SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – Machu Picchu
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the Sacred Valley of Peru (Urubamba)\, where the Incas built temples to the sun and other deities. \nMachu Picchu is the most famous of the archaeological sites\, built by the Inca but there are many more. The stonework was tightly fitted together\, using no visible mortar. \nWe will visit many important sites to the Inca culture\, culminating with Machu Picchu. We will touch on modern day Peru as well\, with its rich cultural history of blended indigenous\, Spanish\, and religious customs. \n  \n\nMarty Williams lives in Ellsworth and currently is club president. If you live in Northern Maine\, the Bangor area\, or Downeast\, look for her outdoor adventures throughout the year in that part of the state. She can be reached at president@moac.org or bangor_area@moac.org. \nA member for more than 15 years\, this trip to Peru in 2016 was a MOAC trip. Just an example of where this club can take you. \n___________________________________________\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \nZOOM!! \nMOAC Event is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting. \nTopic: Feb 1 General Meeting\nTime: Feb 1\, 2023 06:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \nJoin Zoom Meeting\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/87675915489?pwd=UzdmcmJGN3dvd2dlUTlhTlVhTm5vQT09 \nMeeting ID: 876 7591 5489\nPasscode: 499491\nOne tap mobile\n+13126266799\,\,87675915489#\,\,\,\,*499491# US (Chicago)\n+16468769923\,\,87675915489#\,\,\,\,*499491# US (New York) \n  \n

SUMMARY:HIKE WOLFE'S NECK STATE PARK - FREEPORT\, MAINE
DESCRIPTION:We will be hiking trails in the woods and along the wooded Casco Bay shoreline throughout Wolfe’s Neck State Park. If approaching from the center of Freeport\, take Flying Point Road and watch for the directional signs for the park. The signs will eventually indicate a right hand turn on to Wolfe’s Neck Road.  Watch for additional signage and there will eventually be a sign indicating a left hand turn on to the State Park access road. After passing the entrance booth\, bear right into the parking lot that is directly ahead. We will meet at this parking lot and step off at 11 AM. Bring cleats\, hiking poles\, backpacks for lunches\, etc. and sufficient layered clothing as we will be in the woods much of the time but after hiking a while it may start to warm up a bit. We will be hiking two different loops and take a lunch break at the group picnic shelter between the loops. Any questions prior to the day of the hike\, mcb-12nam@outlook.com or 207-844-8142 (this is a land line). The morning of the hike 802-770-9106. \n  \n

SUMMARY:XC Ski at Five Fields Farm
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hit the beautiful ski trails at Five Fields Farm in Bridgton. There are trails for every level of skier (both classic and skate)\, so if we have different abilities within the group we may split up. I like the expert trails which involve hills but there are plenty of trails that are more flat. Tickets are $16 per person and rental packages are also $16 – CASH ONLY. Please be geared up with your ticket and ready to hit the trail by 10 AM – arrive early if you need to rent. Temps will be moderate but it may be windy\, so be prepared with different layers. Bring lunch/snacks and water – we will probably ski until 1 or 2. Please RSVP so I have an idea how many are coming\, and to arrange car pooling. There’s no maximum group size on this trip since we can split into smaller groups. Fully vaccinated skiers only if you want to carpool – I will ask for a photo of your vax card if we haven’t done a trip together before.

DESCRIPTION:Since this outing was broadly successful last year\, we’re trying our hand at a sequel. \nShort version: \nIntroduction to White Mountain winter hiking. Sunday\, February 19th\, Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, Mt. Washington. Bring microspikes\, water\, snacks\, and layers. We will hike to Gem Pool\, which is an easy walk in the woods. I am not expecting to go past Gem Pool. All experience levels welcome. \nGroup limit is 10. To sign up\, and for meeting time and place\, email me: jamie.jbemit08 at gmail. Do not use the sign up button on the MOAC website. \nLong version: \nWHAT: back when I was young\, around the time of the Battle of Jutland\, we had this thing called winter. Temperatures would drop below the freezing point of water for days at a time. This white stuff called snow would fall\, as opposed to rain. Well\, those were the good old days. Now it’s 50 degrees in January. But we can still pretend. \nWinter in the White Mountains is (or was\, before New England winters started looking like Florida) a stunning experience; this hike will be geared toward folks who would like a gentle introduction to winter hiking in the Whites. We will be walking on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail\, which departs a bit below the Cog Railway. I will check road and trail conditions closer to the actual event\, but last year Base Station Road was open and well-plowed. The trail was lightly packed snow with minimal ice. The 2-mile walk to Gem Pool is gently uphill along the Ammonoosuc River. \nJust past the pool the trail goes from an easy upward slope to essentially a one-mile snow-covered staircase. Since my knees were already creaky during the Hoover Administration\, I am not planning to tackle the higher parts of the trail. THERE WILL BE NO PRESSURE TO GO PAST GEM POOL. If more experienced and ambitious members wish to continue on up the steeper sections\, bon voyage; I recommend good microspikes\, ample food and water\, and good layering of clothes. \nME: I have organized a couple of MOAC trips before. I first hiked in the White Mountains when I was 3 years old. I have organized multiple trips there with friends\, including with people who were completely new to hiking. I will move at a leisurely pace. If you want to go faster than me\, cool beans. If you want to go slower than me\, tough noogies\, you won’t go slower than me\, because I don’t leave people behind. \nYOU: this is intentionally geared toward anyone who is curious about winter in the Whites and would like an easy introduction with friends. Conversely\, if this is your 15th season summiting Washington and snowboarding back down\, it would be great to have you\, but you may find both the pace and the terrain somewhat dull.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to climb Mt Isolation because there are two bushwhacks that cut a couple of miles off this very long hike. It’s one of the most remote 4000ers (true to its name) and has absolutely stunning views from the summit. We’ll go up the Rocky Branch trail and bushwhacks\, for a total of about 12 miles and 3\,150′ elevation gain – a challenging trip for experienced winter hikers only. Microspikes and snowshoes are both required\, and you should also bring lunch\, snacks and at least 2 liters of water for a long day on the trail. It will probably take 7 – 8 hours total. Wind chills will be near zero at the top\, so also bring extra warm layers and a second set of gloves. RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM)\, and for carpool information. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please send me a pic of your vax card and let me know your winter hiking experience when you RSVP. Max group size is 8\, and we will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Cross Country Ski/Snowshoe at Oxbow Brewing in Oxford ME
DESCRIPTION:With Thursday’s storm and cool weather to follow\, conditions on Saturday should be terrific at the former Carter’s XC Center\, now owned by Oxbow Brewing.  If you’ve never been\, you’re in for a treat.  All trail fees have been waived\, but Oxbow will happily take your money in exchange for various libations – hard/soft\, hot/cold\, brick oven pizza and wood for the firepits in their outdoor beer garden. \nThis show and go event will be very low key\, as your trip leader is still figuring out how to remain upright on skis with two new knees.  We’ll divide into at least two groups\, those on snowshoes and those on skis.  More ambitious skiers may wish to break off and tackle some of the longer trails.  But let’s plan on meeting mid-outing at Oxbow’s fabulous back woods hut\, where we can warm ourselves by a fire and perhaps partake of a fortifying beverage.  Then we’ll leisurely make our way back to the beer garden and enjoy pizza and beverages\, either indoors or outside by a roaring fire. \nEvent start time is 12:00 noon\, when Oxbow first opens.  We won’t actually hit the trails until 12:15.  Parking lot is expected to already be full so you may end up parking out on Rte. 26.  Let’s congregate where the parking lot funnels into the beginning of the ski trail system.  If you arrive late\, snap a pic of the trail map and head for the back woods hut! \nOxbow Brewing – 420 Main St (Rte 26)\, Oxford\, ME – about one mile past Oxford Casino\, on your left if heading north.

SUMMARY:***Time change*** Cross Country Ski at Carter’s in Bethel
DESCRIPTION:***Meeting time updated to 11 AM because of the low temps this morning.***Let’s get out in the fluffy new snow! This is a “show and go” event. Please meet at the fire pit at 11 AM with your skis on\, your ticket and whatever supplies you like for a couple hours’ xc skiing. If you need to rent gear\, arrive 30-45 minutes early to get geared up. I plan to ski the mountain side trails across the road from the main lodge\, which are more advanced. There are stunningly beautiful beginner trails starting right from the lodge and going through the fields and along the river\, if you prefer. We’ll ski for a couple hours\, warm up and have something to eat\, then go out for more. Gotta make up for lost ski time this season! 🙂 There’s a food truck on site or you can bring your own food. We can decide if we want to stop afterwards for refreshments as a group. RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email if you have any questions or want to carpool\, or just want to let me know you’re coming. If anything comes up that prevents me from going\, I will post the update here\, and let folks know who RSVP’d. Just check the MOAC page before you head out Sunday morning if you haven’t been in touch with me.
