work with them to keep the trails clear\, safe\, and fun for everyone.  A day of trail maintenance involves clipping back the limbs and brush\, raking twigs\, sticks\, leaves\, cleaning water bars\, and removing smaller blowdowns.  MOAC has a collection of trail tools\, so unless you have a favorite rake or pair of clippers\, all you need to being is enthusiasm and elbow grease.  Of course you’ll also want to wear sturdy footwear\, work gloves\, bring plenty of water\, lunch\, bug dope\, and a day pack for it all.  Watch the weather and be sure to have a warm and/or dry layer as necessary.  We start at 9am and end around 3:30pm-ish.  Please meet at the Bald Peak trailhead parking lot on Mountain Road Bridgton\, which is off Route 302.  The trailhead is about a mile past the ski area.  Most members will volunteer for the whole day.  But you can join the fun for just the morning\, or just the afternoon.  All help is welcome!  Just please let me know.   If you have any questions about the day\, give me a call or email.  We’d love to have you as part of the MOAC Trail Crew 2024! \nDana-the-Maintain-ah    650-5197   trails@moac.org

SUMMARY:3 Day 150 mile Vermont Rail Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:This is an unsupported Bike trip across Vermont.  The total distance is 155 miles over 3 days of biking.  The longest day is 57 miles.  We’ll be packing sleeping bags\, tents\, food and cooking equipment.  The first two days will be entirely on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail which is a beautiful\, really well built rail trail that winds its way through farms\, woods and small towns.  The last day will be on nice roads\, over North and South Hero Islands on Lake Champlain\, crossing Lake Champlain on the Island Line Trail.  We can spend the night with a friend who lives in St. Johnsbury.  I can bring everyone’s equipment in a truck and a trailer.  I’m a bike mechanic and I’ll pack spare parts and tools.  I’ll also arrange for emergency pick up if needed. \nDate is flexible pending interest and availability\, as well as the weather.  Feel free to get in touch with questions or concerns. \nDay 1.  Make our way to St. Johnsbury\, Vt. Have dinner and spend the night at a friend’s house. \nDay 2.  The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail climbs up at a 3% grade for the first 17 miles or so\, then down at a 2-3% grade for the next 20.  3% isn’t a hard grade\, but after 17 miles you’ll be delighted when it changes from up to down.  There is about 1600 feet of elevation gain in the first 17 miles.  We can stop for lunch at an iconic General Store and eat on the shores of Joe’s Pond.  Pack for Dinner which we will cook at our campground\, the Mountain View Campground\, which boasts a pool\, hot tubs and a great selection of local beer. \nDay 3.  This is a more remote stretch of Vermont\, and the trail runs mostly through woods.  We can stop for breakfast and pack for lunch at the Morrisville Food Coop\, then it’s into the woods.  The trail ends at Swanton where we can stop at Hannafords to pick up dinner and the following days Breakfast and Snacks.  There are a few miles of biking on a busy road to get to the campground\, which is Campbell’s Family Campground.  This is just a dairy farm on Lake Champlain that’s diversified into camping.  It can be loud at night\, but it’s a good spot.   \nDay 4.  Breakfast at the campground.  This day is Road Biking on North and South Hero Islands.  We’re off the rail trail and on to roads\, so there is some up and down\, but it’s a manageable 600 feet of climb over the day.  North and South Hero islands are beautiful rural islands that make for some great biking.  The last 10 miles or so is over the Island Line Trail\, which is a really exquisite causeway trail over the Lake.  There is a Ferry over a gap in the trail.  We’ll end the night at Burlington where we can enjoy some great food and Beer.  We’ll book an Air BNB for the night
