SUMMARY:Paddle and Social Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Come upta camp to do a paddle in the upper and middle bays of Little Sebago Lake in Gray.  If the water is warm enough (should be)\, we’ll stop to swim (or just stretch our legs) by an island.  Paddle will be about an hour and a half\, give or take\, depending on the group.  PFDs and whistles required (rangers on the lake are stopping people these days).  You don’t have to wear the PFD\, just have it with you. \nFolks are welcome to stay to sit around the fire after.   Please RSVP (text or call 207.807.2729 or lmitchell75@aol.com) and I’ll send the address when you let me know you’re coming. Please arrive with enough time to unload so we’re on the water at 3:30.  I’ll be there by 3:00. \nIf you can’t make the paddle\, you can still join us later to relax\, eat\, drink and be merry when we return (should be by 5:30).  BYO food and drinks. A charcoal grill (and charcoal) will be available to use. \nI have a couple of sit-on-top kayaks\, paddle boards and a canoe to lend out if someone needs a boat – but you must let me know ahead of time.  I also have some extra PFDs and whistles.

SUMMARY:Hike Glen Boulder Trail
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the expansive Presidential views and the unique geological feature of Glen Boulder on this 5.2 mile rugged round trip hike. We’ll hike up to Slide Peak\, which gives an elevation gain of 2\,850′. There’s the possibility of splitting into different carpool groups if anyone wants a longer hike\, to Boott Spur or Mt. Washington\, although the forecast is for 50+ mph winds at the elevation of Boott Spur or higher. Winds will be more moderate at Slide Peak (25+ mph)\, although I’ve experienced stronger winds than forecast on this hike before. Parts of the Glen Boulder trail involve steep rock scrambling up big boulders and there is some feeling of exposure so it’s not for someone with a fear of heights. \nThe high temp will be 65 at elevation\, warmer on the way up and down. Bring at least 2L of water\, snacks and lunch\, plus a windbreaker. Fully vaccinated\, experienced hikers only\, max group size is 8. RSVP by text or email (207-380-6008) for meeting times and places (we’re not leaving at 2 AM) and to arrange carpooling. \n

SUMMARY:Mt. Eisenhower hike
DESCRIPTION:Hike Mt. Eisenhower this Sunday.  It’s one of the 4\,000 footers in the Presidential Range.  It’s a moderately difficult hike at about 7 miles and 2\,800 feet elevation gain. \nWe’ll hike as a group at a moderate pace\, but the slowest hiker determines the pace.  I’m usually slower coming down than going up.  Book time is 6 hours. \nWe should carpool at least part way\, since parking at the trailhead will probably be tight on this holiday weekend.  Maximum 6 people.  Email me for more details\, including meeting time and place\, gear\, etc.

SUMMARY:Paddling and fun at the Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join me for my annual (outside of pandemics!) July 4th gathering at camp.  Come for an hour or two\, or stay for the afternoon and evening. \nWe may head out for a paddle around 4:00 depending on interest\, but anyone would be welcome to go out whenever.  Bring your boat or borrow one of mine (I have sit on tops\, paddle boards and a canoe.  Also a sail board if it’s windy enough.  Or just relax\, play a lawn game (I have ladder toss\, if someone has corn hole or another to bring\, that would be great). \nWe’ll fire up the charcoal grill around 5:30.  BYO food and drinks.  If you want to bring something to share\, that’s okay\, but some are still leery of sharing communal dishes\, so it’s more BYO than official pot luck. \nI can’t offer a big fireworks display this year – that neighbor has moved away (plus it’s a Monday…)\, but there will probably be other sporadic ones around the area. \n  \nPlease RSVP for the address and so I know who’s coming ~ 207.807.2729 or lmitchell75@aol.com

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting with Freddie Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:The challenges and pleasures of climbing with Freddie Wilkinson\, Marketing Director and Partner at Salt Pump Climbing Company\, Scarborough. \n—————– \nFrom the teahouses of Khumbu Himal to obscure glaciers of the Alaska Range\, Freddie is an alpinist known for his infectious energy and original lines of ascent. He graduated with a degree in history from Dartmouth College\, though he probably spent more time roaming the White Mountains than he did studying. After school\, he fell into the guiding/climbing lifestyle for many years\, which afforded him the opportunity to travel and climb extensively in such places as Alaska\, Patagonia\, Yosemite Valley\, India and Nepal. In 2010\, he published the narrative non-fiction book “One Mountain Thousand Summits: The Untold Story of Tragedy and True Heroism on K2.” Wilkinson is also a partner guide at Cathedral Mountain Guides\, based out of North Conway\, New Hampshire. When not writing or away on expeditions\, he enjoys amateur lamb-farming with his wife Janet and two kids\, Casey and Oscar.

DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: Spots available! I have had some cancellations. Please contact us if you would like to join!  \nPlease respond to marty@donnellpond.com. Use Downeast Camping in the subject line. I will be in touch regarding payment. \nWe have reserved 4 tenting group campsites at the Reach Knolls Campground in Brooklin\, Maine. The campground is quiet with hot showers and on the ocean. The Deer Isle archipelago is a favorite for kayakers\, but there is also plenty of hiking and other activities nearby. \nIf you plan to kayak and want to join a group\, make sure you have your own sea kayak with skirt\, pdf\, etc. Kayak group leaders will want to assess skill levels so that each group has the appropriate skill levels. We will want to keep pods of kayakers to 6 or less because parking can be limited at put ins. If you are interested in learning to kayak\, there are several outfitters nearby that can provide lessons and equipment. \nWe will have a pot luck dinner one night\, on your own/eat out one night\, and maybe a group breakfast SUNDAY morning. These are tent sites; there are RV sites around the corner\, but book now if you want an RV site. Don’t forget your chair for campfire circle. \nCost is initially $20/person. SUMMARY:Outdoor Concert – Caroline Cotter and Dan Pelletier
DESCRIPTION:Details\n1244 US RT1\, Freeport\, ME \nRte 295N to exit 24\, the yellow ranch is right across from the exit \nCaroline Cotter joins MOAC’s own Dan Pelletier for an afternoon of music under the shade trees at a private Freeport residence. \n\n\nThese two accomplished performers are staging this free outdoor concert to relax and enjoy and afternoon of great music\, good friends\, some food and some conversation.\n· This event is Bring Your Own Beverage (and cooler of course).\n· All attendees are asked to bring a snack to share.\n· Although there is no set admission\, donations for these two professional musicians from members of AAS Brunswick-Portland are encouraged. Donations can be made through Dan as the event coordinator at Venmo ( Daniel-Pelletier-3 ) or PayPal ( danpelletier@mail.com ).\nCaroline Cotter: With a captivating soprano voice and award winning songwriting\, Caroline Cotter‘s songs take listeners all over the world and into the depths of the human heart. Since her debut album\, “Dreaming as I Do”\, released and reached #5 on the Folk DJ Charts in 2015\, Caroline has performed over 800 shows in 45 states and 13 countries. Caroline will be stopping through on her way back from her mid-Coast WERU Summer Concert Series performance and is currently touring to support her second major release\, “Home on The River”. Icon Magazine writes\, “Her well-constructed songs bring to mind the early work of Mary Chapin Carpenter.” Country Standard Time writes “Today’s folk scene has a new champion\, one who encapsulates the sweetness\, serenity and sophistication that has always made the genre so affecting in such a timeless manner. In that regard\, ‘Home on the River’ is an absolutely essential record.”\nDan Pelletier is a well-respected\, Maine favorite\, witty singer/songwriter. What folks say about Dan Pelletier and his songs: “loaded with equal parts pain\, hope and humor – touch the tender\, secret corners of your soul…his piano arrangements will have you humming the tunes …[and] Pelletier’s passion will leave you breathless (Marilyn Rea Beyer\, WUMB Radio Program Director\, Boston\, MA) and “a cache of catchy tunes performed with enough emotion to convert even non-believers…shades of Billy Joel from his pre-1978 era and elements of Bruce Hornsby …” (Lisa Fairbanks\, Rhythm and News)\nDan’s awards include:\n· USA Songwriting Competition 1st Prize Lyric Division\n· Rose Garden Coffeehouse Contest Winner\n· Mid-Atlantic Song Contest 1st Prize\n· Southwest Regional Folk Alliance Main Stage Showcaser

SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Washington via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and Jewell Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this long\, rugged\, difficult hike of 9.6 miles\, 3\,850′ elevation gain. This will be an all day hike\, with the potential for bad weather on top of Mt. Washington\, even though it’s not in the forecast. Winds are expected to be 25+ mph at elevation\, with a 25% chance of rain and partly cloudy conditions. Temps will range from the 40’s to 60 on the top\, with temps in the 60’s on the way up and down. Mt. Washington’s weather can change on a dime – be prepared with a rain shell\, warm jacket\, warm hat and gloves. I’ve been hailed on and had gale winds and rain on a day that was forecast to be a “heat index day” in the 90’s. Because I’ve had hikers who didn’t come prepared and needed to descend early on a big mountain hike\, I will be checking your gear before we get in the car. If you don’t have the clothing recommended\, I will ask you not to come with us – it’s just not fair to the rest of the group. Many of the fatalities on Mt. Washington have happened in July and August\, when people assumed the weather would be nice\, and they weren’t prepared. There are a lot of water crossings on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail – hiking poles are helpful but not required. The scenery is stunning all the way up with the river and waterfalls\, then of course those great Presidential views once you get above treeline. \nPlease also bring at least 2 liters of water\, lunch and lots of snacks. If you want to tag Mt. Monroe for your 4\,000 footer list\, that’s only 1/4 mile off our route so you can easily add that one. Anyone who doesn’t need it can hang out at the Lake of the Clouds Hut while we wait. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only. Please RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times\, and to carpool (we’re not leaving at 2 AM).

SUMMARY:Outdoors for All – Virtual Presentation
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, July 20th at noon\, Maine Public Health Association (MPHA) is hosting Enock Glidden for a (virtual) presentation about Outdoors for All.   This event is sponsored by MOAC and several other organizations. \nAs a lifelong resident of Maine and a disabled adventurer\, Enock Glidden has made it his life’s mission to explore the world. He has had the opportunity to experience a wide array of physical activities. From downhill skiing to scaling the face of El Capitan\, he has gleaned firsthand the benefits of outdoor recreation for the disability community. He relishes the opportunity to speak to anyone and everyone about this important aspect of our society and to bring awareness to the need for greater access to our natural world. \nAttendees will hear stories and insights into the life of Enock\, including how his middle school phys. ed. teacher positively impacted and supported his physical activity feats\, and what outdoor recreation has meant for his mental and physical well-being. He will also be showing a short film of his ascent of El Capitan. \nTo register\, click on this link: Outdoors for All with Enoch Glidden. \n

SUMMARY:Sandwich Dome hike
DESCRIPTION:Sandwich Dome hike via Sandwich Mountain trail – Noon Peak\, Jennings Peak\, Sandwich Dome (elevation 3993). Return Drakes Brook trail. This is about a 9-mile round trip hike and is rated challenging. Below is a pretty good link with a description (cut and paste). \nThe trail head is located near Waterville valley off Route 49\, this is a 2-1/2 hour drive from Portland. I live NW of Portland so if carpooling is an option we could meet in Cornish. \nWeather is looking nice although windy 15 to 20 NNW\, mid 50s (high 40s with wind chill). \nBe prepared\, looks like water may be available on the decent from Drakes brook. I would say it will take about 5 hours to hike\, so it’s an all-day event. \nIf interested give me a call or text 207-329-2686\, can decide on a meet time and place. Non-Vaccinated welcome. \nhttp://www.nhfamilyhikes.com/printables.php?hike=Sandwich%20Dome \nThanks\, \nJohn

SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 60 at the summit and warmer below. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top just in case. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. Text (207-380-6008) or email to RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 am)\, and to carpool.

SUMMARY:Toot's Ice Cream Bike Ride-Sunday 7/31
DESCRIPTION:I am calling this the Marc Hill’s Toot’s Ice Cream bike ride as he is the one who introduced me to the yummy ice cream at Toot’s.  Meet in the parking lot behind Rivalries on Farm Gate Road in Falmouth at 10:30. \nWe will ride the back roads of Falmouth and Cumberland (Falmouth\, Winn\, Range\, Bruce Hill\, Blanchard\, Route 9\, Greeley\, Doughty Roads)\,  finally arriving at Toot’s on Walmut Hill Road in North Yarmouth.  Return trip will be more direct via the Greeley and Middle Roads. \nI am guessing on the mileage at between 22 and 25 miles. \nBring plenty of water or a snack.  Helmet is mandatory.  Pace is conversational. \n
