SUMMARY:Mt Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day going book speed or faster. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 70 at the summit and warmer below\, but not as hot as recent days. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only (covid is still around)\, max group size is 8. Text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 am)\, and to carpool. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me to discuss your experience and gear rather than text or email. PLEASE NOTE: I’ll be camping in the White Mountains this weekend so you must sign up for this hike by 12 noon on Friday\, July 19 because after that I won’t have cell service and will not receive your messages. If you sign up\, we will wait no longer than 15 minutes for you after the designated meeting time and then will head out\, since I won’t know if you’ve canceled or been delayed.

SUMMARY:Mt Carrigain
DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt Carrigain\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers – a rugged hike of 10.6 miles round trip and 3\,500′ elevation gain. Be prepared to cross a stream that may require taking boots off\, although recent trail reports are saying it’s rock hop-able. The weather looks great on Sunday – I’ve climbed this one twice with no views\, so I’m looking forward to finally getting what some people consider the best views in the Whites. \nBring lunch\, at least 2 liters of water – preferably 3\, and a warm hat and layers for the top in case of wind. RSVP for meeting places and times and to carpool – we’re not leaving at 2 AM. Fully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me at 207-380-6008 to discuss your experience. We may stop for refreshments after the hike.

SUMMARY:Climb Boott Spur Trail
DESCRIPTION:Climb the scenic and very challenging Boott Spur Trail to its junction with Davis Path\, 6.6 miles round trip and 3\,400′ of elevation gain. There’s a lot of rock scrambling on this hike\, and several steep sections. Be prepared for mosquitoes and showery conditions – bring your rain gear. If thunderstorms move in we may have to turn around early\, since the upper sections of this hike are completely exposed to weather\, but we’ll try to start early enough to be back in the woods by early afternoon. Bring at least 2 liters water\, lunch and a warm hat and gloves for the highest sections\, which are above 5\,000′. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please call me at 207-380-6008 to discuss your experience. Max group size is 8 – please email or text for meeting places and times\, and carpool arrangements (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We’ll probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:Rainy day pizza\, beer and games
DESCRIPTION:Another rainy weekend got you down? Join me at the Oxbow Beer Garden in Oxford where we can hang out in either one of their two post and beam pavilions. That’s right – they added another one! It may or may not be raining\, so bring your lawn games and board games to be prepared either way. I’ll have my cribbage board. Lots of fabulous wood-fired pizza and drinks available all afternoon. Please let me know if you plan to come so I can have an approximate head count (207-380-6008). No micro spikes or snow shoes required this time! 🙂

SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Kearsarge
DESCRIPTION:This will be a fast-paced hike up Mt. Kearsarge North in Intervale NH\, 6.2 miles round trip\, 2\,600′ elevation gain. Be prepared for rain showers and black flies\, although I’m hoping the showers will have passed by the time we start. While this isn’t a 4\,000 footer it hikes like one\, so if we haven’t hiked together before\, please call me at 207-380-6008 so we can talk about your experience. \nFully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. Please call\, text or email for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We probably won’t stop for refreshments after the hike this time (at least I can’t). \n

SUMMARY:Climb Mt Eisenhower
DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt. Eisenhower via Edmonds Path\, 6.6 miles round trip and 2\,750′ elevation gain. This is a rocky trail but well graded and no real rock scrambling is required. Be prepared for black flies and cool conditions\, and possibly a shower on the way down – bring an extra layer for the top section\, and be ready for some snow. Also bring at least 2 liters water and lunch. The reward is truly stunning views\, if the top isn’t in a cloud. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please let me know your experience on 4\,000 footers when you RSVP. SUMMARY:Mt Webster via Webster Cliff Trail
DESCRIPTION:Climb the scenic and challenging Webster Cliff Trail to the summit of Mt. Webster\, about 5.7 miles and 2\,850′ of elevation gain. This will be a one-way hike and we’ll spot a car at the north end in Crawford Notch. There is some rock scrambling on exposed ledges on this hike\, and it runs along the edge of a cliff so probably not good for someone with a fear of heights.. Be prepared for black flies and cool conditions – bring an extra layer for the top section\, and be ready for some snow still. Also bring at least 2 liters water and lunch. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please let me know your experience on 4\,000 footers when you RSVP. DESCRIPTION:Climb the scenic and challenging Glen Boulder Trail to its junction with Davis Path\, 5.2 miles round trip and 2\,850′ of elevation gain. Be prepared for black flies and windy conditions – bring an extra layer for the top section\, which is above 5\,000′. Also bring at least 2 liters water\, lunch and a warm hat and gloves – the high will be in the 50s on Monday and with the wind it will feel colder. There could still be some snow at the higher elevations so bring your micro spikes just in case – there was snow still on May 21. \nFully vaccinated hikers only; if we haven’t hiked together before please let me know your experience on 4\,000 footers when you RSVP. SUMMARY:Jackson XC Skiing
DESCRIPTION:With all the new snow the skiing should be outstanding this weekend. Whether classic or skate\, beginner to advanced\, there are trails for everyone at the Jackson ski touring center. I’m an intermediate classic skier so I’ll be on the more hilly trails. Depending on the size of the group\, we may break into smaller groups based on ability and ski style. Temps will be mild on Sunday with sunshine\, so it should be a great day. Tickets are $24/day. This group will meet in the morning\, ski 2-3 hours then break for lunch and go back out on the trails or end then if you prefer. RSVP for meeting places and times and carpool information (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). Max group size is 8.

SUMMARY:***Time change*** Cross Country Ski at Carter’s in Bethel
DESCRIPTION:***Meeting time updated to 11 AM because of the low temps this morning.***Let’s get out in the fluffy new snow! This is a “show and go” event. Please meet at the fire pit at 11 AM with your skis on\, your ticket and whatever supplies you like for a couple hours’ xc skiing. If you need to rent gear\, arrive 30-45 minutes early to get geared up. I plan to ski the mountain side trails across the road from the main lodge\, which are more advanced. There are stunningly beautiful beginner trails starting right from the lodge and going through the fields and along the river\, if you prefer. We’ll ski for a couple hours\, warm up and have something to eat\, then go out for more. Gotta make up for lost ski time this season! 🙂 There’s a food truck on site or you can bring your own food. We can decide if we want to stop afterwards for refreshments as a group. RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email if you have any questions or want to carpool\, or just want to let me know you’re coming. If anything comes up that prevents me from going\, I will post the update here\, and let folks know who RSVP’d. Just check the MOAC page before you head out Sunday morning if you haven’t been in touch with me.

SUMMARY:Climb Mt Isolation
DESCRIPTION:Winter is the best time to climb Mt Isolation because there are two bushwhacks that cut a couple of miles off this very long hike. It’s one of the most remote 4000ers (true to its name) and has absolutely stunning views from the summit. We’ll go up the Rocky Branch trail and bushwhacks\, for a total of about 12 miles and 3\,150′ elevation gain – a challenging trip for experienced winter hikers only. Microspikes and snowshoes are both required\, and you should also bring lunch\, snacks and at least 2 liters of water for a long day on the trail. It will probably take 7 – 8 hours total. Wind chills will be near zero at the top\, so also bring extra warm layers and a second set of gloves. RSVP for meeting places and times (we’re not leaving at 2 AM)\, and for carpool information. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please send me a pic of your vax card and let me know your winter hiking experience when you RSVP. Max group size is 8\, and we will probably stop afterwards for refreshments.

SUMMARY:XC Ski at Five Fields Farm
DESCRIPTION:Let’s hit the beautiful ski trails at Five Fields Farm in Bridgton. There are trails for every level of skier (both classic and skate)\, so if we have different abilities within the group we may split up. I like the expert trails which involve hills but there are plenty of trails that are more flat. Tickets are $16 per person and rental packages are also $16 – CASH ONLY. Please be geared up with your ticket and ready to hit the trail by 10 AM – arrive early if you need to rent. Temps will be moderate but it may be windy\, so be prepared with different layers. Bring lunch/snacks and water – we will probably ski until 1 or 2. Please RSVP so I have an idea how many are coming\, and to arrange car pooling. There’s no maximum group size on this trip since we can split into smaller groups. Fully vaccinated skiers only if you want to carpool – I will ask for a photo of your vax card if we haven’t done a trip together before.

SUMMARY:Hike Tuckermans Ravine
DESCRIPTION:Climb up to Lunch Rocks at Tuckerman’s Ravine\, about 6 miles round trip and 2700′ elevation gain. There may be skiers to watch\, although I’m guessing they’ll mostly be doing the Sherburne trail rather than the ravine. Expect winter conditions – micro spikes are required and snowshoes may be helpful. It will be windy and cold so also bring warm layers\, extra gloves\, a hot drink\, lunch\, water and snacks. RSVP by phone or text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times and carpool info (we’re not leaving at 2 AM). We’ll probably stop somewhere afterwards for refreshments. SUMMARY:Climb Carter Dome
DESCRIPTION:Climb Carter Dome by way of Mt. Hight and 19 Mile Brook Trail. This is a challenging hike in winter conditions – 10.2 miles round trip\, 3\,500′ elevation gain. Wind chills will be around zero at the summits – be prepared with plenty of extra layers\, a warm hat\, spare gloves for when your first ones are sweaty and damp\, a hot drink\, and microspikes. Snowshoes may also be a good idea\, although I assume the trail will be well packed by Sunday. This week will bring the first snow and ice to the White Mountains\, so there could be 6″ or more on the trail. Bring lunch\, snacks and water in a winter-proof container as well. Also be sure you have a headlamp in your pack\, as it may be getting dark on the way down; also\, bring something blaze orange as Sunday hiking is allowed in New Hampshire. There are fantastic views from Mt. Hight – two of the photos on this website were taken there. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only. Call\, text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times (we’re not starting at 2AM) and carpool information. I’m watching Sunday’s weather and if the chance for snow increases this may be re-scheduled for Saturday.

SUMMARY:Climb Baldface Circle Loop
DESCRIPTION:*** Changed to Saturday because of weather. *** We’ll go up the steep rock face of Baldface to South Baldface peak\, across the ridge to North Baldface and come down the Bicknell Ridge trail. It’s about 10 miles all together\, 3\,650′ elevation gain – a long and challenging hike. This isn’t for anyone with a fear of heights – there are some exposed feeling places on the bald face. Bring at least 2 liters water\, extra layers for the top including a rain jacket (highs will be in the 50s on the ridge and it’s usually windy)\, lunch and snacks. If the chance of rain increases I may reschedule this for Saturday. RSVP by text\, call or email for meeting places and times and to arrange car pooling (we’re not leaving at 2 am); max group size is 8. Fully vaccinated hikers only. If we haven’t hiked together before\, please let me know your experience climbing 4000 footers this year\, and send me a photo of your vax card when you RSVP. SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Moriah via Stony Brook Trail
DESCRIPTION:Hike the Stony Brook Trail up Mt. Moriah\, one of the NH 4\,000 footers. It’s a challenging hike of 10 miles round trip\, 3\,100′ elevation gain\, and should take most of the day. There are beautiful views from the bare ledges near the top\, and several stream crossings on the way up. I don’t expect high water so those should be easy. The weather looks great for hiking – temps around 60 at the summit and warmer below. Bring at least 2L water\, lunch and snacks\, bug spray and a wind breaker for the top just in case. We will probably stop afterwards for food and drink. \nFully vaccinated hikers only\, max group size is 8. SUMMARY:Climb Mt. Washington via Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and Jewell Trail
DESCRIPTION:Join us for this long\, rugged\, difficult hike of 9.6 miles\, 3\,850′ elevation gain. This will be an all day hike\, with the potential for bad weather on top of Mt. Washington\, even though it’s not in the forecast. Winds are expected to be 25+ mph at elevation\, with a 25% chance of rain and partly cloudy conditions. Temps will range from the 40’s to 60 on the top\, with temps in the 60’s on the way up and down. Mt. Washington’s weather can change on a dime – be prepared with a rain shell\, warm jacket\, warm hat and gloves. I’ve been hailed on and had gale winds and rain on a day that was forecast to be a “heat index day” in the 90’s. Because I’ve had hikers who didn’t come prepared and needed to descend early on a big mountain hike\, I will be checking your gear before we get in the car. If you don’t have the clothing recommended\, I will ask you not to come with us – it’s just not fair to the rest of the group. Many of the fatalities on Mt. Washington have happened in July and August\, when people assumed the weather would be nice\, and they weren’t prepared. There are a lot of water crossings on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail – hiking poles are helpful but not required. The scenery is stunning all the way up with the river and waterfalls\, then of course those great Presidential views once you get above treeline. \nPlease also bring at least 2 liters of water\, lunch and lots of snacks. If you want to tag Mt. Monroe for your 4\,000 footer list\, that’s only 1/4 mile off our route so you can easily add that one. Anyone who doesn’t need it can hang out at the Lake of the Clouds Hut while we wait. Max group size is 8; fully vaccinated hikers only. Please RSVP by text (207-380-6008) or email for meeting places and times\, and to carpool (we’re not leaving at 2 AM).

SUMMARY:Hike Glen Boulder Trail
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the expansive Presidential views and the unique geological feature of Glen Boulder on this 5.2 mile rugged round trip hike. We’ll hike up to Slide Peak\, which gives an elevation gain of 2\,850′. There’s the possibility of splitting into different carpool groups if anyone wants a longer hike\, to Boott Spur or Mt. Washington\, although the forecast is for 50+ mph winds at the elevation of Boott Spur or higher. Winds will be more moderate at Slide Peak (25+ mph)\, although I’ve experienced stronger winds than forecast on this hike before. Parts of the Glen Boulder trail involve steep rock scrambling up big boulders and there is some feeling of exposure so it’s not for someone with a fear of heights. \nThe high temp will be 65 at elevation\, warmer on the way up and down. Bring at least 2L of water\, snacks and lunch\, plus a windbreaker. Fully vaccinated\, experienced hikers only\, max group size is 8. RSVP by text or email (207-380-6008) for meeting times and places (we’re not leaving at 2 AM) and to arrange carpooling. \n

DESCRIPTION:Climb Mt. Hight and Carter Dome via the Nineteen Mile Brook and Carter Dome Trails – about 10 miles round trip\, 3\,500′ elevation gain. (Rescheduled from 5/15.) Although both peaks are over 4\,000′\, only one “counts” for the NH 48. There are spectacular views from Mt. Hight – two of the photos on this website were taken there. Be prepared for mud\, snow and ice – micro spikes are required. Also be prepared for black flies. Bring lunch\, snacks and 2 L water\, and there’s a chance of showers in the late afternoon so bring a rain shell. I hope to be off the mountain before any rain.
