Come listen to Carolann Ouellette talk about the business of outdoor recreation in Maine. In 2017 it generated over $8.2 billion in annual consumer spending, $548M in state and local taxes and sustaining 76,000 jobs statewide, and $2.2 billion in wages & salaries. 70% of Maine residents participate in outdoor recreation activities each year which is at higher rates than both national and regional averages. Maine is the 12th state to create an Office of Outdoor Recreation. This new office at the Department of Economic & Community Development will focus on leveraging Maine’s assets and outdoor recreation heritage to grow the outdoor recreation economy and build Maine’s outdoor recreation brand as part of a coordinated effort with partners from public and private sectors.
Carolann – In September Carolann joined Maine’s Department of Economic & Community Development as the Director of the Office of Outdoor Recreation. Most recently she was the Executive Director of Maine Huts & Trails, a non-profit that operates a hut-to-hut system with 4 ecolodges and 80 miles of trails, open to the public for hiking, biking, skiing & snowshoeing. Prior to that, Carolann was Director of the Maine Office of Tourism. She is a former whitewater guide and manager for New England Outdoor Center, and worked at Sugarloaf Resort. In 2015, she was named one of “50 Mainers Boldly Leading Our State” by Maine Magazine. She is a winter and water sports enthusiast, working on her fishing and hunting skills and loves to travel.
