DESCRIPTION:Happy Hour this week will be at “Run of the Mill” at 100 Main Street down in Saco. Easy to get to: Take I95 to the Saco/OOB Exit proceeding on to the spur (I195) which brings you to Route 1; turn right on to Route 1 and “Run of the Mill” will be on your right in about one mile. \nGreat food\, full bar\, and their own microbrewery onsite. They have a great deck which is pretty much on the Saco River (they prefer to seat folks here who will be eating something). Their bar (where we normally sit) is cozy with lots of wood. Free parking in their lot. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWith the advent of cooler weather\, MOAC Happy Hours may now be located at establishments offering limited or no options for outdoor seating.  For each Happy Hour venue\, we will try to give as much information as practical about available seating options.\n\nParticipation in Happy Hour events\, regardless of seating options\, is a personal decision and MOAC assumes no liability for potential health risks associated with attending these activities.\n\nVaccination against COVID-19 (including approved booster shots) is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED\, but not required for participation in Happy Hour events.   Participants are expected to practice safe behaviors including social distancing\, hand washing and wearing a mask when not eating/drinking or when not seated.   Please be respectful of other people’s choices and comfort level.  Do not participate if you are not feeling well\, exhibiting COVID symptoms\, have recently tested positive for COVID or have come into close contact with someone who may be COVID positive.

SUMMARY:Rail to Trail Biking in Aroostook County
DESCRIPTION:I will be in Aroostook County for work and plan to take my bike along.  There are two substantial Rail to Trail systems in the area; the Aroostook Valley Trail and the Bangor to Aroostook Trail.   They start in the Presque Isle/Caribou area.  It’s a 4 1/2 hour drive from Portland to that area (I thought it was more so that was a relief!)   Accommodations are on your own.  I have an Airbnb reserved and there’s other options for places to stay.  It’s a beautiful\, remote area to explore and I’m open to discuss options.  Call or email if you have an interest to discuss further.

DESCRIPTION:Let’s Visit Iceland!\nJoin us as Wendy Hayes takes on a journey to a beautiful country with waterfalls\, cliffs\, volcanoes\, and hot springs – it’s just an amazing place. \nShe’s made several trips to Iceland\, the last trip in June 2021.  She’ll be sharing some of her images\, knowledge\, and adventures at the September 7 meeting. If you’ve been before\, we can share our experiences.  If you’ve never been and are curious or have questions\, here’s your chance to explore the possibility.  Or maybe you just like looking at the pretty pictures. \nPlease come and share Iceland! \n\nWendy is our current club Secretary. After spending her week at work in front of a computer\, she loves spending at least one day a weekend hiking in the White Mountains\, sometimes with MOAC\, or other groups\, and sometimes solo hiking.  She also really enjoys sea kayaking.  Wendy loves nature and feels so privileged when she has the chance to wander through it.  In the past few years she’s gotten back to doing some traveling\, going to Iceland several times as well as Costa Rica and Mont Blanc\, where she had the opportunity to hike and kayak in other environments and broaden her worldview through the eyes of other cultures. \nAnd we’re back at the A2U2: Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

DESCRIPTION:It’s the last Friday before Labor Day and we’d like to interest our group in something different. Happy Hour this Friday will be at THE PIRATE’S PATIO\, 2 Walnut Street in OOB. Please READ ON. \nThe “patio” is the sand of the beach. The place is rustic but they have a full bar and pub food. There typically is a one-piece band – a vocalist on a guitar singing mellow country music. \nGETTING THERE: If you take the Old Blue Point Road off of Route 1 (just set your GPS from Terra Cotta Pasta on that corner) you’ll get all the way to the Pirate’s Patio with ZERO TRAFFIC. \nPARKING: The town’s Milliken Street Parking Lot is large and always has plenty of room. It’s at the corner of Walnut and Milliken Street and is exactly one-tenth mile from Pirate’s Patio – a two to three minute walk. SUMMARY:Paddle Quahog Bay Friday 9-2 from Bethel Point
DESCRIPTION:We’ll meet at the public boat launch (all-tide) at Bethel Point in Harpswell about 9:30 AM and start paddling about 10 AM. This boat launch has a porta-potty and an all-tide ramp. There is a $6 parking fee. \nThe tide will be low about 9:45 AM\, so we’ll paddle into Quahog Bay with the tide as it comes in\, following the shore (as close as we can get)\, exploring some coves that aren’t mud flats and stopping for a lunch or snack break on Little Snow Island (owned by the town of Harpswell). Plan on about a six-to-seven-mile paddle. \nThis trip is weather dependent\, but as of Aug 31st\, it looks like a good day with little wind. This bay is also somewhat protected. \nYou must have a sea kayak and wear a PFD. Spray skirts and wet suits are recommended. DESCRIPTION:Hike North and South Crocker following the AT from Caribou Pond Road. Then hike over to Redington from South Crocker on the herd path. Reports are that it’s well traveled and has been marked with tape but there are blowdowns to navigate. It’s 6.5 miles out and back for the Crockers and add another 3 miles out and back for Redington. DESCRIPTION:Details just in!…Canoe the historic section of the upper Missouri River\, 149 miles through central Montana’s Missouri Breaks as described in Steven Ambrose’s “Undaunted Courage!”  Camp at the exact same places that Lewis and Clark did – essentially unchanged!  Nez Pierce Indian and buffalo Territory.  Flying into Bozeman\, Montana Friday\, August 19th\, car/shuttle to Great Falls\, then to Fort Benton.  Renting canoes and arranged shuttle for the 149 mile trip.  High class food and all gear provided except…You provide your own tent\, sleeping bag and personal gear.  Easy canoe trip – no rapids\, no portages.  Again\, poorly qualified counselors on hand for any issues.  8 Days on the river through spectacular scenery!  Shuttle back to Great Falls August 28th and fly home.  Rough costs: Canoe share $150\, river shuttle $100\, food $100\, plus airfare depending on your situation.

DESCRIPTION:Monday Paddle Mere Point to the Goslings 8-15-2022\, 9 AM to 2 PM — Paddle starts at 9:30 AM \nWe’ll meet at the public boat launch at Mere Point in Brunswick about 9 AM and start paddling about 9:30 AM. This boat launch has bathroom facilities and an all-tide ramp. \nThe tide will be low about 8:15 AM\, so we’ll paddle out against it staying close to the shore on the inside of Upper and Lower Goose to The Goslings for a lunch or snack break. The tide will be with us on the way back on the outside of Upper and Lower Goose. Depending on the timing\, we may have a southeast wind also helping with the return to Mere Point. This trip is weather dependent — especially  changes between now and then for wind and fog. \nYou must have a sea kayak and wear a PFD. Spray skirts and wet suits are recommended. DESCRIPTION:Come upta camp to do a paddle in the upper and middle bays of Little Sebago Lake in Gray.  We’ll stop to swim (or just stretch our legs) by an island.  Paddle will be about an hour and a half\, give or take\, depending on the group.  PFDs and whistles required (rangers on the lake are stopping people these days).  You don’t have to wear the PFD\, just have it with you. \nFolks are welcome to stay to sit around the fire after\, have a drink and BBQ.  BYO food and drinks. \n  \nPlease RSVP (lmitchell75@aol.com) and I’ll send the address when you let me know you’re coming. Please arrive with enough time to unload so we’re on the water at 3:30.  I’ll be there by 3:00. \n  \nIf you can’t make the paddle\, you can still join us later to relax\, eat\, drink and be merry when we return (should be by 5:30).   A charcoal grill (and charcoal) will be available to use. \nI have a couple of sit-on-top kayaks\, paddle boards and a canoe to lend out if someone needs a boat – but you must let me know ahead of time.  I also have some extra PFDs and whistles (if not all the boats are loaned out).

DESCRIPTION:Join as Darrell Ferguson talks all things skydiving. Bucket list item? Curious? Darrell will answer all your questions. \nDarrell is a true adrenaline junky and has been for his entire life. Aside from a 30-year skydiver\, he is also a land and seaplane pilot\, scuba diver\, and raced motocross for years and still rides frequently. He can be found on a Harley\, mountain bike\, fat bike\, canoe\, paddleboard\, kayak\, waterski\, jet ski\, barefoot ski. If it’s fun and can be done outdoors\, he’s probably tried it. \nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 60 at the summit and warmer below. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top just in case. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. DESCRIPTION:Sandwich Dome hike via Sandwich Mountain trail – Noon Peak\, Jennings Peak\, Sandwich Dome (elevation 3993). Return Drakes Brook trail. This is about a 9-mile round trip hike and is rated challenging. Below is a pretty good link with a description (cut and paste). \nThe trail head is located near Waterville valley off Route 49\, this is a 2-1/2 hour drive from Portland. I live NW of Portland so if carpooling is an option we could meet in Cornish. \nWeather is looking nice although windy 15 to 20 NNW\, mid 50s (high 40s with wind chill). \nBe prepared\, looks like water may be available on the decent from Drakes brook. DESCRIPTION:A day in Bayville\, Boothbay Harbor \nSaturday July 23rd  \n2pm -9pm  \nAlina and Robert are inviting members\, limit of 20\, to enjoy our home in a special community of cottages at the head of Linekin Bay. \nMy guests will have access to a dock for launching kayaks\, swim\, or enjoy the view. There are numerous nearby land trust trails.  \nKitchen facilities are available to share snacks and drinks. \nWe can gather for a community supper with salmon and roasted veggies. And others can bring salads\, other goodies and drinks to enjoy on our deck. I also have a fire pit. Musicians welcome. Lucky our doggie also welcomes well behaved pooches. \nActivities to enjoy: \nKayaking Linekin Bay shoreline of around Cabbage Island \nHiking land trust trails – Lobster Cove Meadow and Appalache trail are accessible from our house.  \nSwimming  \nTennis if courts are free \nHanging out at the dock or on our deck \nParking \nDepending on numbers attending\, parking at the Meadow Mall (1mile away) and car pooling to my house where there is room for about 5 cars.

If you’re unsure what equipment & clothing you need\, you can learn that too\, so you can have a safe and enjoyable hike.   This is the fourth hike in the series. \nHere’s the plan for hikes 4 & 5: \nJuly 23 – Peaked Mountain\, North Conway.  4 mi 1200’  3 hours.  AllTrails description & map. \nAugust 20 – Pleasant Mountain\, Bridgton/Denmark\, Firewarden’s Trail.  5.0 mi\, 1500’\, 4hours.  AllTrails description & map. \nEach hike is scheduled for a Saturday.  The rain date will be the next day (Sunday).  I’ll keep track of the weather as each hike gets close.  \nBy reservation only.  Maximum of 8 people for each hike.  Contact me by email to make a reservation for each hike\, or if you want to make a reservation for all of them\, that’s fine too.  More details before each hike.

From downhill skiing to scaling the face of El Capitan\, he has gleaned firsthand the benefits of outdoor recreation for the disability community. He relishes the opportunity to speak to anyone and everyone about this important aspect of our society and to bring awareness to the need for greater access to our natural world. \nAttendees will hear stories and insights into the life of Enock\, including how his middle school phys. ed. teacher positively impacted and supported his physical activity feats\, and what outdoor recreation has meant for his mental and physical well-being. SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Washington via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and Jewell Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this long\, rugged\, difficult hike of 9.6 miles\, 3\,850′ elevation gain. This will be an all day hike\, with the potential for bad weather on top of Mt. Washington\, even though it’s not in the forecast. Winds are expected to be 25+ mph at elevation\, with a 25% chance of rain and partly cloudy conditions. Temps will range from the 40’s to 60 on the top\, with temps in the 60’s on the way up and down. Mt. Washington’s weather can change on a dime – be prepared with a rain shell\, warm jacket\, warm hat and gloves. I’ve been hailed on and had gale winds and rain on a day that was forecast to be a “heat index day” in the 90’s. Because I’ve had hikers who didn’t come prepared and needed to descend early on a big mountain hike\, I will be checking your gear before we get in the car. If you don’t have the clothing recommended\, I will ask you not to come with us – it’s just not fair to the rest of the group. Many of the fatalities on Mt. Washington have happened in July and August\, when people assumed the weather would be nice\, and they weren’t prepared. There are a lot of water crossings on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail – hiking poles are helpful but not required. The scenery is stunning all the way up with the river and waterfalls\, then of course those great Presidential views once you get above treeline. \nPlease also bring at least 2 liters of water\, lunch and lots of snacks. If you want to tag Mt. Monroe for your 4\,000 footer list\, that’s only 1/4 mile off our route so you can easily add that one. Anyone who doesn’t need it can hang out at the Lake of the Clouds Hut while we wait. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only.
