NEW DATE! RAIN DATE!

DUE TO THE DREADFUL FORECAST FOR TUESDAY, JULY 17, THIS TRIP HAS BEEN MOVED  FROM ITS ORIGINALLY POSTED DATE TO THURSDAY, JULY 19.

A small flotilla of dog-free canoeists and kayakers will paddle the famous Saco River in the Fryeburg-Brownfield area, the section renowned for its crystal clear water and sunny sandbars.

Midweek is usually very quiet even on this most popular section of the river; the beer-swilling yahoos are mostly weekenders!

We’ll paddle at a leisurely pace from Walker’s Bridge in Fryeburg to the Route 160 bridge in Brownfield, plus we’ll take two short side trips, into Pleasant Pond and Lovewell Pond. We’ll stop at several of the famous sandbars for socializing, swimming and lunch, plus we’ll stop on at a nice little white-sand beach in Lovewell Pond.

Total paddling distance will be 10-12 miles. The current will be easy, mostly flatwater with one short quickwater chute. No technical expertise is needed; this trip is suitable for relatively inexperienced paddlers and it makes an ideal first trip for new MOACers or prospective members.

It’s suitable for all types of canoes and kayaks (except inflatables). It has been a very popular trip in the past.

Bring canoes/kayaks plus paddles, PFDs, drinking water, lunch, bug spray and sunscreen.

Also please bring some junk food to share at lunch: Fritos, chips, cookies, Cheez Puffs, M&Ms and other tasty nutritional disasters. Mmmmmm good!

Meet at 9 a.m. at the Hannaford’s on Route 302 in Bridgton. (It’s about 40 miles and an hour from Portland.) From there we’ll caravan to the put in and spot cars in Brownfield.

Trip is show-n-go. Advance reservations not needed. No quotas. No vetting. No mothering No whining. NO DOGS!

Don’t be left high and dry! Leader Scott Andrews has extra boats — several boat-less paddlers can be accommodated — but arrangements must be made in advance. Leader can often help pair up paddling partners.

Call Scott Andrews at 773-9609 (home/office/machine) or 776-4273 (cellphone) or email at schussme@yahoo.com.

Trip wraps up at an ice cream shop!
