LL Bean hosts a lecture series on Friday evenings from January through April. These are events run by LL Bean. They are here on the MOAC calendar to make membership aware of them. Questions should be addressed to LL Bean. These events are held in the camping department atrium. MOACers often gather for a nightcap after.
Renowned maritime historian, Lincoln Paine, will introduce his latest book, Down East: An Illustrated History of Maritime Maine, in a lively talk that explores peoples’ millennia-long engagement with the rivers, lakes and seas of Maine. Starting with the formation of the Gulf of Maine and the modern coast 13,000 years ago, through the revitalization of its overseas commerce, and the explosive growth of the cruise ship industry in the past decade, Paine explores both well-known and long-forgotten aspects of Mainers’ profound connection to the sea.
A resident of Portland, Maine, Paine is the author of the award-winning The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World (2013) and Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia (1997), as well as more than 100 articles and lectures on maritime history.
