Hiking includes Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument\, Baxter State Park (north entrance) and Mt. Chase. Paddle at Scraggly Lake or Grand Lake Matagamon (Baxter State Park). Hike to Grand Pitch on the Sebois River. Drop down to Grindstone and hike or bike the Penobscot River Trails. DESCRIPTION:Consider a foray into Baxter Park with bunkhouse accommodations at Chimney Pond. This will require a backpack of 3.3 miles each way in from Roaring Brook and out from Chimney Pond. There are multiple day hike options including all Katahdin peaks\, Russell and Davis Ponds\, Pamola caves\, NW Basin. Bunkhouse is reserved for September 19\, 20 and 21st. There are 7 spots open and $30 will hold space. \n\nThis is a trip for more experienced hikers with some backpacking/wilderness experience.  For details on equipment\, please refer to Backpacking checklist on REI.com. (Will not need tent due to enclosed bunkhouse.) Due to closeness of quarters\, prefer those with COVID vaccinations. DESCRIPTION:*** Changed to Saturday because of weather. *** We’ll go up the steep rock face of Baldface to South Baldface peak\, across the ridge to North Baldface and come down the Bicknell Ridge trail. It’s about 10 miles all together\, 3\,650′ elevation gain – a long and challenging hike. This isn’t for anyone with a fear of heights – there are some exposed feeling places on the bald face. Bring at least 2 liters water\, extra layers for the top including a rain jacket (highs will be in the 50s on the ridge and it’s usually windy)\, lunch and snacks. If the chance of rain increases I may reschedule this for Saturday. RSVP by text\, call or email for meeting places and times and to arrange car pooling (we’re not leaving at 2 am); max group size is 8. Fully vaccinated hikers only. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please let me know your experience climbing 4000 footers this year\, and send me a photo of your vax card when you RSVP. I can’t stop for refreshments afterwards but one car probably will.

SUMMARY:Rail to Trail Biking in Aroostook County
DESCRIPTION:I will be in Aroostook County for work and plan to take my bike along.  There are two substantial Rail to Trail systems in the area; the Aroostook Valley Trail and the Bangor to Aroostook Trail.   They start in the Presque Isle/Caribou area.  It’s a 4 1/2 hour drive from Portland to that area (I thought it was more so that was a relief!)   Accommodations are on your own.  I have an Airbnb reserved and there’s other options for places to stay.  It’s a beautiful\, remote area to explore and I’m open to discuss options.  Call or email if you have an interest to discuss further.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s Visit Iceland!\nJoin us as Wendy Hayes takes on a journey to a beautiful country with waterfalls\, cliffs\, volcanoes\, and hot springs – it’s just an amazing place. \nShe’s made several trips to Iceland\, the last trip in June 2021.  She’ll be sharing some of her images\, knowledge\, and adventures at the September 7 meeting. If you’ve been before\, we can share our experiences.  If you’ve never been and are curious or have questions\, here’s your chance to explore the possibility.  Or maybe you just like looking at the pretty pictures. \nPlease come and share Iceland! \n\nWendy is our current club Secretary. After spending her week at work in front of a computer\, she loves spending at least one day a weekend hiking in the White Mountains\, sometimes with MOAC\, or other groups\, and sometimes solo hiking.  She also really enjoys sea kayaking.  Wendy loves nature and feels so privileged when she has the chance to wander through it.  In the past few years she’s gotten back to doing some traveling\, going to Iceland several times as well as Costa Rica and Mont Blanc\, where she had the opportunity to hike and kayak in other environments and broaden her worldview through the eyes of other cultures. \nAnd we’re back at the A2U2: Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

DESCRIPTION:It’s the last Friday before Labor Day and we’d like to interest our group in something different. Happy Hour this Friday will be at THE PIRATE’S PATIO\, 2 Walnut Street in OOB. Please READ ON. \nThe “patio” is the sand of the beach. The place is rustic but they have a full bar and pub food. There typically is a one-piece band – a vocalist on a guitar singing mellow country music. \nGETTING THERE: If you take the Old Blue Point Road off of Route 1 (just set your GPS from Terra Cotta Pasta on that corner) you’ll get all the way to the Pirate’s Patio with ZERO TRAFFIC. \nPARKING: The town’s Milliken Street Parking Lot is large and always has plenty of room. It’s at the corner of Walnut and Milliken Street and is exactly one-tenth mile from Pirate’s Patio – a two to three minute walk. Last time I parked there it was $2.00 per hour. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the advent of cooler weather\, MOAC Happy Hours may now be located at establishments offering limited or no options for outdoor seating.  For each Happy Hour venue\, we will try to give as much information as practical about available seating options.\n\nParticipation in Happy Hour events\, regardless of seating options\, is a personal decision and MOAC assumes no liability for potential health risks associated with attending these activities.\n\nVaccination against COVID-19 (including approved booster shots) is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED\, but not required for participation in Happy Hour events.   Participants are expected to practice safe behaviors including social distancing\, hand washing and wearing a mask when not eating/drinking or when not seated.   Please be respectful of other people’s choices and comfort level.  Do not participate if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting COVID symptoms\, have recently tested positive for COVID or have come into close contact with someone who may be COVID positive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Paddle Quahog Bay Friday 9-2 from Bethel Point
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at the public boat launch (all-tide) at Bethel Point in Harpswell about 9:30 AM and start paddling about 10 AM. This boat launch has a porta-potty and an all-tide ramp. There is a $6 parking fee. \nThe tide will be low about 9:45 AM\, so we’ll paddle into Quahog Bay with the tide as it comes in\, following the shore (as close as we can get)\, exploring some coves that aren’t mud flats and stopping for a lunch or snack break on Little Snow Island (owned by the town of Harpswell). Plan on about a six-to-seven-mile paddle. \nThis trip is weather dependent\, but as of Aug 31st\, it looks like a good day with little wind. This bay is also somewhat protected. \nYou must have a sea kayak and wear a PFD. Spray skirts and wet suits are recommended. SUMMARY:Hike Crockers and Redington
DESCRIPTION:Hike North and South Crocker following the AT from Caribou Pond Road. Then hike over to Redington from South Crocker on the herd path. Reports are that it’s well traveled and has been marked with tape but there are blowdowns to navigate. It’s 6.5 miles out and back for the Crockers and add another 3 miles out and back for Redington. DESCRIPTION:Happy Hour this Friday will be at JIMMY THE GREEK’S located at 215 Saco Avenue in Old Orchard. PLEASE READ ON. \nIt’s a slick and easy ride\, just a flat 20 minutes from the corner of Franklin & Marginal Way. Take the Saco exit off I-95 and get on the spur (I-195) which brings you virtually to  Jimmy’s door. Large outside patio with plenty of room inside as well. Free parking in their lot. Over a dozen beers on tap\, full bar\, and wood oven pizza. From Jimmy’s it’s a little over a mile down Temple Street to the beach in the village of Ocean Park. Free parking there too. If you’ve never been there\, Ocean Park is the antithesis of OOB – a quaint village on the water with an ice cream shop and old fashioned library. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the advent of cooler weather\, MOAC Happy Hours may now be located at establishments offering limited or no options for outdoor seating.  For each Happy Hour venue\, we will try to give as much information as practical about available seating options.\n\nParticipation in Happy Hour events\, regardless of seating options\, is a personal decision and MOAC assumes no liability for potential health risks associated with attending these activities.\n\nVaccination against COVID-19 (including approved booster shots) is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED\, but not required for participation in Happy Hour events.   Participants are expected to practice safe behaviors including social distancing\, hand washing and wearing a mask when not eating/drinking or when not seated.   Please be respectful of other people’s choices and comfort level.  Do not participate if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting COVID symptoms\, have recently tested positive for COVID or have come into close contact with someone who may be COVID positive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Details just in!…Canoe the historic section of the upper Missouri River\, 149 miles through central Montana’s Missouri Breaks as described in Steven Ambrose’s “Undaunted Courage!”  Camp at the exact same places that Lewis and Clark did – essentially unchanged!  Nez Pierce Indian and buffalo Territory.  Flying into Bozeman\, Montana Friday\, August 19th\, car/shuttle to Great Falls\, then to Fort Benton.  Renting canoes and arranged shuttle for the 149 mile trip.  High class food and all gear provided except…You provide your own tent\, sleeping bag and personal gear.  Easy canoe trip – no rapids\, no portages.  Again\, poorly qualified counselors on hand for any issues.  8 Days on the river through spectacular scenery!  Shuttle back to Great Falls August 28th and fly home.  Rough costs: Canoe share $150\, river shuttle $100\, food $100\, plus airfare depending on your situation.

DESCRIPTION:Monday Paddle Mere Point to the Goslings 8-15-2022\, 9 AM to 2 PM — Paddle starts at 9:30 AM \nWe’ll meet at the public boat launch at Mere Point in Brunswick about 9 AM and start paddling about 9:30 AM. This boat launch has bathroom facilities and an all-tide ramp. \nThe tide will be low about 8:15 AM\, so we’ll paddle out against it staying close to the shore on the inside of Upper and Lower Goose to The Goslings for a lunch or snack break. The tide will be with us on the way back on the outside of Upper and Lower Goose. Depending on the timing\, we may have a southeast wind also helping with the return to Mere Point. This trip is weather dependent — especially  changes between now and then for wind and fog. \nYou must have a sea kayak and wear a PFD. Spray skirts and wet suits are recommended. Come to my China Lake camp weekly rental that is empty on Sunday and enjoy swimming\, hanging out on or next to the water\, kayaking\, canoeing\, eating\, etc. I have 2 kayaks that can be used. I can’t kayak myself this summer but you can on this 9 mile lake. Parking is limited so please carpool and feel free to bring your own floats or non power boats. Arrive anytime after 12. I have to depart back for Portland by 6:30 with the camp cleaned up for potential renters so looking at entertaining from 12-6. Text me for assist with carpooling or meet at 11 in front of Falmouth Goodwill. We may have to park cars at the town office parking lot and shuttle if there are a lot of people. SUMMARY:Paddle Little Sebago
DESCRIPTION:Come upta camp to do a paddle in the upper and middle bays of Little Sebago Lake in Gray.  We’ll stop to swim (or just stretch our legs) by an island.  Paddle will be about an hour and a half\, give or take\, depending on the group.  PFDs and whistles required (rangers on the lake are stopping people these days).  You don’t have to wear the PFD\, just have it with you. \nFolks are welcome to stay to sit around the fire after\, have a drink and BBQ.  BYO food and drinks. \n  \nPlease RSVP (lmitchell75@aol.com) and I’ll send the address when you let me know you’re coming. Please arrive with enough time to unload so we’re on the water at 3:30.  I’ll be there by 3:00. \n  \nIf you can’t make the paddle\, you can still join us later to relax\, eat\, drink and be merry when we return (should be by 5:30).   A charcoal grill (and charcoal) will be available to use. \nI have a couple of sit-on-top kayaks\, paddle boards and a canoe to lend out if someone needs a boat – but you must let me know ahead of time.  I also have some extra PFDs and whistles (if not all the boats are loaned out).

DESCRIPTION:Join as Darrell Ferguson talks all things skydiving. Bucket list item? Curious? Darrell will answer all your questions. \nDarrell is a true adrenaline junky and has been for his entire life. Aside from a 30-year skydiver\, he is also a land and seaplane pilot\, scuba diver\, and raced motocross for years and still rides frequently. He can be found on a Harley\, mountain bike\, fat bike\, canoe\, paddleboard\, kayak\, waterski\, jet ski\, barefoot ski. If it’s fun and can be done outdoors\, he’s probably tried it. \nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 60 at the summit and warmer below. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top just in case. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8.
