Rich Bard spent nearly 15 years living, working, playing, and exploring in the Bold Coast region of Maine. Through his work as a state wildlife biologist and then Executive Director of Downeast Coastal Conservancy (the land trust serving that entire region), he hiked every trail, paddled nearly everywhere, and drove every back road looking for incredible places.
Rich has found that people in other regions of Maine really have no idea of the breadth of outdoor adventuring that can be done on the Bold Coast. People from outside the state tend to cluster at the most well-known places, like Acadia National Park. If they only knew that just a few miles farther up the coast from Acadia is a nearly pristine region with so much natural beauty to be explored – and you don’t have to share it with millions of people.
Rich Bard is the author of Beyond Acadia: Exploring the Bold Coast of Down East Maine, the first and only travel guide to the area of Maine roughly from Ellsworth to Eastport, and he will share some of his favorite things to do Down East along with a slide show featuring images from the book. Today, Rich is the Executive Director of Scarborough Land Trust.
