The short version of this is please attend\, have fun\, volunteer if you can. \n\nNow for the details:\nVisiting with old friends\, meeting new ones\, dining at our buffet\, dressing up and dancing to a live band The Brian Curtis Johnson Band) are some of the highlights of the evening Saturday\, December 9th 5:30-11:00pm\, at the North Yarmouth Amvets (148 North Road).\n\nTicket Price $12.00 in Advance through Eventbrite (through 12/6) December General Meeting. $15.00 at the door.  Click here for Eventbrite tickets. \nDress for the occasion. Come see if you recognize anyone out of their outdoor apparel. \nWe will have a 50/50 raffle this year to benefit Adaptive Outdoor Education Center. Please bring plenty of extra cash that you don’t plan to spend at the bar. \nMOAC will provide turkey and ham. \nYOU CONTRIBUTE POTLUCK. Please bring something delicious to share (appetizer\, main dish\, side\, dessert.) \n\n\n\nEarly party! Noon-2:00pm\nTo make this happen\, we need your help with transporting supplies from the storage unit to our venue\, Dave Francis heads up that\, setting up the  \, room (tables\, chairs) in addition to decorating. We’ll need about at least 12 volunteers\, the more volunteers\, the merrier! Sing along to holiday music and enjoy a snack while we decorate.\n\nAs you arrive\, check in with Janet and Dana Thurston at the door. If you’ve paid already you will be on their list. You can pay for your dues and $15.00 tickets at the door. More volunteers are needed to help at the door and sell raffle tickets.\n\nOther positions needed are just a few on the food committee which helps direct where the pot luck items go on the tables\, plugs in crockpots\, etc.\, checks on the buffet occasionally\, empty dishes will be placed under the table. MOAC is not responsible for cleaning any dishes.\n\nPlease label your dishes and utensils. Also\, it is helpful if you write the name of your food item on a provided index card and ingredients or if it is gluten free\, vegan\, vegetarian.\nThanks to Marianne Hubert and Eileen Whynot for cooking the turkey and ham.\n\nAfter the band stops for the evening the big cleanup begins! DESCRIPTION:Presumpscot Regional Land Trust\nRepresentatives from the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust will give the featured presentation at the December membership meeting on Dec. 6. \nRachelle Curran Apse and Will Sedlack\, the outgoing and incoming executive directors\, respectively\, will overview the organization with a focus on trail and paddling options with the trust’s region west of Portland to Sebago Lake. \nRachelle has been executive director for nearly a decade and has over 25 years’ experience in environmental nonprofits as a project manager\, outdoor and environmental educator\, marketing and fundraising professional\, and facilitator. She has worked for the Portland Food Co-op\, the Environmental Health Strategy Center\, Maine Audubon\, Brooklyn Botanic Garden\, Appalachian Mountain Club and Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group. She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and an M.A. in Social Science with a focus on environment and community. \nWill has spent over a decade in the nonprofit and education fields\, working for Maine Conservation Voters and the Gorham School System prior to being hired by the trust. He has also been a legal fellow for Friends of Casco Bay\, Calendar Island Mussels and Maine Farmland Trust. DESCRIPTION:Adventuring in New Zealand\nPat Johnson Will Recount Escapades in Kiwiland\nNew Zealand lives up to the hype. The land is more magical than its movie sets: Volcanoes smolder\, fjords are pinch-yourself pretty and at beaches hot water pools bubble up from under the surf. Sublime forests\, mountains\, lakes\, fjords and beaches have made New Zealand one of the world’s best hiking destinations. \nI’ll never forget my five-week trip there in Jan/Feb 2020. We kayaked Abel Tasman NP and backpacked one of the “Great Walks\,” the four-day Routeburn Trek; immersed ourselves in Maori culture in Rotorua; hiked Mt. Cook; saw glowworms in a cave; mountain-biked in Queenstown; and hiked across the Tongariro\, a fiery landscape of craters and boiling mud. \nYet it’s not just the landscape that reels you in – it’s also the people. Tolerant\, hospitable and eco-conscious\, New Zealand is a sanctuary in a turbulent world. \nCome join us for a photo tour of this marvelous place during the monthly MOAC membership meeting on Nov. 1! \nPat Johnson has been an active MOAC member since 2002 as a regular trip leader\, former board member and past president. DESCRIPTION:We’ll be presenting the travelogue “Wild Africa”\, by Bill Yeo\, from L.L. Bean.  This is a half-hour film we showed two years ago\, when all of our meetings were only on Zoom.  We thought it was worth watching again.  According to the film’s description\, it takes “an up-close look at some of Africa’s most amazing animals\, including the first steps of a new-born Wildebeest\, tree climbing lions and the hilarious and remarkable courting dance of the saddle-billed stork”.\n\nAlso\, MOAC President Marty Williams became the cook on the recent Allagash canoe trip. DESCRIPTION:Friends of the Presumpsot River \nJoin us as we welcome a close neighbor and kindred souls as the Friends of the Presumpscot River (FOPR) visit us to share their story\, their mission\, and their dreams. \nThe Presumpscot River is a major part of our world\, providing scenic paddling\, plenty of opportunities for hiking and biking\, and more than its share of history. The river leaves Sebago Lake in Windham\, and after reaching Westbrook\, meanders around Portland and finds the sea in Falmouth. \nThe Presumpscot holds many treasures. From solitude walking its banks\, or paddling various sections\, as well as its importance in history. The towpath as part of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal\, the covered bridge in south Windham (one of only nine remaining in Maine)\, and the The Oriental Powder Company which built its plant at Gambo Falls and supplied nearly a quarter of the ammunition used by the Union Forces in the Civil War. \nFOPR formed in 1992 as a neighborhood group dedicated to defending the Presumpscot River from further industrialization\, its mission statement is to protect and improve the water quality\, indigenous fisheries\, recreational opportunities and natural character of the Presumpscot River. \n \n\n\n\nIn addition to the speaker\, the meeting is a chance to hear about recent outings\, hear about upcoming outings\, and socialize with other MOACers.  It’s also a chance for new or prospective members to ask questions.  Meeting begins at 7:00\, but come at 6:30 to socialize and meet people. \nLocation: the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link. \n\n

Most activity centers on the waterfront which is easily accessible because of the smooth\, surfaced promenade that parallels the pond for 1000 feet immediately next to the beach.  MOAC has reserved the covered shelter with picnic tables and will set up our new canopy for all to see. \nLeisurely walks are a must on the two-miles of easy trails comprised of old logging roads and railroad beds. \nCost – MOAC has reserved the Main Shelter.  A fee to the park is due from Members at the gate as follows: \nDay Use Fees for MOAC members are: $6 Adults Resident; $8 Adult Non Resident; $2 Over 65 Non Resident: Free age 65 and older Maine residents

DESCRIPTION:Preserving Vacationland \nThe history of the conservation of Maine’s parks and preserves \nThe top outdoor draw in Maine is Acadia National Park. The top-most point in Maine is in Baxter State Park.  \nMaine’s 281-mile stretch of the Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the second longest along its 2\,170 miles — and the most challenging. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway and Maine Island Trail are internationally known signature Maine experiences. \nMaine’s many outdoor experiences include kayaking through the Scarborough Marsh\, strolling through numerous nature preserves\, hiking through Wolfe Neck Woods State Park and canoeing the Saco River. \nAll of the above-mentioned activities and places have long been enjoyed by MOAC members.  \nTheir common denominator is that they take place on lands and waters that have been preserved for aesthetic and recreational values by many different programs and campaigns: federal\, state and local plus many private initiatives and collaborative efforts. \nThe story behind the conservation of these iconic natural and historic properties is the subject of Preserving Vacationland\, a fascinating PowerPoint show that details the preservation of many of Maine’s wild and scenic wonders\, beginning with the aspirations of Henry David Thoreau in 1853 and continuing to the creation of Katahdin Woods and Waters and other present-day happenings. \nIt has been presented at several historical societies\, conservation organizations and the University of Southern Maine. \nAbout the presenter: Scott Andrews earned a B.A. in history from the University of Chicago\, an M.B.A. from the Chicago Booth School of Business and an M.Sc. from the London School of Economics. A longtime MOAC member and trip leader\, Scott has visited virtually every park and property to be depicted and described. A longtime lifestyle journalist\, Andrews has written about two thousand articles on outdoor recreation and tourism for local and national publications. His first book\, A Century on Skis\, won the Skade Award of the International Skiing History Association. But it’s hard to stay positive and motivated in the face of what we are seeing. Please join author Susan B Inches for a presentation on the good things happening in environmental policy\, and what you can do to be a part of it. By working together\, we can create a healthy future. This talk will show you how. \n\nSince childhood\, Susan Inches has envisioned a world that is compassionate\, inclusive\, and environmentally aware. This vision guided her through a 25-year career in public policy. As Deputy Director of the Maine State Planning Office she was an environmental lobbyist representing the Governor. Signature issues she’s worked on include fisheries\, land use planning\, smart growth\, building and energy codes\, renewable energy\, working waterfront access\, community finance\, and rural broadband.  \nSue now works as a speaker\, educator\, author and advocate with a focus on the environment and climate change. She holds a BA in Human Ecology from College of the Atlantic\, and an MBA from the University of New Hampshire. She has taught advocacy skills at Colby\, Bates and Colorado Colleges. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of the Sacred Valley of Peru (Urubamba)\, where the Incas built temples to the sun and other deities.  \nMachu Picchu is the most famous of the archaeological sites\, built by the Inca but there are many more. The stonework was tightly fitted together\, using no visible mortar. \nWe will visit many important sites to the Inca culture\, culminating with Machu Picchu. My office is casting a T Mobile commercial that is going to be shooting in Augusta\, ME in late February. We are seeking LOCAL families (who currently live in/near Augusta or the surrounding cities – Vassalboro\, Benton\, Oakland\, China\, Norridgewock\, Waterville) who are also real T Mobile customers who might want to be considered for the project. It’s going to be a fun\, one-day shoot for $1200/ person. DESCRIPTION:Join us as Gina Garey tells us about an extraordinary\, life altering experience in East Africa\, including time in Tanzania and Kenya. \nWe visited several national parks\, conservancies and refuges\, the Jane Goodall Chimpanzee Sanctuary and the the Wildlife Orphanage located adjacent to the Mt. Kenya Safari Club\, to name a few highlights of the journey. \nThe cultural exchange opportunities and wildlife viewing at a Unesco World Heritage site were unparalleled\, as we had the privilege of coming up close and personal with a wide variety of newborn species\, and of course\, the big five. \nOur wildlife guides were the “best on the ground” offering their insights and expertise as they knew exactly where and how to find the more extraordinary experiences for us all. With over 1\,000 photographs and dozens of videos\, it will be a challenge to condense such a special adventure in the bush\, but I’ll do my best! \n  \n___________________________________________\nGina has a Master’s Degree in Animal Behavior\, and operates a private practice here in Maine. She is an avid downhill and cross country skier. She is looking forward to getting back out on the slopes this winter with all you MOAC skiers\, following a number of health setbacks in recent years that are finally in the rearview mirror! SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting – Travel in Burma!
DESCRIPTION:Visit the fascinating country of Burma (Myanmar) with Jean Armstrong.\n\nJean\, a long-time MOAC member\, waited to travel independently to Burma (Myanmar) until 2011 when it was possible without going via a government restricted tour. Here\, she experienced 3 World Heritage Sites. Shimmering\, gleaming Schwedagon\, 6 acres of temples and stupas in Yangon was spectacular as was the vibrant tea house street culture.\n\nShe visited Inle Lake\, a trekking area with many colorful ethnic minority groups\, packs of dogs and frequent brownouts. Inle lake has stilt villages built in the middle of the lake\, and active farming and fishing done on the lake berms. She was able to bicycle and wander into countless payas and stupas in search of frescos in Old Bagan\, where there are 6000 temples built between the 11th and 13th century. Armstrong spent time in the city of Mandalay which has gravel streets and 1 trishaw\, or motorcycle taxi for every 3 people there.\n\nShe took trucks to U Bein Bridge\, the tallest Teak pedestrian bridge spanning 3/4 of a mile and Sagaing\, where 600 white temples are set in the mountains along a river with hilly enclosed staircases running from 1 temple to another. The highlight of her trip was being the only Westerner in a military town and finding an ex Shan State videographer for a guide. They rode into Shan State on degraded roads on his motorcycle and stayed in Palaung village homes. DESCRIPTION:Let’s Visit Iceland!\nJoin us as Wendy Hayes takes on a journey to a beautiful country with waterfalls\, cliffs\, volcanoes\, and hot springs – it’s just an amazing place. \nShe’s made several trips to Iceland\, the last trip in June 2021.  She’ll be sharing some of her images\, knowledge\, and adventures at the September 7 meeting. If you’ve been before\, we can share our experiences.  If you’ve never been and are curious or have questions\, here’s your chance to explore the possibility.  Or maybe you just like looking at the pretty pictures. \nPlease come and share Iceland! \n\nWendy is our current club Secretary. After spending her week at work in front of a computer\, she loves spending at least one day a weekend hiking in the White Mountains\, sometimes with MOAC\, or other groups\, and sometimes solo hiking.  She also really enjoys sea kayaking.  Wendy loves nature and feels so privileged when she has the chance to wander through it.  In the past few years she’s gotten back to doing some traveling\, going to Iceland several times as well as Costa Rica and Mont Blanc\, where she had the opportunity to hike and kayak in other environments and broaden her worldview through the eyes of other cultures. \nAnd we’re back at the A2U2: Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church\, 524 Allen Avenue\, Portland (near Northgate Shopping Plaza).  Here’s a Google Map link.

SUMMARY:MOAC Monthly Meeting with Freddie Wilkinson
DESCRIPTION:The challenges and pleasures of climbing with Freddie Wilkinson\, Marketing Director and Partner at Salt Pump Climbing Company\, Scarborough. \n—————– \nFrom the teahouses of Khumbu Himal to obscure glaciers of the Alaska Range\, Freddie is an alpinist known for his infectious energy and original lines of ascent. He graduated with a degree in history from Dartmouth College\, though he probably spent more time roaming the White Mountains than he did studying. After school\, he fell into the guiding/climbing lifestyle for many years\, which afforded him the opportunity to travel and climb extensively in such places as Alaska\, Patagonia\, Yosemite Valley\, India and Nepal. In 2010\, he published the narrative non-fiction book “One Mountain Thousand Summits: The Untold Story of Tragedy and True Heroism on K2.” Wilkinson is also a partner guide at Cathedral Mountain Guides\, based out of North Conway\, New Hampshire. When not writing or away on expeditions\, he enjoys amateur lamb-farming with his wife Janet and two kids\, Casey and Oscar.

SUMMARY:May General Meeting - The Maine Island Trail Association (MITA) with Molly Geiger
DESCRIPTION:Formed in 1988 (one year older than MOAC)\, the idea of a coastal water trail in Maine was born in the late 1970s following a land survey conducted by the State of Maine of the uninhabited coastal islands. As part of an evaluation between the State and the non-profit Island Institute in the mid-80’s\, Dave Getchell\, Sr.\, a founder of MITA\, explored the length of the coast and identified some 40 public islands suitable for recreational use. These public properties eventually formed the nucleus of the original Maine Island Trail. \nToday\, the trail itself has steadily grown to encompass the entire coast of Maine – from New Hampshire to Canada – and to include well over 200 islands and mainland sites. But it is not that simple. \nJoin us as Molly Geiger\, MITA Membership Manager\, give an overview of MITA’s history\, stewardship work\, and mission of providing access to Maine’s spectacular islands. You’ll learn more about how you can get involved in the MITA community\, whether through volunteer work\, events\, or by becoming a member. \n——————— \nMolly joined the MITA staff in fall 2019. A native Mainer\, she grew up in the Midcoast region\, exploring the islands and coastline from a young age. She received her BA in Anthropology from Bard College\, and has worked in the conservation and education fields since 2006\, including a several year stint at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago. Molly got her first kayak as a teenager and has been an enthusiastic boater ever since. Most recently she is enjoying learning the challenges and joys of stand up paddle boarding on the Maine coast. \nJoin us on Zoom HERE.
