Join Mahoosuc Land Trust (MLT) volunteer steward Glenn Saller for a hike on the land trust’s nearly 500-acre forest preserve along the Androscoggin River straddling the borders of Gilead, Bethel, and Sunday River, Maine.
We will first hike the gentle 1.1 mile long Esker Loop Trail that follows the river’s bank for half of the loop and return to the parking lot for longer hikes into the upland forest along the Chapman Brook. The upland trail system offers junctions for a return to the parking lot trailhead along the way and the most adventurous hikers may continue up the Chapman Brook gaining approximately 700’ of elevation before descending on connecting loops. To learn more about the trails, visit Maine Trail Finder at
The McCoy-Chapman Forest lies in the center of one of the land trust’s principle focus areas along North Road on the north side of the Androscoggin River from Shelburne, NH to Bethel, Maine. MLT currently owns three preserves and islands along this corridor totaling nearly 1,600 acres and holds conservation easements on another 350 acres within the corridor. MLT expects to acquire the nearly 1,000-acre Tumbledown Dick Mountain Forest further to the west in Gilead with its next “Campaign for the Androscoggin” project.
During the upland hike, we will highlight MLT’s management practices and utilization of limited timber harvests to increase forest health and diversity while improving wildlife habitat.
Meet at the McCoy-Chapman Forest parking lot on the north side of North Road at 9 AM. Those coming from the east should enter North Road in Bethel and the parking lot is 5.3 miles to the west from Rt. 2. Those driving from the west should enter North Road from Rt 2 in Gilead and the parking lot is approximately 4.5 miles to the east. The parking lot is well marked with an MLT yardarm signpost.
This is part of the Androscoggin River Watershed Council’s Source to the Sea fundraiser.  Donations are appreciated but not required.  To register visit www.androscogginwatershed.org.
