SUMMARY:3 Day 150 mile Vermont Rail Trail Ride
DESCRIPTION:This is an unsupported Bike trip across Vermont.  The total distance is 155 miles over 3 days of biking.  The longest day is 57 miles.  We’ll be packing sleeping bags\, tents\, food and cooking equipment.  The first two days will be entirely on the Lamoille Valley Rail Trail which is a beautiful\, really well built rail trail that winds its way through farms\, woods and small towns.  The last day will be on nice roads\, over North and South Hero Islands on Lake Champlain\, crossing Lake Champlain on the Island Line Trail.  We can spend the night with a friend who lives in St. Johnsbury.  I can bring everyone’s equipment in a truck and a trailer.  I’m a bike mechanic and I’ll pack spare parts and tools.  I’ll also arrange for emergency pick up if needed. \nDate is flexible pending interest and availability\, as well as the weather.  Feel free to get in touch with questions or concerns. \nDay 1.  Make our way to St. Johnsbury\, Vt. Have dinner and spend the night at a friend’s house. \nDay 2.  The Lamoille Valley Rail Trail climbs up at a 3% grade for the first 17 miles or so\, then down at a 2-3% grade for the next 20.  3% isn’t a hard grade\, but after 17 miles you’ll be delighted when it changes from up to down.  There is about 1600 feet of elevation gain in the first 17 miles.  We can stop for lunch at an iconic General Store and eat on the shores of Joe’s Pond.  Pack for Dinner which we will cook at our campground\, the Mountain View Campground\, which boasts a pool\, hot tubs and a great selection of local beer. \nDay 3.  This is a more remote stretch of Vermont\, and the trail runs mostly through woods.  We can stop for breakfast and pack for lunch at the Morrisville Food Coop\, then it’s into the woods.  The trail ends at Swanton where we can stop at Hannafords to pick up dinner and the following days Breakfast and Snacks.  There are a few miles of biking on a busy road to get to the campground\, which is Campbell’s Family Campground.  This is just a dairy farm on Lake Champlain that’s diversified into camping.  It can be loud at night\, but it’s a good spot.   \nDay 4.  Breakfast at the campground.  This day is Road Biking on North and South Hero Islands.  We’re off the rail trail and on to roads\, so there is some up and down\, but it’s a manageable 600 feet of climb over the day.  North and South Hero islands are beautiful rural islands that make for some great biking.  The last 10 miles or so is over the Island Line Trail\, which is a really exquisite causeway trail over the Lake.  There is a Ferry over a gap in the trail.  We’ll end the night at Burlington where we can enjoy some great food and Beer.  We’ll book an Air BNB for the night

DESCRIPTION:The Zoot Jumpers are playing for the Conant Homestead’s Saccarappa Summer Concert Series!  The Zoot Jumpers are a great\, fun dance band\, and also great fun to listen to.  Here’s a sample of their music.  Let’s get a good MOAC crowd to enjoy the music and support the band and Conant Homestead’s concert series. \nThe Zoot Jumpers are a Maine-based band that plays hot jump blues and cool swing\, including the great music of Count Basie\, Louis Jordan\, Squirrel Nut Zippers\, and more.  The band features Bruce Couillard on saxophones\, Michelle Boggs on trumpet\, Bess Jacques on piano\, Tom Jacques on bass and harmonica\, and Per Hanson on drums and harmonica.  Everybody sings! \nSuggested donation of $15 (all proceeds go to the musicians).  BYO chair or blanket\, food & drink. Event is outside on the beautiful grounds at 89 Conant Street in Westbrook.  Come early and walk the trails and meet the chickens and goats.  There is parking on the street but parking is also available in downtown Westbrook and from there the homestead is a short walk up the Presumpscot River along the Western Falls (near Mill Lane) and into the Conant Trails.  We also encourage folks to get takeout at one of Westbrook’s many fine eateries.

SUMMARY:Hike Long Ledges and Baker Hill\, Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Frenchman Bay Conservancy has some nice hikes away from the congestion of Acadia NP. These two hikes are moderate hikes through woods and granite. Baker Hill offers great views of Mount Desert Island. There are several possible loops so we can hike as much as we want. After\, we can stop at Tidal Falls. If the timing is right\, the reversing falls should be ripping. There may be some other sites we might like to catch. \nLet’s gather at 9:30 at the campground. It’s about a 25 minute drive to the trail head. Bring a lunch – not that many places and might be busy. \nIf you are not camping with us\, but would like to join\, text me at 207-801-1488.

SUMMARY:UPDATE kayak and BBQ canceled
DESCRIPTION:***With 30 to 40% chances of severe thunderstorms with hail around 4:00\, I’ve decided to cancel ***  \nHello!  Hoping to get out on the water at camp before the rain comes.  Kayak for about an hour and a half with a stop on a sandbar to swim or just stretch our legs.  On the water at 3:30 (so please come early enough to unload in time for that).  You are required to have a PFD and whistle with you on the water or you may get a ticket if the rangers are out.  I have extra kayaks (sit on tops) if needed\, but let me know ahead of time.  I have PFDs\, whistles and paddles to go with them. \nFor those interested\, we can eat after.  BYO protein for the grill\, beverages and a dish to share.   I’ll supply charcoal for the grill and condiments\, paper plates\, etc (but if you bring own reusable\, even better).   I have no musical skill\, but if anyone wants to bring an instrument to play\, happy to have you do that.  You’re welcome to just come to the BBQ if you can’t make the paddle – we should be back and ready to get the grill lit up by 5:30. \n

SUMMARY:General Meeting Changed to July 10
DESCRIPTION:Ghosts of Mount Washington by Marianne O’Conner\nMore than one hundred lives have been lost on Mount Washington — it’s no wonder there are stories about ghostly activity there.  \nJoin us at the monthly MOAC Meeting on Wednesday\, June 10 from 6:30pm-8:30 when guest speaker Marianne O’Connor will share stories about those who have lost their lives on the mountain and the memorials that were established after. Some of the memorials have mysterious activity around them. Each one is a sad tale of loss. Marianne will also discuss “The Presence\,” an energy believed to be related to the many lives lost on the deadly mountain.  Each story of tragedy has a lesson and a warning of the adage\, accidents do happen.\nMarianne O’Connor is a retired educator and worked as a school counselor in Nashua\, NH before she retired and moved to Maine. She researched\, wrote\, and published “Haunted Hikes of New Hampshire” in 2008\, and in 2019 began working with a new publisher\, Peter Randall Publishers of Portsmouth\, on a 2nd edition. Marianne has written articles which have appeared in “New Hampshire Magazine\,” Hippo Press\, “Memories of Maine” and other outlets. She has appeared in New Hampshire Public Television’s popular series\, “Windows to the Wild” with Willem Lange. Since 2009\, Marianne has presented programming in schools\, libraries\, and historical centers across New England.\nMarianne currently works for RSU5 in Freeport\, she volunteers for WMPG and produces a radio show\, “Rock Lobstah” on Sunday mornings at 10:00AM. Marianne serves on several committees in Lisbon\, including the Lisbon Historical Society.\nHer father and mother were avid hikers and introduced she and her siblings to the joys of the mountains.  Marianne enjoys hiking on local trails with her dog Bella and exploring local history.\nCome at 6:30 for social hour and snacks. Stay for pictures\, trip reports and an interesting discussion/presentation.

SUMMARY:15 Mile Androscoggin River Kayak Trip
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to a 15-mile MOAC kayak trip down the Androscoggin River on Saturday\, July 13 (the rain date is Sunday\, July 14). \nThanks to someone more familiar with the river\, the trip is now 15 miles with no portages. We will put in at Twin Bridge (Googins Island) in West Leeds and take out at Cherry Pond on River Road in Greene. The total distance is about 15 miles\, \nThis section has no rapids\, so it should be a moderate trip. Depending on group speed and current\, I estimate the time to be 5 to 6 hours on the water. We will meet at Cherry Pond on River Road in Greene at 8 am\, put our kayaks on 3-4 cars\, and carpool 20 minutes to Twin Bridge (Googins Island) in West Leeds. We will stop for lunch. We will stop for a group break if anyone needs a break. This section of the river is listed as scenic\, with ample opportunity to view wildlife. At the end of the trip\, we will carpool for 20 minutes to get the cars left in West Leeds. Expect a seven-hour day. Stopping at a local watering hole is an option. \nParticipants will need lunch\, water\, at least a 14.5-foot sea kayak\, have and wear a PFD\, know how to do a wet exit\, a self-rescue\, and an assisted rescue. A spray skirt and kayak wheels are recommended but not necessary. The trip is limited to 6-8 people. \nImages are Twin Bridge (Goggins Island) in West Leeds and Cherry Pond on River Road in Greene. \nAs of June 26\, eight people are registered: two men and six women. Feel free to sign up before registration closes on Monday\, July 8\, and I will put you on a waitlist.

SUMMARY:Rangeley State Park Long Weekend Camping
DESCRIPTION:Fellow MOAC’ers!! \nWelcome to summer!!  It’s time to start looking ahead and making plans for some brilliant outdoor adventures.  David and I are newer MOAC members and have decided to host our first weekend camping in Rangeley State Park.  Thanks to Tessa and other MOAC members (who we thank dearly) who worked the phone lines\, we were able to secure a group site\, along the water\, next to the beach\, the east side!!\n\nThe weekend begins the evening of Friday July 19th and carries onto the evenings of the 20th\, 21st and 22nd.  David and I will be there from the 19th through the 21st.  Attendees are free to stay through the 23rd.  We are opening up the weekend to 25 avid campers and outdoor adventurers.  The cost is $35 per person for all four nights.  Yes folks\, as seen on tv\, four nights for $35!!  Apologies in advance\, there are no refunds.\n\nWe stayed at this site last year –  25 campers with a blend of single and double site occupancy should ensure plenty of space.  We are not allowed to camp on the beach.  The sites are 150+ paces in from the parking.  Privy’s are on site and appropriately set a short distance from where we camp.  We noted with keen interest many had little four wheeled buggies to make carrying things in and out easier.  If we are majority singles\, please consider sharing a tent site as the sites are limited in number and some sites are larger than others.\n\nAlright… so you’ve decided to join… Here are the goods…  Fun is the order of the day.  We’ll need trip oriented leaders for hikes\, bikes\, walks and the like.  On Saturday I will lead a hike to Saddle Back from the trailhead on Route 4.  This is roughly 11.5 strenuous miles of pure joy.  Should we desire\, we can spot cars and hike down the mountain to Saddleback ski area which will shorten the mileage some but necessitates reconnecting to our vehicle(s) at day’s end.  Interested parties for this strenuous foot pounding endeavor should email me under separate cover to express interest and commit to car spotting.  To successfully complete this hike and be back at camp in time for the potluck we need to be at the trailhead 8am sharp so the day will start early.  You can learn a little more about the intended hike here:  https://www.mainetrailfinder.com/trails/trail/appalachian-trail-saddleback-mountain.  Rain will shift the hike to Sunday.  Biking\, Hiking\, Swimming\, Paddling are all treasured activities in the greater Rangeley arena.  Feel free to express your chosen endeavor and recruit participants.  There is a quaint town center for shopping if one desires.  Also – relaxing on the beach is just as much as an adventure.\n\nHosting will be new for us and your good humor\, flexibility and a willingness to pitch in makes the weekend a success.  David and I will host a pot-luck dinner on Saturday and will provide the proteins – chicken-sausage-burgers – or some variation thereof – along with fresh greens and vegetables for salads.  We’ll need folks to supplement with pasta mixes and desert.  To avoid food waste – contribute for fewer than will be present – this leans into the hope that all will be eaten.  I will maintain a food sign up list and share accordingly to avoid duplication of items.  I will email all attendees prior to our trip with final bits of information.  It is BYO-Beverages and all things in moderation keeps us sane\, happy and safe.  While Rangeley is very safe and reports little to no issues with wildlife it is critter country.  Secure all food coolers and food containers properly.  We will leave no open trash after the daily meals.  All trash can be disposed of in a bear safe dumpster by taking a short drive to the start of the campsites.  Group campfires Friday\, Saturday and Sunday.  Other than Saturday’s potluck – all meals and beverages are individual responsibility.\n\nChecks can be made payable and mailed to:  Robert Laverdure\, 93 Dead River Road\, Bowdoin\, ME  04287.  Deadline for trip commitment is July 12th.  We’ve heard of this thing called Venmo but sadly\, we only accept checks.\n\nCheers\,\nDave and Rob

It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day going book speed or faster. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 70 at the summit and warmer below\, but not as hot as recent days. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only (covid is still around)\, max group size is 8. Text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 am)\, and to carpool. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me to discuss your experience and gear rather than text or email. PLEASE NOTE: I’ll be camping in the White Mountains this weekend so you must sign up for this hike by 12 noon on Friday\, July 19 because after that I won’t have cell service and will not receive your messages. If you sign up\, we will wait no longer than 15 minutes for you after the designated meeting time and then will head out\, since I won’t know if you’ve canceled or been delayed.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s meet in Falmouth and sail on Beyond II in Casco Bay. Bring a light rain jacket\, a swim suit and towel\, and healthy snacks and beverages to share. Closed toe shoes are safer on a boat and flip flops are a bad idea. If there’s wind\, we’ll sail around\,  and if there isn’t any wind\, we’ll drop a hook and find a beach. SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting & Presentation
DESCRIPTION:August Presentation: MITA\, the Maine Island Trail Association \nPlease joins us as Membership Manager Kayla Bickerman-Martens of the Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) tells us who MITA is and how it came into being. She will also share information about the trail\, how to become a member\, and make the most of your membership using the App and the Guide. \nThe Maine Island Trail Association\, founded in 1988\, is a border-to-border (New Hampshire/Canada) water trail along the coast of Maine. Currently comprised of 258 sites that are available for public day use and/or overnight use. Each season\, we engage with upwards of 1\,000 volunteers and over 6\,000 members who help us maintain these incredible island ecosystems and keep them healthy and thriving. \n———————————————— \nKalyn joined the full-time MITA staff in February of 2023\, having previously served as a membership associate from 2021-2022. She was born and raised in Maine and has always had a connection to the islands\, particularly through her background in canoe and kayak instruction. She received her BA in Biology from Bowdoin and her MA in Conservation Biology from Columbia University\, and (fun fact) is also an entomologist. \n \n———————— \n\nIn addition to the presentations\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.
