Experience Level

Merrymeeting Bay (Bowdoinham-Topsham-Brunswick) is one of Maine’s best freshwater paddling spots. A flotilla of dog-free canoeists and kayakers will paddle into the Bay and eat lunch on an attractive island.

The tides are ideal for Thursday, July 5: We’ll launch in downtown Bowdoinham on the Cathance River and paddle with the ebbing tide into Merrymeeting Bay. We’ll explore the Bay a bit, paddling close to a couple of islands before landing on one for lunch.

While we’re having lunch, the tide will turn. After some additional exploration of the Bay — and maybe a stop on a sandbar for swimming — we’ll return up the Cathance River with the flood tide assisting our paddle-power.

Merrymeeting Bay is one of Maine’s most unusual paddling spots. It’s a large freshwater lake, but tidal. Leader Scott Andrews has run this trip many times before, and at this time of year we’ll likely see sturgeons leaping out of the water and eagles soaring overhead.

Meet at 10 a.m. at the public boat ramp in Mailly Waterfront Park in downtown Bowdoinham. It’s near the intersection of Maine Routes 24 and 125. You can find it marked on the DeLorme Gazetteer, Map 6, Sector A-4.

Bring canoes and kayaks plus paddles, PFDs, drinking water, lunch, bug spray and sunscreen. Trip is suitable for any type of canoe or kayak (inflatables excepted). Spray skirts and wetsuits not needed — but bring them if you wish.

Pace will be easy. Total paddling distance will be between five and eight miles, most of it assisted by the tidal flow.

Trip is ideal for new or prospective MOACers. Trip has been very popular in the past. Note: The photo of the happy paddlers that’s used on the calendar page was taken on this trip a few years ago.

Trip is show-n-go. No advance reservations needed. No quota. No vetting. No mothering. No whining. NO DOGS!

Don’t be left high and dry! Leader Scott Andrews has a canoe and kayak (plus necessary accessory gear) and can accommodate two boat-less paddlers, but must make arrangements in advance. Call 773-9609 or 776-4273. Email is

Trip ends with ice cream.
